Slim pickings, so no credible list worth pursuing.

MC5 put up a joyous racket. Got a few boots lately. Can't even imagine seeing them with the Stooges. I think Velvet Underground would have to be discussed, also. More modern, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were a potent bunch on a good night.

Again I have to wonder about the health of this individual who really needs professional counseling. Kiss.

Ok How many of yall heard of Junior Walker and the All -Stars?

You folks, understandably, probably never heard of these great bands - and that's ok.

confused smiley That's a pretty big name. If you're on Motown with Berry Gordy producing you and James Jamerson on bass, you're doing all right.

I still play their stuff regularly.

But ok, from the top of my head:

The Temptations
CCR
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
Velvet Underground
Aerosmith
The Black Crowes
The Jackson 5/The Jacksons
Diana Ross & The Supremes
Public Enemy
A Tribe Called Quest
Sly & The Family Stone
Beach Boys
Dixie Chicks
Pistol Annies
Fleetwood Mac (I know... but it's the Buckingham version I adore)
Living Colour
Metallica
N.W.A.
Allman Brothers Band
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Beastie Boys
Parliament/Funkadelic

Agreed. I was thinking maybe a lot of forum members are too young to remember Gordy, Walker, etc...

Miles Davis first quintet

I have not seen two of my alltime favorite bands listed:

Ween

Jane's Addixction

Mad Dogs & Englishmen ( the name may disqualify, but who is British besides Cocker?)

We also forgot Mannassas!

Snarky Puppy

I always assume we are staying in the basic Rock confines. Adding Miles into this mix makes it almost a no race.
The early quintet with Coltrane, the sextet with Cannonball, (all the Gil Evans era); little later with Tony Williams and Shorter.

Now that I am awake and thinking about it all I must add
James Brown, and I prefer the band after the walk-out, but once some guys had returned. Bootsy and Catfish, Jimmy Nolen, Jabo and Stubblefield, Odum, Fred Wesley, Griffith, Reed, St Clair Pickney, Pee wee Ellis and Maceo.

Lucinda Williams' band. Take your pick, but maybe around the double live album with Doug Pettibone as leader.
Charlie Sexton or Gurf Morlix's bands are just as great behind her.

Or if anyone has 3 minutes time, please be knocked out by Chris Thile with the Fearless Flyers. Chris does it all: Bach, Country, Funk. He is insane on the Mandolin. And that band here is hot.

They are being noted as a Canadian-American Band in most places I've seen.
Levon, I suppose. Ronnie Hawkins who was instrumental, no pun intended,
in their early formative years was an American as well; and I appreciate
the influences and cultural environments that surround bands we like.
But surely as you say very much Canadians with all the others.
It gets to be a little bit of a merger, at least in those years,
with populations in settlements North and South of the northern American borderline; where there are lot of French Canadians, for example, that
have solid generational roots in northernmost New England; I'm not sure
about more Western and Central Canada though; it might be more of a serarate
deal in those areas.

This thread went where I knew it would. Now people are just listing any America band they can think of when . It should have been looking for favorite three American bands.

thats a good idea; top 3 or 5.
the break it down to half decades going back, in some cases to the thirties.
that would be an ace try that could be informative and fun.

here it would be mostly the sixties and seventies i guess. but that's great too.

Threads like this always end up like that, even if you ask for a top 3 or 5.

Pot/Kettle.

Looks like you're the one who can't follow along as the thread title and OP both clearly ask to list the best American bands, not your top three or five.

some more:

Black Flag
The Minutemen
Merle Haggard & The Strangers
Buck Owens & The Buckaroos
The Neville Brothers
The Sonics
The Ventures

"Will the last American band
to get played on the radio,
Please bring the flag,
Please bring the flag."

X "I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts"

Predictable point of thread. Every American band is among the best American bands of all time. Another great thread.

I mean who could forget about the Vultures when talking about the greatest American bands.

I guess we are at the point now where we should be listing bands that play at local stores on weekends. Will find out the names of the bands in my area and make sure they are mentioned.

Not sure what you're getting at Stan. Who are the Vultures?

The Ventures took instrumental surf rock worldwide, and had a profound effect on a young Jimi Hendrix.

There is no such thing as agreeing on what the best 3 or 5 American bands are, if that's what this thread is about. My top 3 or 5 would be nowhere near anyone else's, and of that fact I'd be proud, most likely.
Yes, threads like this, I agree, do tend to wallow in the mire if I may quote my personal favourite band. And you know what, it's unimportant, just something to occupy your office time with.
