Which album best shows off Charlie's drumming skills?

And which track? (doesn't have to be from the same album)

My vote:

Album: Emotional Rescue, hands down
Track: Summer Romance, maybe

What's your vote?

There are his different styles.

Let It Bleed has fantastic drumming, as does Monkey Man and Sweet Virginia.

That style started with 2000 Light Years etc and continued through IORR.

The modern Charlie started in 1977. From that era...

She's So Cold
She Was Hot

Start Me Up from the 1989-90 tours is also a perfect example of that rumble thump he does.

Shattered - the last minute or so. The way he keeps building up momentum is fantastic.

As far as which album - there are too many. LET IT BLEED, STICKY FINGERS, EXILE, SOME GIRLS, ER, TY, U, even STEEL WHEELS, BRIDGES and A BIGGER BANG.

I think we need to talk about specific tracks. Charlie plays very well on Black and Blue, but no-one escapes 'Cherry Oh Baby' with any credit LOL

I just now listed to 'Sparks Will Fly' and enjoyed the drums on that actually...

Charlie Watts is an ensemble player, his drums do not stand out nor are they meant to, other than when he hits a strange instrument like that little bitty crash cymbal, and that is meant for effect. I do not think any one album or track spotlights his drumming and I appreciate his efforts in that. It is a group he supports and propels, and that's where he shines IMO.

She's So Cold. It's perfection. He's really in the zone on many other numbers on ER, too. Let Me Go, Where The Boys Go. Great! thumbs up

Get Your Ya Yas Out Charlie is on fire throughout the whole thing! Even though he starts Little Queenie on the reverse beat and turns it around right after Mick starts singing.

A single song would be Lovin Cup on Exile. Awesome drumming.

Charlie’s a fine drummer, for sure. However, his drumming is not, for me, the exciting component of a Rolling Stones recording. The total opposite to, say, The Who. Often, with this group, it’s a longing for some thunderous drumming that’ll make me want to listen: Who’s Next, for instance.

I was about to mention Loving Cup... great!
My album-vote goes to EOMS...

Some of you will block me now, but I also love Charlie's playing on Rock and a hard place.

She's So Cold is a super fun one.

I always dug the drum-line to Gimme Shelter.

I don't know about studio recordings it's mostly live I appreciate him. And I think he grew better and better live.

Studio = Sway, Get Off Off of My Cloud, Paint It Black.

Live = The whole Love You Live album. I know he had Ollie Brown on percussion as back-up, but the drums are dynamite to my ear throughout....

When I saw your subject title, before even opening the thread, this was my choice, and Summer Romance specifically. With the original LP on a good system you can hear that bass drum get very subtly louder. Maybe they just mixed it that way but either way it’s awesome. I changed speakers and I can’t hear it anymore.

This may sound like an odd choice, but I always noticed him on Voodoo Lounge.

"You'll be studying history and you'll be down the gym. And I'll be down the pub, probably playing pool and drinking."

Charlie is always perfect (go ahead, prove me wrong! grinning smiley ), but some bits that I particularly love...he gets some great kicks in during Thru And Thru, and (this is mostly noticeable live) during the middle bit of Midnight Rambler, when he and Mick get into a back-and-forth and Charlie is practically teasing the lyrics out of Mick, punctuating them...shivers me timbers! Luv luv luv Charlie!
