20 favourite but underrate (i think so...) live albums.
Posted by: stickydion ()

Well, discussing about live albums we often mention some “classics”. “Get Yer…”, “ Live At Leeds” (Who), “Last Waltz” (Band) “Live In Europe” (Rory), etc, etc. Here is a catalogue of 20 live albums I really love. I think they’re underrate, a bit or completely. Some of these albums are “almost famous”, but still underrate, in my opinion (like V. Morrison’s “It’s Too Late To Stop Now” or Skynard’s “One More From The Road”)

My catalogue in alphabetical order:

ALLMAN BROTHERS - At Filmore East
BLACK OAK ARKANSAS - Rounch ’n’ Roll
BLUE OYSTER CULT - On Your Feet Or On Your Knees
ERIC CLAPTON (R. WOOD, ST. WINWOOD, P. TOWNSEND) - Rainbow Concert
CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL - Live In Europe
DR FEELGOOD - Down At The Doctors
MARIANNE FAITHFULL - Blazing Away
RORY GALLAGHER – Stage Struck
KINKS - One For The Road
LYNYRD SKYNARD - One More From The Road
MOLLY HATCHET - Double Trouble
VAN MORRISON - It’s Too Late To Stop Now
MOUNTAIN - The Road Goes Ever On
RAMONES - It’s Alive
LOU REED - Rock ’n’ Roll Animal
ROLLING STONES - Live Licks (*)
SIMPLE MINDS - In The City Of Light
GEORGE THOROGOOD - Live In ’99
JOHNNY WINTER - Captured Live
NEIL YOUNG
Weld

(*) I mean it, I mean it, I mean it!! I like LL…

Any thoughts? Other preferences? Add yours.

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison is a great live one, his San Quentin album is alright as well, but Folsom Prison is better. Also Cheap Trick at Budokon is great, third only to Leeds and GYYYO. Dylans live 66 is cool to.

Live albums are not what they used to be. It's true. Bands today rely so much on studio chicanery that live they end up sounding flat. That's why I have support the bands today who make a point to saty true to their sound in studio too. The Crowes, Lucinda Williams. Green Day had EIGHT people on stage recreating their "guitar"/"Punk" rock.
Some great Live albums:
Rock'n Roll Animal/Lou Reed Live
Kick Out The Jams
Sex Machine/Live @ Apollo - JB
Genesis Live (with Gabriel of course)
Rockin The Fillmore - Humble Pie
Slide On Live - Ron Wood
Before The Flood - Dylan & the Band
What do you want from Life? - Tubes

B.B. King at San Quentin, AC/DC's '74 Jailbreak and Nirvana's Unplugged must go in there too.

And GYYYO, LYL, Flashpoint and NS too of course.

Hey, stickydion, I believe I was the only who liked The Kinks' "One For The Road". I know it's from their arena-rock era, but for sure it has some great performances of some Kink Klassiks...

BTW, JumpingKent, AC/DC's 74 Jailbreak isn't live, is it???

Bob Seger's Live Bullet and Nine Tonight are very good.

Agree w/Leonard, Neil Young's Live Rust is also very good.

stickydion has a great list. Most have never heard Black Oak - that's so cool, especially Hot Rod.

From Splattered, All Over Manhattan:

Bob Seger's Live Bullet and Nine Tonight are very good.

Oh, yeah!!! As a 1970's son of the South (as well as Son-of-a-bitch), I really like these 8-tracks!!!!

I think exactly the opposite, San Quentin is one of the best live albums ever, Folsom Prison is not so great, live at Madison Square Garden is also better

PETER GABRIEL PLAYS LIVE is fantastic.

Oh yes winter, I see you like the 70's prog rock, the real stuff. "Perpetual Change" off Yessongs is one of my fave guitar trax ever. And I also metioned Genesis Live 73. I remember Be Bop De;luxe; saw them opening for someone in NYC at the Palladium. That guitarrist was so cool. He would play, then every once in a while step exactly in the field of feedback of his amp, hold it up amnd get this great screech going.

yeah chelseaD,that's cool that you got to see BeBop Deluxe. when i was a kid we had a local radio station that would play complete albums at midnight and one night they played Live in The Air Age all the way through. the guitar swoops and sustain/feedback you mentioned were so cool and the band would go from slamming glam to film noire to circus to swing and back, it was unlike anything that i had heard. when "Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape" came on, i had a new closet favorite guitar solo. although i have since dug up some of their studio stuff, it all sounds flat and thin compared to this gem of a live album. i would never have heard of them if not for that dj. guitarist bill nelson went on to do a bunch of experimental, textural, ambient stuff ever since. i think their last US tour was with The Damned (rat scabies and crew) circa 1978-80 maybe? that'll always be my main underrated live album.

I'll add Iron Maiden "Live After Death" to this list. Probably Rock In Rio (2001) too but I only got the DVD, not the album.
