OT: Toots And The Maytals in Oslo September 20
Date: September 21, 2018 15:51

A tremendous show! Finally, I got to see one of my favourite reggae/ska-bands.

The band was tight, and Toots was the ultimate frontman. We always worry a wee bit about how our (old) heroes are doing on stage these days, but there was no reason to worry this time.

He belted out the classics with a voice as strong as ever: Monkey Man, 54-46 Was My Number, Pressure Drop, Sweet And Dandy, Time Tough, Country Roads, A Song Call Marley, Funky Kingston etc.

A great night out. Toots said he was surprised about the venue (Rockefeller - capacity: 1200) being packed. He couldn't remember playing a show in Oslo before.

I hope he comes back, I'll be there thumbs up

Toots is great.

This song is overlooked, but it has a relevant message:

Toots is great. Once I read that he is the one who came up with the word "reggae" to label the Jamaican music that him and other Jamaican musicians played at that time. Not bad Hubbert; the moniker has stuck around.

He did. Might have been as early as 1966.

I've seen Toots and the Maytals quite a few times throughout the years - from small clubs, theaters, and auditoriums, to opening for the Stones in Rotterdam '03 twice, and in San Diego in '05.
First time I saw them was in 1980 at Royce Hall at UCLA with the original Maytals lineup, opening for reggae band Third World.
I took my wife to see them when she and I first met with GA right up front center, and she instantly became a reggae fan thanks to Toots!

Here's a cool scene from The Harder They Come movie (1972)with Toots and the Maytals in the studio while Jimmy Cliff lurks around:

Late 70's Toots played a full throttle...Otis Redding style soul reggae show at the Collendina Hotel in Ocean Grove.
After the show a gang of us waited around to see
if we could speak to him....but after about an hour
or so most of us split except for two of my mates who
eventually got to talk to and share a spliff with Toots.

Anyway as a good will gesture Toots gave the headband
he was wearing to my mate Mark...The next day Mark rocks
around to tell me the story and says....
"You dig reggae more than me so here you can have Toot's headband.."

keep it in a special box.......FANKS Mark

Went to see the toots last wednesday, in a venue ( Birmingham Digbeth institute ) which I would love to see the stones in.

Anyway a great atmosphere and toots knows how to deliver, just wished it was either a Friday or Saturday evening.

Got David Byrne to see, at the end of October, which is a Friday night. thumbs up
