Two standouts from the selections mentioned, are Bob Marley's 'Live', and excellent album, and the Who's 'Live at Leeds'. Those two would go right below my first five. Duke Ellington at Newport is another great. I'm surprised no one else picked Band of Gypsys.

It was the first pick of the first post.

Band of Gypsies was Hendrix falling apart and that horrible Buddy Miles just made it worse. I saw them live once...most boring show i think i have ever seen with Hendrix involved. And when Jimi let Miles play guitar...i considered just leaving then and there.

Not my favorite Hendrix but "Machine Gun" is genius.

1. Blue Oyster Cult -- On Your Feet or on Your Knees
2. Little Feat -- Waiting for Columbus
3. Otis Redding -- Monterey Pop Festival
4. The Beach Boys -- Concert (early 70s band)
5. The Kinks -- live LP of Everybody's in Showbiz

Could flip Ya Yas with any of those.

Oh yeah! That live Monterey Otis Redding Album is killer. It’s pretty much the Stax band. Killer stuff.

Neil Finn & Friends - Seven Worlds Collide (2001)

Great guest spots from Eddie Vedder, Johnny Marr, Lisa Germano, and Phil Selway/Ed O’Brien. All tracks are great, but in particular Anytime, Take a Walk, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, and I See Red from this disc are worthwhile additions to anyone’s library.

Rolling Stones - Get your Ya-Yas
Etta James - Rocks the House
Alejandro Escovedo - More Miles than Money
J Geils - Blow Your Face Out
Almost any Fillmore set (ABB, Tom Petty, Drive By Truckers)
Todd Snider - Tales from Moondog Cafe
Link Wray - At The Paradiso
Neko Case - The Tigers Have Spoken
David Johansen - Live It Up
Johnny Cash - At Folsom
Otis Redding - Whisky a Go-Go
Mundy - Live and Confusion
Neil Young - Live Rust
Hawkwind - Space Ritual Live

I recommend the Etta set as one of the most incredible live albums ever. It starts out easy and then she hits the gas and doesn't let up until the end. Wow

Strange that nobody has mentioned "Jerry Lee Lewis live at Star Club" yet. It's not in my top 5, but it's darn good.

I can't make a "top 5" myself. That's way too few. That's like asking "you can keep 3 fingers, the rest will be chopped off - which fingers will you choose?"

So I'll make a top 5 Dylan....that, I can do

Rolling Thunder Revue 14 CD box
Live 1966 36CD box
Hard Rain
Trouble No More 8CD box
Real Live

Nope. Then again, I bet there's not many people on this board less than 18 y.o.
If there was an "IORR teen" board, you'd see Bieber and the likes listed....or; can them artist even play live?

Amazing. You were there?
Those shows are some of Hendrix greatest
Though I'm a sucker for any Hendrix show after Noel Redding left.

I wasn't at MSG or where ever that show was recorded, but I saw them at Cal Expo in Sacramento a month or two of that I believe. And also at either Winterland or another SF area place around then as well. This was after seeing the original Hendrix Experience at the Sac State Women's (could have been Men's) Gym and at a festival out here too. That was the band I really liked.

Band of Gypsies was him really struggling with new music and with the whole black identity thing. I thought it was a very sad time, at the time, and he was obviously not in his previous level of playing at all.

Maybe its just me, because I know a lot of people love that release and short-lived band. I personally thought Hendrix was one third of a good thing when the Experience was happening, and that Electric Ladyland was the most fantastic LP out there at the time (even though a lot of it wasn't strictly Experience). Anything after Voodoo Chile was a letdown for me.

The electric sets from that tour are brilliant. Got the complete set a few years ago. Manchester gig is my favourite of the lot...

He's got just too many great live albums to include them all, so he's sort of bubbling under the top lists unfortunately.

Also, with his looks he doesn't quite fit the image of a Stones fan wet dream, he's more the ugly 'n dirty Pretty Things kinda guy.

Of course Jerry Lee at the Star Club is a darn good album, but as you've said, there's just too many good ones out there that it's impossible to make a "top 5". The ones I mentioned are just additions meant as "nobody else has mentioned them". In fact, I've always been a sucker for live albums because I've always wanted to hear how artists and bands sound in a live setting compared to studio recordings. That led me pretty early into the bootleg thing... But, speaking of official releases, there were sometimes real surprises, like bands who were considered "hit singles acts" and as such pretty lightweight turned out as pretty good live acts... That's why I mentioned "Slade Alive" for example, a real surprise when a Slade fan played it to me back in the early 70's. In fact I own most of the albums mentioned in this thread, so a "top 5" - no, impossible.
Speaking of Dylan, what strikes me is that he never released a live album of recent shows after "Real Live" and the collaboration with Grateful Dead again (not counting special events like the Anniversary show or Unplugged, of course)- that's more than 30 years...
