my first stones-bootleg was / were ...

Hi,

just wanted to know which your first stones-bootleg was (or were).

i bought mine ca. 1978 in berlin in a cinema ("kant-kino") out of a little lp-box,
it was the double-sided "Schoolboy blues" / Andrews blues".
i knew this bootleg from reading a Stones-book (lp-format) and now i held my first bootleg in my hands !!!

After that i bought my next, i think it were the ibc-demos, and in 1979
i bought on a flee-market my first live-double-lp, live USA 78, don't know
which concert, was a green sleeve. it was always exciting to hold a bootleg in
my hand.

A 1972 show
Bought a CD in France in 1994.
I didn't own a CD player until 1996 so it was quite cumbersome.

3 cassettes I got from a friend's friend around 1987, I was stunned ! Unlike my fried who was also a Stones fan but just didn't "get it"...I still have them somewhere too. One of them was "Place Pigalle" with "I need You", "Fiji Jim", "Misty Roads", etc...the other one was "The Stars in the Sky" and the last one had stuff from the late 60s like "Blood Red Wine" and also (as I found out later) the 1972 jams in Montreux.

The first one I actually bought was the "Atlantic City" triple CD in july 1990, closely followed by the "Dirty Work Sessions", "Lonely at the Top", that was expensive ;-)

It's funny to think that nowadays all that stuff (and basically everything) is available for free on YouTube. Discovering new stuff is not about knowing the right people and having enough money, it's about having the time and the will to investigate.

Can't recall my first Stones bootleg, but I do recall the first bootleg I ever bought around 1980 with cool cover art (*H.R. Giger's Portrait of Frederick Kuhn), and yes I still have it.
The sound quality isn't that great, and I haven't listened to it in ages, but the cover itself makes it a keeper.

I think my first was "Garden State 78". Around the same time, I remember passing up a couple different Hampton '81 boots (great covers, colored vinyl) because I already had the concert on cassette (taped off the radio)...they weren't around long and I regretted not snagging one of them.

There's No Angel Born In Hell on CD. It was 1989 and I got it in a store called El Corte Ingles in Madrid. I looked at it thinking the sound must be bad and it was pricey. But I took the chance and was shocked by how good it really was. From that point I bought almost every title I saw on TSP label. Those were great days to be a fan.

Essen 1970, called "Das Rolling Stones". To me still first love, one of their best concerts ever.

"Das Rolling Stones".

Hello,

My first boot was Satisfaction Guaranteed, the Sun Devil 1981 show, the 2 cd set from VGP.

I bought in the web, from Japan. As I did not want to gave my credit card number to the store owner I sent him the money by regular mail inside a letter.

Bye
Fernando

Reverse Blues, a double vinyl containing Bedspring Symphony (Brussels 1973) and On Tour 1978 (Passaic, NJ) in 1980. Fantastic stuff considering you could not hear the quality before buying.

My first as well.

Mine too. In our country it was sold as "Greatest Group on Earth" (Berkeley Concert). Great sound quality, considering those days.
I still remember that I had to hitchhike to Amsterdam late 1969 and bought it there in a tiny sigarette/sigare shop the day it became available.
The owner had them hidden behind a kind of curtain grinning smiley

In the mid 80s I was a new fan (since 1982).
I bought Roy Carr´s book, where he mentioned several
bootlegs/songs at the end. I had every official LP,
so I was confused what he was talking about.
What SONGS? What LIVE RECORDINGS?

Finally: In 1990 I took full risk: Through mailorder
I got hold of Brussels Affair. Midnight Rambler made
me cry. It took weeks to understand what they were
doing. ´Til today it´s THE version to my ears.

And then I bought Paris Outtakes I + II (Vigotone).
I immediately understood that they had a fantastic
studio period 1977 ff. with great songs - they held back...

To sum it up: Half of their greatness is unknown to
the public.
