Why don't you go to your local library and pick up a book on NYC? Fodor's guide is quite good. It may help you.

buy a Rough Guide to NY or a TimeOut guide and you should find plenty

You'd seriously need to have no pulse to be unable to find something interesting to do or see in New York. A week in a city sounds like a long time, but unlike most places you'll find enough to occupy you.

see as much as you can on foot - especially around the Village area. Although i'd imagine the weather in January wont be too pleasant!

Where are you coming from?

my wife's yelling stuff out to me now...(we're from Brooklyn)

South Street Seaport
Ray's Famous Pizza (or pizza just about anywhere!)
Eat an Ices Queen "Italian Ice"
Visit a Jewish Deli/pastrami or corned beef sandwich
Jewish Bagels

Making me homesick!!! :-)

I'm a Londoner, went to NYC to see the three NY shows (MSG, Giants, Albany) - LOVE NYC, had a great time, met great people,, don't knock it, get stuck into it and you'll have a blast, I'll raise a glass to the Big Apple !

Just my opinion, feel free to disagree.

open-g - Virginia, a great place as well, but NY will always hold a special place in my heart (childhood and young adulthood memories, and it's also an incredible city)

mr_c_ox - Ray's Famous is often voted NY's best pizza, but believe me, there's plenty of great pizza places (and a few are quite bad)

there are about 8,000 variations of Rays "famous" pizza or rays "original" pizza and some called rays "famous original" pizza, but as a lifelong true native new yorker, if you are truly seeking THE original Rays pizza, that pizzeria is on 6th Ave. and 11th street, on the outskirts of the village.

if you are looking to grab a drink, i have always preferred the east village to other neighborhoods. you can still get a decent priced beer and at the same time avpid the uptown yuppie BPs that youwil get everywhere else (though they have started to invade the east village too

Ray's - overrated, even the one on 11th.

Please don't think of "Ground Zero" as a tourist attraction.

as for the Rays comment, i agree there is so much good pizza in NYC there is no need to seek out Rays, but in repsonse to an earlier post, i just wanted to give out some correct info on the subject.

my personal favorite it Pete's A PLace on E 14th street

I suggested Ray's because of its fame...I've never eaten there. Brooklyn pizza is usuallu better than Manahatta anyway..I know, I delivered throughout the 5 boroughs for several years.

As for Ground Zero...you WILL be a tourist in NYC...and it is clearly a site that one should pay their respects to. Having visited there many times in my 28 years as a native New Yorker, it is impossible not to feel the awful loss and sorrow upon viewing the site.

Go to the Soup Kitchen (Seinfeld) and try to have your picture taken with the proprietor after you order soup, but before you pick it up!!!

Just got back from my vacation in NYC.
If you're a Dylan fan, there's plenty of historic sites to see.
Go to Walkin' New York page on the www.new-pony site for info.
I got to most of them this visit.
I took the Madison Square Garden tour this time and thought it was great.
If you want your pizza thin, thin, thin, go to Cafe Fiorello on Broadway
across from Lincoln Center. So thin that it's transparent, but really good.
My wife and I go there every time we're in the city.
The address for Mick's apartment mentioned in Chet Flippo's book is bogus, BTW.
Also, were any of you UK guys in Bleeker Bob's last week buying a Stones
press clippings box? If you were, that was me behind you in line.

the best pizza in town: John's Pizzeria !
And don't forget to see Les Paul at the iridium jazz club where he plays every monday. right across the street of Iridium you'll find Ed Sullivan Theatre, not only a classic rock'n'roll venue - but chances are great to get tickets to the David Letterman show. Tons of things to do!
