You live your life like it's a coma
Won't you tell me why we'd wanna?
With all the reasons you give, it's
It's kinda hard to believe
But who am I to tell you that I've seen
Any reason why you should stay?
Maybe we'd be better off without you, anyway
You got a one way ticket, on your last chance ride
Got a one way ticket to your suicide
Got a one way ticket, and there's no way out alive
An' all this crass communication that has left you in the cold
Isn't much for consolation when you feel so weak and old
But if home is where the heart is, then there's stories to be told
No, you don't need a doctor, no one else can heal your soul
Got your mind in submission, got your life on the line
But nobody pulled the trigger, they just stepped aside
They be down by the water
While you watch 'em waving goodbye
They be calling in the morning, they be hanging on the phone
They be waiting for an answer, but you know nobody's home
When the bell's stopped ringing
It was nobody's fault, but your own
There were always ample warnings
There were always subtle signs
And you would have seen it coming
But we gave you too much time
And when you said that no one's listening
Why'd your best friend drop a dime?
Sometimes, we get so tired of waiting for a way to spend our time
An' it's so easy to be social
It's so easy to be cool
Yeah, it's easy to be hungry, when you ain't got shit to lose
And I wish that I could help you with what you hope to find
But I'm still out here, waiting
Watching reruns of my life
When you reach the point of breaking
Know it's gonna take some time
To heal the broken memories
That another man would need just to survive

Going Down To Sing In Texas Lyrics By Iris DeMent

I’m going down to sing in Texas
Where anybody can carry a gun
But we will all be so much safer there
The biggest lie under the sun
Go ahead and shoot me if it floats your little boat
But I’ll live by my conscience even if that’s all she wrote
I’m going down to sing in Texas
Where anybody can carry a gun

It’s been way too long comin’
But I want to thank the chicks
They found out what it’s like to be a woman
And defy the establishment
Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson any gun in a cowboy hat
Would have walked away unscathed
Takin’ a stand like that
Well it’s been way too long coming
But I want to thank the chicks

I’m so glad Jesus drove those moneychangers out of the church
He did not mince his words for fear that their feelings might get hurt
He spoke truth to power
He stood up for the poor
The church today wouldn’t even let him through the door
I’m so glad Jesus drove those moneychangers out of the church

I know a couple of Muslims and they seem like pretty decent folks to me
I’d take anyone of them over that evangelist
I’m watchin’ on T.V.
You wanna ban something?
I gotta plan
Let’s ban hate from every corner of our land
Well I know a couple of Muslims and they seem like pretty decent folks to me

What’s the deal with all these war criminals who get to walk around free
Like that president who lied about WMD
Hundreds of thousands of people are lying in their graves
Celebrities are calling him
The sweet new friend they made
What’s the deal with all these war criminals out walkin’ around free

I just wanna say Thank You to those brave women in the squad
Everyday their lives are jeopardized by that hate monger and his mob
But, when you care about something that’s bigger than you
Even the fires of hell ain’t too much to go walking through
And I just wanna say Thank You to those brave women in the squad

Ain’t we all just a little bit tired of greedy people gettin’ a free pass
Hording obscene amounts of wealth riding on everybody else’s back
Hey Mr Bezos! I’m talking to you!
That flimsy veil you’re wearing is so easy to see through
aren’t we all just a little bit tired of greedy people gettin’ a free pass

We ought not be condoning, bulldozing Palestinian homes
It’s an open-air prison there, A U.S. sanctioned, dead zone
I have a wealth of compassion for Jewish people and their plight
But I’ve not forgotten two wrongs don’t make a right
And we ought not be condoning, bulldozing Palestinian homes

How many more people of color we are gonna let be gunned down by police
Hiw many more perpetrators are we gonna sit back and watch walk free
You took a knee to stand uo for your rights
I just want you to know that I’m right there by your side
How many more people of color we are gonna let be gunned down by police

I’m so proud of all these young people for taking it to the streets
You gotta have conviction if you are going to give your conscience feet
That thug up in the Whitehouse will turn up his snotty nose
But these kids are smart, they know the emperor got no clothes
I’m so proud of these young people for taking it to the streets

I know I’m just a pilgrim, I’m only passing through
It’s a choice I’m making tryin’ to be true
I don’t know if there’s a judgment day or a master plan
But I wanna be ready if before the lord I stand
And I know I’m just a pilgrim, only passing through

I’m going down to sing in Texas where anybody can carry a gun
But we will all be so much safer there
The biggest lie under the sun
Go ahead and shoot me if it floats your little boat
But I’ll live by my conscience even if that’s all she wrote
I’m going down to sing in Texas where anybody can carry a gun
I’m going down to sing in Arkansas where anybody can carry a gun
I’m going up to sing in Michigan where anybody can carry a gun
My momma told me: you can run to the rocks and try to hide your face but those rocks will cry out “there ain’t no hiding place”
So I’ll go on down and sing in Texas where anybody can carry a gun

tumbled
I saw her from the corner when she turned and doubled back
And started walkin' toward a coffee colored Cadillac
I was pushin' through the crowd tryna get to where she's at
And I was campaign shouting like a southern diplomat

Nadine, honey is that you?
everytime I see you your up to something new

Chuck Berry wrote some of the best lyrics ever. Nadine entirely is great.
Another great one is Little Queenie:
Tell me who's that girl standing over by the record machine
looking like a model on a cover of a magazine
she's so cute, she's not a minute over 17
Meanwhile.... I was thinking...

Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen are both always worth listening to the lyrics. They're full of one liners. This one, for instance, from Waiting for the Miracle:
Baby, let's get married
We've been alone too long
Let's be alone together
Let's see if we're that strong
Yeah let's do something crazy,
Something absolutely wrong
While we're waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come

From Tom Waits, "Step Right Up" is in its entirety a blast, you should just listen to the entire lyrics, although the "it gives you an erection that wins the election" is a line that inmediately comes to mind.

From the Stones, I always likes this part from Tie You Up (The Pain Of Love):
The old maid is roughing up
Applying final touches
Though she's late for the dance
I tell you tonight she's really gonna have a ball
She's gonna really tie me up

I'm a tip-top daddy and I'm gonna have my way
Keep away from the corners is what I got to say
With a-one hand only, get a-ready for a ride
Give me one hand loose and I'll be satisfied

Give me a free hand baby, 'cause I wanna rock
Turn me loose and maybe I will blow my top
Give me a free hand woman, let it swing by my side
Just give me one hand loose and I'll be satisfied

Sex Pistols - Bodies

She was a girl from Birmingham
She just had an abortion
She was case of insanity
Her name was Pauline she lived in a tree
She was a no-one who killed her baby
She sent her letter from the country
She was an animal
She was a bloody disgrace
Body I'm not an animal
Body I'm not an animal
Dragged on a table in factory
Illegitimate place to be
In a packet in a lavatory
Die little baby screaming
Body screaming @#$%& bloody mess
Not an animal
It's an abortion
Body I'm not an animal
Mummy, I'm not an abortion
Throbbing squirm
Gurgling bloody mess
I'm not a discharge
I'm not a loss in protein
I'm not a throbbing squirm
Fu?$ this and fu%$ that
[email protected] it all and fu%$ the fu&#@ brat
She don't want a baby that looks like that
I don't want a baby that looks like that
Body I'm not an animal
Body an abortion
Body I'm not an animal
Body I'm not an animal
An animal
I'm not an animal
An animal
Mummy
I'm not an animal
I'm not an animal
Mummy! UGH

Sam Cooke - Wonderful World

Don't know much about history/Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book/Don't know much about the French I took
But I do know that I love you/And I know that if you loved me too
What a wonderful world this would be.

"Sam Cooke is somebody other singers have to measure themselves against,
and most of them go back to pumping gas" - Keith Richards

Hendrix - Castles Made of Sand

There was a young girl, whose heart was a frown
'Cause she was crippled for life/She couldn't speak a sound
And she wished and prayed she could stop living/So she decided to die
She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore
And to her legs she smiled "you won't hurt me no more"
But then a sight she'd never seen made her jump and say
"Look a golden winged ship is passing my way"

and it really didn't have to stop, it just kept on going

...and so castles made of sand, slip into the sea, eventually.

and as referenced by Maxtil, here's another genius lyric from Chuck Berry - Johnny B Goode

He used to carry his guitar in a gunny* sack
Go sit beneath the trees by the railroad track
Oh the engineers would see him sitting in the shade
Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made
People passing by they would stop and say
Oh my, that little country boy could play

* Gunny sack - 50 kg (100 lb.) burlap sack traditionally used for hauling grain and potatoes, also latterly used in the children's game of sack racing - wiki

The referenced town is Omemee, where his family moved from Toronto (artistic licence... Omemee is not particularly North...). Did you ever see the movie Neil Young Journeys, where he returns there with brother Bob, then they each drive a couple of old cars to Toronto for a concert at Massey Hall? Worth watching!

Wow, I never knew that. Artistic licence indeed - Neil was closer to Florida than Northern Ontario, practically speaking. IMO, you’re a southerner if you don’t live north of the Wawa goose.

But sticking with Canuck lyricists, the second verse of ‘Suzanne’ usually gives me goosebumps.

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower

And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said: “All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them”

But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

Agree with you Swayed, Leonard’s lyrics are an abundance of riches and Suzanne is a diamond. But you’ve rather traumatized me with this post - the only time I was ever on a flight that had to abort a landing was coming into Wawa from Hornepayne...bad storm, broke through the clouds about 10 feet over the runway and immediately went into the steepest climb I’ve ever experienced. (And, good grief, how do you know Wawa?) grinning smiley

In the middle of this lockdown, I’m pining for London, and this always brings the city back to me - The Kinks, Waterloo Sunset:

As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset
I am in paradise...
