Shea Stadium in 1989. I'm not exactly sure if it was the 26th or 28th. I think it was not the one from which there's a widely circulating show.

Oslo, Sjølyst, June 65. The fans of the support act, The Pussycats, were paid by the Swedish manager Sten Ekroth to leave the concert arena when the Stones came on.

Altamont '69.

But I'm in awe of s-asla. Oslo, '65? What was it like? Please tell us!

No Expectations! I was there at Cow Palace too! Saw both shows. Remember how deafening the crowd was when they played 'Fanfare for the Common Man?'

AlwaysStoned and DaveG, 1964 and 1966. Please tell us what these early shows were like. I'm from the young crowd (Altamont '69), and that show has been talked about to death. But what about these earlier shows?

Leonard Keringer:

We were on the hill to the right of the stage, which was close enough to see Charlie's facial expressions easily. I remember we were commenting on how he seemed to bite his lip while he was playing, and we theorized that he might be clicking his teeth in time while he played. So we were CLOSE. But since we were up and to the right, we were completely untouched by the violence, which was extremely localized, directly in front of the stage. When I look at the B stage today (I was at MCI Monday night in DC), I'm amazed how close we were at Altamont. Then again, we arrived at about 5:30 in the morning and walked about a mile to get there, so ...

The Stones were great, actually. If you ever get a chance, check out a recording of the show. I couldn't get one until 1998, but when I did I was pleased to have the following memories confirmed:

1. Slowest version of JJF EVER. And KR drowned out everybody on that opener. You could barely hear even Charlie.

2. They played Brown Sugar for the first time live. The audience definitely laughed when Mick introduced this new tune.

3. After the second wave of violence, which resulted in the killing (though no one knew Meredith Hunter was dead, or even who he was, of course), things calmed down and the Stones proceeded to put on a very decent concert. But in light of the previous craziness, things seemed somewhat subdued after that. A lot of people in the audience were plainly exhausted at the end, EVERYBODY left after the Stones (had the Grateful Dead played, it would have been like a mausoleum). I also recall lots of people, commenting on the troubles of that concert as they left, joking: 'Only the Stones!'

Louisville, Cardinal Stadium, 1989, 19 years old. I've seen them on every tour since, but sure wish I could have seen them back in the day! I'll just have to go watch my Rock 'N' Roll Circus DVD again smiling smiley
