Why isn't Mannish Boy listed as live??? I don't recall that they did it in the studio.

simple reason. Theres no need to differentiate by listing it as "live" because theres no studio version to compare it to - unlike, say, "Beast of Burden".

Tracks 1,5,6,8, 11 and 15 are the only released versions of those songs which is why there's no comment needed to explain what versions they are (that said, theres no studio version of 'Let it rock' available either, although - unlike mannish Boy - at least the live version of that song is a genuine rarity)

track 16 is a newly released recording as no live version has previously been released on audio format (only on DVD)

There's been much written about this list of songs, however I have not yet seen anything on the Virgin or Stones own website about the selections. Quite possibly there will be changes before the November release date.
If this IS the final track listing, however, I am curious about the following:

track 2-live from where?
track 3-same as found on Stripped? how can this be called a rarity? might it be
an alternate take? is the source incorrect about the "from Tokyo" bit? could it be the original acoustic version from Muscle Shoals '69?
track 4-i assume this is the b-side to "going to a go-go"
track 7-dance version? is this the same as the 12 inch? or is it the version found on the SOME GIRLS 8-track?
track 9-again, i assume this is the b-side to one of the many FLASHPOINT singles
track 12-again live from where?
track 15-the Stones did this each night at the El Mocambo in '77. Could be the unreleased version. also, could be the version they did with Muddy Waters in Chicago in 1981 at the Checkboard Lounge, seen briefly in "25x5"

Tracks 2 and 12 are probably the Stripped b-sides,track 7 is most likely the version from the Austin Powers soundtrack, there is a small chance Mannish Boy could be from the Licks Tour(I thought the title was Rarities 1971-2003 not '71-'01.),track 9 could be the Flashpoint b-side or it could be the bonus track from the Japanese No Security cd.

I would doubt it. If I remember correctly this isn't actually "The Stones" but Muddy's band with Mick & Keith & Ron sitting-in.

well..the album release is 4 weeks away. I'd personally doubt it at this stage although I cant personally see why they cant add a few more 'rarities' to fill a CD

probably the half-studio, half-live "Stripped" b-side

> track 3-same as found on Stripped?

yes

how can this be

Exactly. it isnt.

might it be
> an alternate take? is the source incorrect about

no chance for contractual reasons (the outtakes from that session were destroyed by Jagger personally anyway)

> track 4-i assume this is the b-side to "going to a

yes. from Chicago 1981

"dance mix" suggests the dr Dre thing that was on the recent Austin Powers flick

> track 9-again, i assume this is the b-side to one

yes. Or from the Japanese 'No Security' which would be more of a rarity

> track 12-again live from where?

1996 b-side

I think if it was previously unreleased theyd have highlighted it as such. I cant see it, personally.

Not a Stones' recording, so (unfortunately) I doubt it

I dont expect several previously unreleased versions as the title of the disc indicates its a "Rarities" collection

I don't usually have trouble with what the Rolling Stones release, but this seems to me to be just a strange mishmash of a live album/'Sucking in the Seventies'-type album. I thought for sure they would release ALL the b-sides from 1971-2003.
This really could have been something great. I guess since they haven't recorded much in the last 20 years, they want to hang on to the few things they have left to release until the bitter end.

I'm not sure who this peculiar, generically-entitled CD is intended for...I hope they don't print very many.

I'm at a loss as to the 'rare' criteria that applies to three tracks that are on already available albums (Mannish Boy, Wild Horses and If I Was A Dancer). Two of them were even on Sucking In the 70's which was remastered and re-released only six months ago!

I'm sure we could all compile our own list of tracks and many have already done so, but even a chipmunk could see that ditching those 3 "not rare" tracks and replacing them with more than three other songs (I reckon you could get about 17-18 songs on a 80 minute CD by doing so) it would make more sense and maintain the entire purpose of the recording

Ah, so that's the reason. Thanks a bunch for clearing it up.

(BTW: My brother's compiling "The Complete Rarities 1971 - 2005". That will be a cool one......I'll buy this too of course).

How many of these songs have Keith's lead vocal? 2? 3? Which ones?

What about Let it Rock? Have they done that one in the studio?
