What is the coolest myth you've ever heard about the Stones?
Date: October 9, 2005 19:39

Is it the Marianne Faithfull mars bar story?
Is it Keith's blood change?
Or is it the ongoing story of "the Rolling Stones last tour"?

not that it's "cool" - or that i've heard it - but:
apparently some people claim a Swiss guitarist was standing in for Keith at some gigs in the 70s -
does anyone here know what gigs that myth is supposed to be about?

it must be all the stories of mick keith and brian living at edith grove together, its one big myth and this is a true myth. you know this book of phlip norman, the stones its described so well there especially brian was doing some crazy stuff then, and meanwhile constantly practising in the cold, stealing food etc

Best, funniest and most detailed book about the Edith Grove times (1963) must be James Phelge's "Phelge's Stones : the untold story of the Rolling Stones from Edith Grove and beyond". Nearly 400 pages early Stones à discretion. Recommended! :-)

Is it true that someone once wanted Keith to sign a guitar and he made off with it instead?

I am not sure about cool but the one event that created the most myths has to be Altamont , I have read in dozens of books over and over the same nonsense. here are the most common I have read.

1. They were playing Sympathy for the Devil when Hunter was killed, somehow I guess this conjures up some kind of evil force so some writers love to claim this, In truth anybody who has seen Gimmie Shelter can tell you it was during a 'mellow' version of Under my thumb.

2. The violence started when SFTD was played, again writers trying to project evil. The violence started with the first band (Flying Burrito Brothers) and continued through the day, even when the Stones played Carol (hardly an evil song) fighting broke out.

3. That Mick Jagger made the crowd wait until dusk before the Stones came on so that the sunset light would create a grand entrance(also read that his makeup would look better). The delay was in truth caused by first Bill Wyman being late getting to the speedway(still not sure why) second it took a huge amount of time to clear the backstage of hundreds of people so they could even make it to the stage.

4. That the Stones hired the Hell's Angels as security guards for $500 worth of beer. Probably the most famous myth, truth was they were hired as security guards by the Grateful Dead manager who had used them before at other concerts in the bay area and they were not paid in beer. Some people claim the Angels were given free beer but others deny it but the point being they were also paid money.

I am sure there are loads more.

yes, although I've heard two alternatives as to the reason :

1) it was a mistake and he thought the guy was GIVING him the guitar - and eventually returned it

2) he suspected the guy of trying to get him to sign a guitar which he would later auction, so he 'liberated' it

I think the first story is the true one, but the second one is funnier!

Just the slight correction; they lived together during periods of 1962-63,
but Phelge came in later; though his impact & company remained a while after
the South Chelsea/World´s End-era (he seemed to be closest attached to keith in the beginning, but during the post-Edith Grove-era Brian & Phelge were like the team). I also recommend Nankering With The Stones by Phelge, dont really know the difference beteween Phelge's Stones : the untold story of the Rolling Stones from Edith Grove and beyond & Nankering, but the former seems more detalied, at least its a thicker book. But the latter is enuff for me. Still; I`m gonna try to get hold of the former meself.

I enjoy reading Wyman´s (he´s seven years older than Keith & Mick, remember)
comments on Polka Dot Perkins, Green Jenkins etc; as well as reading about
Doris Richards comin there supplying food etc (Shepherd´s Pie?) to the starving, freezing lads.

More recent shots:
Phelge. 102 Edith Grove. A full Nanker.

i've read that this isn't right either - that Bill was there when he was supposed to be, and the Stones started when they were scheduled to start.
according to this version, there was no delay, just a long gap that was at least partly due to the Grateful Dead declining to play.

and speaking of nankers ...

Three full Nankers (or 2½)!
...What about a Nanker thread?
You don´t happen to have more Nankers, Withsssoul?

I´m no collector: But if I ever became one, I´d collect Nankers.

i do have another pair of nankers, Bro baby,
but i'll have to get them scanned.

another myth: that YCAGWYW was written in Brazil.
apparently it was Anita who started this myth, in an interview during the 80s -
ie, before the release of the Rock & Roll Circus, which proves it isn't so
(the Glimmer Twins didn't go to Brazil until after the Circus was filmed).
but this wrong story has taken on a life of its own,
and is now even incorporated in the very document that proves it false:
some journalist repeats it in one of the commentaries to that new release of the Circus.
scary how easy it is to hopelessly muddle up the historical record ...

Yes, I do think Bill made it in time for when they were scheduled to go on but when the Dead skipped out there was you say a big gap and if Bill had been their with the rest of the band they could have played earlier assuming they could clear the backstage for them even to get on stage. To be fair it was not Bill's fault.
