You're EXCUSING SLOPPINESS. You're rationalizing, end of story.

I can't imagine what you people would be saying if Ron was in another band that you "kinda liked" or "sorta listened to"...like, say, the Eagles for example.

I guarantee if Ronnie was in a band other than the band you people worship, you'd cringe at his playing and wonder what the @#$%& is up with him and why the band didn't shitcan him.

And no, I'm not saying the Stones should get rid of him, but when 1/4 of your core band isn't firing on all cylinders...how can you call it a real band? At $450 no less?

I was at the MSG, I agree that he's been horribly bad during the 2 first songs of the set, but then, he got way better and the show was great.
Remember that on some shows from the BtB Tour, you couldn't hear him at all, he was out of the mix.
Anyone listened to the Stade de France 98 SBD bootleg ???

I agree he isn't the greatest guitar player in the world, but he's a Rolling Stone, and he's better than a few years before, even if not at his historical best, I think we all agree on that point.

I'd agree that he's better now than he was on the Brides To Babylon tour, at least you can hear him now! As Gazza pointed out in another thread, many people applauded him during the early Licks shows for his improved playing, but by the time the Stones reached Munich in summer 2003, he was gone. I was at the opening show at the Olympiahalle and I'll never forget his attempted solo during Don't Stop. It was undoubtedly the worst piece of guitar playing I'd heard in my life. How can he mess it up? I don't know, maybe he was a little tipsy, but Ronnie makes my mind boggle sometimes, he really does.

Ronnie used to stand in for MT, when MT was too shy to go on stage playing for the Gods - if Ronnie was so bad - he wouldn't have been MT's choice....

It's rock and roll, not science. I went to a show and thought it was great. The sound I heard was great, loud guitars. I don't know how you folks can critique the guitar work during the show or tell if its the wrong key or note or whatever.

He sounded fine by the time they reached the UK last time - even to my cloth ears...

As a guitar player myself, I'd like to challenge some of the Ronnie haters to play any 20 Stones songs of their choosing error-free. Jump on "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" or "Tumbling Dice" sometimes. Ain't so easy is it? Hell, just remembering the chords for the whole set is daunting!

When you say Ronnies guitar work is "still terrible"... I'm assuming this is a continuing problem in your mind...

SO, that can only mean that you felt his guitar playing was "terrible" during the 40 Licks Tour...

Which can only mean you're a moron

lolololol

I think the issue is that most long time followers of the band know that Ronnie is capable of playing so much better than he has done recently and because of that view there has been a lot of frustration and disapointment regarding his seeming decline expressed here. I don't think there would be so many threads on the subject if there wasn't some truth to it. My own ears tell me that his playing has declined. Does that mean I'm a Ronnie basher or that I hate him? Of course not. I love the guy and I'm grateful for the joy his playing since the Jeff Beck days has brought me and I want him to play to the level I know that he can. God bless you Ronnie!

What is a correct solo anyway? Perhaps he deliberately plays like he does because he enjoys it? He doesn't play for the bootlegs.

What is "recently" ?? Surely that can't include Forty Licks, a very "recent" tour where Keith and Ronnie as a team never played better...

And if he's playing so bad... then that means the Rolling Stones have TERRIBLE Lead Guitar work, and that's just no consistent with the level of favorable reviews of this tour.

Recently to me means over the last 8 years or so. As to the'Licks' being the tour where Keith and Ronnie never played better together I suppose that is a matter of opinion, it's not mine however. The 1981 tour holds that distinction for me. As to the the reviews of the tour, they appear to have been very mixed as well. I've been coming to this board since 1998 and I can'tr ecall a time where there so much contention regarding a tour. Still, to each his own. Oh, and please don't call me Surely!

What is Ronnie able to you can hear - I say it once more - on the boot "It's a Gas in Paris", the complete Paris concert in '76. Fantastic rhythm guitar on e.g. "Hey Negrita", fantastic solo guitar on e.g. "Angie" or "YCAGWYW". And I love his manner to play his instrument, but thére is no doubt that there is a decline on this tour. And if you compare, you can hear the difference. And I think that he can't loose all his creativity and will improve his guitar work - I hope so at least.

Exactly Mr. Johnson! Ronnie's playing at that time was superlative! (Love your songs and playing by the way!)

Yes propbably. Wyman tired too. Most of them do except for Mick, Keith and loyal Charlie. Brian got tired of their disgusting methods. He probably thought they were a family like the Beatles or something.

Im sorry but Ronnie sounds like shit, his solos dont even go with the song. His only shining moment on the tour is his solo on All Down The Line, now that sounds great, but everything else is horrible. He needs to go back and rehearse whats on the records and then go from there.

Yes, I think so, too. In the moment Ron isn't able to create anything new, so he must go back to studio work and rehearse, rehearse, rehearse ...

The Stones have just announced that they will cancel -not postpone- but cancel the rest of their 2005 shows so that Ron Wood can practice. The tour will resume as scheduled in 2006.

Everyone happy now?

Sorry JKF, but this thread is getting uglier and Ronnie is struggling with alcohol. I'm sure he is trying his best, however some on the board want it to be 1976 or 1978 again.

Soon I will announce a place where frustrated old Stones fans will be able to check in and tell all their frustrations without bothering those of us who still can hear our heart beating. Hearing aids will be provided and there will be half price of course.

I repeat: It must be possible here to give a negative review of our band. We aren't a promoting club I think, but a forum of Stones fans.
