The worst offenders are Keith's solo on "Happy" in AT THE MAX and the solo on "The Harder They Come."

And, while it's intentional, all the guitars on "You Gotta Move."

There is of course a difference between a badly tuned guitar and out of tune playing. A case for the latter might be the longer version of Keith's solo of Slave on the '94 remaster. When we (I wasn't the only one) heard it for the first time, our ears hurt! Nowadays, I don't even hear it anymore.

The lead, huh. I like it, actually, but it's a bit grating.

I don't have a "musician's ear" but I can't think of a song that sounds bad, at least not one that sounds bad because of tuning. There's a few that come to mind where it seems like something happened with the tape (?) though. The end of 19th Nervous Breakdown and a spot in Jumping Jack Flash come to mind, where it seems like the tape speed went wonky for a moment.

Exile is hard to listen to, for me. Some days I enjoy it, on others days the out of tune instruments really bother me.

Anybody feel the same?

No. It's a myth. There are small glimpses, like the intro on ADTL and a couple of other places. Other than those, I don't hear any disturbing out of tune instruments.

Good lord, no. Not for me anyway. Exile is perfectly imperfectly perfect.

But -about 95% of the guitars on Exile weren't recorded in the basement and are perfectly in tune. Really only the intro to All Down the Line has one bend D-note, which actually makes the intro work so well.

I don't hear any other out of tune part on Exile.

There is something going on in Casino Boogie, but I think that's due to bad playing, not badly tuned guitars. Other than that, I can't hear out of tune-guitars with the exception of the ADTL-intro.

Someone mentioned Happy. I can't hear that. The slide is slightly off a couple of times, but the guitar is perfectly tuned, imo.

Some bands are just more concerned about everything being "perfectly in tune" than others.

The Stones have never been obsessive about this, possibly due to their Blues heritage, and their attitude always appears to have been that if it sounds OK to them...the rest of us can whistle.

Tuning is in fact a funny thing...and actually quite complicated.

It's actually just about impossible to tune a guitar so that it's perfectly in tune to the ear without intonating it to be slightly out of tune.
[even with compensated nuts and Buzzy Feiten tuning]

And even piano tuners have to "stretch" the upper octaves to get a pleasing result. It's to do with the way we perceive pitch a bit differently across differing frequency ranges...and some musicians hear it differently than others.

Apart from old time tape wobbles I don't think there is a note that the Stones play that bothers me. Out of tune-wise. (Some entire songs bother me)
I would say that bit of humanity is why most people are are fans in the first place. E.g the slide on "No Expectations", "I wanna be your man", the guitars on "Brian's Blues", "grinning smileyiddley daddy". There is one Ron Wood slides on "Stripped"; I think it is "Love in Vain".

Notes in between the dots and beats off the time are what creates the tension and character in much music...especially the Blues.

Maybe shouldn't go into bootleg territory here, but Keith's guitar on Street Fighting Man on San Diego '69 is hilarious!
