When Whip Comes Down or Respectable?

Both similar type tunes. Consensus the same say you? Mick likes playing these live probably due to high energy delivery. For first time ever "they rate the same" Interchangeable really. Oh alright, Whip gets nod by 1% edge. Anyone feel huge disparity between the 2??????? MEZ

There is no comparisons on this one Respectable is a top Stones song, wtwcd is OK.

I'd take Respectable. If they did Whip like they did it in 78, I'd dig it. Its just no the same. Now adays its Keef at 100% and Ronnie at 50%. Someone needs to give the soundguys a copy of Handsome Girls and let them mix by ear off that. Seriously.

Album version of Respectable is better than When The Whip Comes Down. But live, When The Whip Comes Down wins because it still sounds good, and respecatble sounds like crap nowadays.

I love both (especially the 10 minute Whip-outtake)

Both songs are boring shit musically.

Re: When Whip Comes Down or Respectable?

Both are among the finest rockers the stones ever made. Nowadays, Respectable works best live - Keith and especially Ronnie must play more guitar to make this song work.

Agree with DP, two of the finest Stones rockers, can't tell which one I love more (about studio versions). Live, WTWCD used to work better.

These are maybe two of the songs they play nowadays where I miss Bill most.

I consider Whip is by far the most exciting number on Some Girls.
Keith and Ronnie shine: only two chords, A and D, and a crescendo that has is absolutely out of this world. Charlie's work in the last two minutes is amazing.
Pure joy! 100% rock and roll. Unique rolling stones!

Respectable has a slighly different feel. Maybe because the main rythm guitar is Jagger's. The first impression is that it's more "straight" than Keith's tm r'n'r (this is also true for most of ABcool smiley. But if you try playing it, by the time you punch the D chord of the intro, you will love it. Again some superb guitar work by Ron and Keith. The opening on the E chord always reminds me of the same opening on the E in Led Zep's Rock and Roll.

Both songs are not easy to play live. They don't have a beautiful melody you can relay upon, nor a characteristic chord sequence, a trademark riff or a sing along chorus. I mean, even if you are on a bad night, people will always get into YCAGWYW or Start Me Up or Ruby Tuesday.

You can't afford to be on a bad night if you have to play whip and respectable. If the band lacks energy, these two numbers fall apart. Just listen to Respectable on no Security: it is so flat that it is unlistenable!

<The opening on the E chord always reminds me of the same opening on the E in Led Zep's Rock and Roll.>

Must be A?

BTW, I was surprised by the energy they put into Respectable in Stockholm Stadium 2003, especially after the lame version mentioned on "No Security".

Ok, how do you call it in English? In Italian its "apertura" (to open up).
I was referring to the E (get outta me life ...)

C

p.s.

Since we are in the English Language class, what is the hidden meaning of "plugging a hole" from the line

"And I'm filling a need, yeah, I'm plugging a hole"

It can't be THAT hole!!!!

My first thought was WTWCD, but then I realised I prefer Respectable on record and WTWCD live - but it depends what mood I'm in.

Whip wins hands down IMO. Great great song, the live '78 version is definitely in my top ten. I wouldnt compare it to Respectable, which is closer to the Berry rockers, but to Everything Is Turning To Gold, which is also just two chords and driving guitars and just as infectuous and irresistable. Minimal material (2 chords): maximum effect. Pure Stones. Amazing.

Liddas, you say it all, except you forgot those wonderful vocal harmonies near the end of the song on the album version that almost makes it end on a suave note...

TooTough, is there really a ten min. outtake version of Whip - where is it on? Or are you mistaking it woth the 10 min. EITTG?

respectable, when the whip, neighbors, its all the same chuck berry riffing
patterns and scales I get so bored with these numbers - need some Vibrato

Has Keith really matured as a guitar player since beggars and LIB after he
learned open tunings and put those songs to an electric guitar he reached his
potential as a player

I find keith playing acoustic more fresh and interesting then his electric
playing

OpenG, the Taylor or "Vibrato"-period is my fave stones period and I probably love it as much as you, but Vibrato on Whip, EITTG or Respectable would be completely beside the point. Don't dare to think of it.

Whip really has nothing to do with Berry. Only "Chuck's" arranged live version from the Licks tour makes it Berry-ish. The same goes for Neighbours on the Licks tour. On SG and TY the songs are incredible. I Don't think Taylor would have suited those songs with his playing style.

No Taylor or another player of his level would add chucky rhythm and not have
the ghosts of the weaving and add some great OCTAVES.

One of the greatest octave riffing live is done by Taylor on YCAGWYW from the
1972 1st Philly Show.

Taylor added chunky rhythm to keith's soloing on BITCH,Carol and Little Queenie
as well as Star Star.

This is absolutely true, but then again - he wouldn't have suited the punkish style on Whip and Respectable.

Everyone says that here but I find that so far from the truth. Taylor proved
he could play everything when he joined the stones. He went from playing 12 bar
blues with Mayall and played reggae, country, rock, blues, with the stones.

taylor can play anything he is a soloist and has proved that with his collaboration work all these years. He played on one song with Joan JETT and
his work was great.

Re: When Whip Comes Down or Respectable?

Of course he COULD play it, but some of the problem would be the thing you mention; "No Taylor or another player of his level would add chucky rhythm ".

You wouldn't get the same good result on SG with players like Satriani, Vai, Van Halen or Taylor - simply because they think bigger than Keith and Ronnie. Playing that simple and effective demands extreme discipline from technical players.

Yep, you're right about Taylor being a soloist (or a rhythm player on some songs). But DP is right, OpenG: neither WTWCD nor Repectable are about a rhythm guitars vs. a soloist. It's all about playing rhythm and adding some licks here, and then a little solo, and then some other licks, and them rhythm again, and then another little lead...

This is the magic of two songs which really are three chords...

The songs you mention OpenG (Whip, Resp.) are all great duals between what are basic two rhythm guitarists, one (Keith) that is angular, the other (Ron) of the nervous-eruptive type. Take away one of these and you take away the heart of the song. These are anti-solo songs.

Sure, mine is on Paris Outtakes Vol.1 (Vigotone CD 11).
It´s the take they edited down to the album length, the
lyrics are near a first take, a lot of improvising.

> Or are you mistaking it woth the 10 min.

Yes, I did, it´s 9 min. 55 seconds

And it @#$%& rocks.

It is on these "straight" A/D rockers that I think Bill Wyman is missed most. DJ has no idea how to make these tunes special. I don't like the way the sometimes do "Respectable" these days. E.g the version on No Secuity I didn't like at all. It's that weird melody that they have deiced to weave into it that I don't dig. Whip must be played as a powerhouse, otherwise it might fall a little flat. respectable works well even when just chugging along with ploinky little dry guitars. Like on SNL, one of the driest sounds ever to hear the Stones, Respectable rocked well.
But both could still use the Ron/Keith BU vox!

Thanks, TooTough, I'll hunt that down. It's another omission on VGP's Place Pigalle 4cd set which is said to be comprehensive (it has the 10 min. Everyting is Turning to Gold though).

Bruno, do you really think that's a good idea? It means they have to do 3 things at the same time: playing guitar, singing and posing, which might just be a little bit too much at their age. Then theý'll drop the hardest thing and we'll end up with just the posing and BU vocals!

Well, even I, that don't play in the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band In The World, can sing BU vox on WTWCD, Respectable and IORR while playing them.

I can do some posing in my living room with these ones, even!!!! grinning smiley
