Your favorite live version of Start Me Up is?

...Mine is none. They have never done justice to that song live. I'll go for the studio version anytime. What about you?

Havana is pretty cool. The slower tempo and the Matt Clifford keyboard claps give a vibe to the song that id more similar to the original version and not as rushed as on previous tours

I always think Keith botches the opening riffs to it, no matter how many overdubs they use when they mix the albums.

It's a bit like Mick screwing up the lyrics to Tumbling Dice at nearly every gig.

However, I do like both the 24th Feb and 26th Feb 1990 Tokyo Dome treatments; it shows them as back in business.

1st show Boston 2013. I remember going to the lobby to catch the Bruins-Blackhawks Stanley Cup finals score. All of a sudden the intro to SMU came thru loud and clear. That intro was so perfect I had to take notice like no other I'd seen live.

Agree with Dandie, it's Atlantic City 1989. That was also probably the last great version of "Miss You."

Probably the first two times I saw them play it in 1981 when it was still fresh - not long after that I sort of grew to dislike it.
That said, it definitely has it's place during Stones shows (90% or more of the people in attendance love it!), and I'd probably miss it if it wasn't played....or maybe not.
But come to think of it, SMU has probably been played at every Stones show I've ever attended....when was the last time they didn't play it?

Agree with Stoneage. The studio version is really something.

They have never done a decent live version. This is not a good song at all either. IT was a song that is geared only to be liked for a few months until you do too used to the riffs. I loved it when it first came out and i still remember hearing it for the first time while listening to the radio one day. It was over by 1982.

I do not necessarily agree with the latter part there, Stanlove. SMU is their last big hit song. Rivaled by no other song since 1981. Still a favorite in sports arenas all over the world.
The studio version, that is. It's their post 1981 signature song really.

I like the San Jose 99 version sadly on the album they cut out the part between Keith and Charlie which is annoying

Cirkus, Stockholm, 07.22.2003. They are on fire on this opening tune. Unfortunately the rest of the show is somewhat unsurprising.

start me up is overrated, its one of those stones songs which is lauded well above its real level, some other stones songs are overrated, but most are underrated.

best live version i think would be from 1981-92 period, probably still life.

Yes, that one. All other live versions are lame ducks in comparison.

This is great with Keith so high in the mix, shows what Keith is as a player, this sound set up, why does he not achieve this all the time, its incredible, any more footage with this sound mix out there.

1981 tour for me. No live version comes close to me, although many are good. The drums were best on this tour for me, raising it above any later version.

I like the version on Still Life just because in the chorus Jagger sings Grown Man Cry like on the studio version: Cryyyyy and not the short cry like he's done ever since.
