Not to get OT within thread-

As there are so many groups to choose from - one song I heard recently form the past was Jackie Blue, which is exceptional, but to this day I cannot figure out what the song is about. Group was Ozark Mountain Devils circa late 70 or early 80s???

Is it about a good looking narcissitic Girl?

Is it a girl on speed?

Or just a lyrical song only where words blend?

Not sure but have seen them many times. They are from real close to where I live. Good fun band. And I have seen where they are out and about lately.
And no clue how many original members. Chicken Train is a fun song. And..If You Want to Get the Heaven

Come on...I'm not going to sit here and wait for the 'Best Canadian Bands' thread...only to hear you say that they're one fifth American...

We can all see by the bands listed in this Thread that America doesn't really make "good bands".

Aerosmith is cool to see live, but the studio songs kinda suck.
Grateful Dead was the greatest touring american band imo.

That's soooo not true.

There are MANY great American bands. If you made lists of the Top 10 American vs. Top 10 British bands, would the British list look more impressive? Probably, but that's only a small part of the story.

Maybe he means that the greatest "bands" are merely solo artists with backing bands they can choose to record or tour with when it suits them? Bruce springs to mind, for instance.

Or just a Dreamer-

From songmeanings.com

Song originally written by Larry Lee only..it was about a guy named Jackie Blue, Dares producer heard Larry Lee playing this on the piano in the studio as they were waiting to do some recording, the producer asked him what the song was about and Larry said a friend of his that had a drug problem, the producer said "No" it's about a girl and it's a hit song, so he sent Steve Cash and Larry Lee into another room to work out new lyrics, the ones we all know today.......

Your opening line is simply baffling (and totally untrue).

However, I'm interested to hear your definition of a "band"...b/c if a "band" can be defined as "A Frontman w/ Backing Musicians"....well:

James Brown
Prince
Santana
BB King
Hendrix
Elvis
Paul Simon
Tina Turner
Chuck Berry
Basically every blues dude/band that inspired the Stones, Clapton etc. etc. etc.

Good point...but really, what's the difference between Springsteen and E-Street and the Stones? Bruce and Mick are both the frontmen, backed by bands.

The only difference is that Bruce is the sole songwriter, while Mick AND Keith (part of the "backing band") are the songwriters.

Would there be ANY difference if BS&ESB had just simply referred to themselves as the "E Street Band" from Day One?

However, it makes Jackie Blue a confounding person kif not a song - but a song that keeps giving from a instrument or song standpoint.

Proves folks writing lyrics with no purpose at all... or they can't remember feeling relative thoughts of when partying at time when actually recording song.

Nice Post Elmo - thanks

Santana was a band in their prime, though, but were they an american or South-American band back then?

The rest of the guys you're listing up were/are great, but they're not bands.

BB King, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Bob Dylan are legendary iconic (north) American musicians but they are not bands. They put together bands to work with on records and tours and don't belong in the discussion. On the other hand, the E Street Band is a great American band without regard to Bruce's solo work. Crazy Horse is an almost great American band.

In addition to all the great and not so great bands mentioned in the thread, there are the great studio bands, Booker T & the MG's, the Muscle Shoals band, probably some legendary California studio bands and others whose names I don't know.

As for Santana - the band - they formed in San Francisco, CA.
Most if not all original members were American - including Carlos who moved to America when he was 13 yrs. old.
Without question an American band.

Thanks. Their music was very South America-inspired. I knew they formed in SA, but thought they moved in. And I remembered names like Malone, Aguabella, Rodriguez, Santana and Santana (his wife) and concluded with them being foreign. A bit hasty there, most likely smiling smiley
