Holy cow!! Great fottage. I hope the Stones finally release this concert. I heard that one of the camera men was George Lucas. There must be tons of fottage and audio in excellent quality.

Tarot cards and Altamont...

The whole "rock and roll's worst day" thing is overblown. Most people at Altamont were not affected by all the violence going on near the stage and anyway the concert was free so as the old adage goes "you get what you pay for." I'd say the tragedy at The Who concert in Cinncinati or the murder of John Lennon were worse events IMO.

thumbs up I think the same way ........I just watched the private 16 mm footage most of them had just a great day and didn't even aware what was happen in front of the stage.

the thing to remember is, maybe 10,000 people had a shitty experience that day. That leaves 290,000 who had an ok or even good day. I was one of the latter although I knew bad shit was going on. Most of it that I saw was pretty much asked for, like the cat kicking an Angels motorcycle, or the fat naked dude who had been stomping and punching people in the audience with his "dancing" right before the scenes we are all familiar with of the Angels flogging him. The whole thing was pretty much par for the time period, love and peace had taken a back seat for a while. I just felt sorry for the Stones for walking into a mess like that...their would-be hosts should have known better. For all the Stones knew they were in for a flowers and joss sticks experience...they didn't know the east bay at all, they thought it was all height Ashbury of 3 years prior.

As a teen-age Gen X'er in the '70s, reading about Altamont, I never got the 'end of the innocence thing.' Did grown people really believe that? This was 1969 -- the boomers had already gone through assassinations and war and riots. But somehow a guy getting stabbed at a concert ruined the vibe?
But from the footage I've heard, it was a great show.

Washington Post article
Bredehoft says there wasn’t room to sit between sets. So, at some point, she headed back to the Mustang with a couple of friends. Eventually, Hunter returned to the car also.

The Stones were about to go onstage, he told her. Come on back to the show.

“I felt really uncomfortable,” says Bredehoft. “I didn’t really want to go back again, but he persuaded me. I didn’t know he had a gun. But when he came to get me and take me back

How could anyone possibly have made their way out of that massive crowd... go miles back to their car... and then force their way back through the crowd to get back near the stage again?

Apologies if posted before.

After you have watched Gimme Shelter a few times you can pay attention to other things. You notice the cameramen were given a lot of free reign to focus in on things of interest. The guy in the jean jacket freaking out on stage during Under My Thumb, a soap bubble wandering through the air, etc. It's totally fascinating and brings a very human element to the presentation. The cameramen were awesome and I don't think that you get that kind of observational nuance in modern films covering big events.

The best part for me came at the 1:49 mark in the 6 minute video..David Crosby says it was a mistake for the Grateful Dead organization to hire the Hell's Angels...

So... Mick launched the bigget musical event since Woodstock but but he didn't care about "details" like security/crowd management. Indeed it was an ego trip for him.

Good thing is Mick's smart to learn from his mistakes i.e. he never let concert organization to volunteers/amateurs again.

There are complete soundboard reels of the MSG '69 shows and Altamont.

Is any of this stuff floating around?

Dick Carter doesn't realize he is about to need a lawyer big time. And all he wanted was the publicity! Boy, did he get that. We are still talking about what a disaster it was 50 years later.
