They are just totally live and taking their their time.
The Sullivan shows were tightly arranged Great Hits bursts in abbreviated form and I guess in the radio department that was smart but when I found that Soul Train version, it blew me away how tight and original and sure of itself it was. That drummer should be famous. I mean those integrated color gender outrageous amalgamation and Sly so very much Cool with those lyrics. It's awe inspiring what they did.

As a slight aside ( my American band favorites in the 60's were hitmaker radio bands we've all heard about. Lovin Spoonful, The Rascals (NY/NJ bands) plus The Byrds and lots of others but in the last 20 or more years it's Chris and Rich from Black Crows. But I am super keen on real big guitar soul r&b like Stones/Faces Etc...
And to my sensitivities to these guys have super Real heart. Rich is just super.
Ray and Dave Davies meets The Faces but they have their own vision and writing talent too
