Keith's Rudolph and Bob's take on Must be Santa.

[My copy of Rudolph kind of comes out every year with the Christmas trimmings and gets a lot of hammer over the festive period grinning smiley ]

I just read something on Slate where a writer spoke of a new Ryan Adams version of "Must Be Santa" as a "laid-back cover of a Bob Dylan tune."

As noted in the book Bob Dylan: All The Songs, Bob's arrangement is pretty much borrowed from the earlier version done by the Texas polka-rock band Brave Combo.

I've got two:

1) Merry Christmas Baby - Elvis Presley.

2) Christmas Oratorio - J S Bach, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner.

you can't go wrong with gardiner on bach

Agreed. Although I love Angela Hewitt's keyboard Bach.Keith Jarrett can be a bit annoying on Bach, as can Glenn Gould.

I have two Christmas Oratorio versions, one directed by Corboz, a slightly 'catholic' approach (think: traditional, splendour) and by Koopman, a somewhat 'protestant' more sober and subdued approach. As for Gould, I can never hear too much of him, but yes, he is idiosyncratic alright.

Hewitt's wonderful. You might also try Tatiana Nikolayeva. She's mainly known as the pianist who debuted several of Shostakovich's major keyboard works, but her Bach is impeccable.

I think the vast majority in North America know Slade only for Cum On Feel The Noize and Mama Weer All Crazy Now. I'll bet very few know Merry Christmas Everybody although I know it's huge in England every Christmas.

I always looked forward to seeing Darlene Love on Letterman every holiday singing Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).

Yeah really you know, so many great Christmas songs but it always comes back to this one for me. Not just the song obviously but that unmatched vocal.
