Exactly...its the whole album!!!!! Lets make them stop touring and lock them up in a kitchen to do another one!

We have had some 33-34 years to judge & melt Exile.
I will let my thinkin grow till 2028, or - better and
more correct 2029 before I type it.
I will be 75 by then. Even older than Wyman!

But I think they are in the same league, those albums:
aBB knocked off my old "GHS is my fav album"-state totally.

It does not matter to me if it's the best album since or whatever. To me it matters that it's an album where song by song it leads through the peak.
To have 16 songs on an album which I still like to listen to all is very rare to me. I wish they still would do like " an Evening with a bigger bang" and play the whole album without regrets. Perhaps one or two additions and that's it. Imagine it would be something totally different.
(I know Pink floyd did it on most of their tours)

Bianca,

Sorry to reply so late to you but with regard to tiring of ABB......

I'm already bored with it and have no feeling of need to play it.

Depth and Sinceity are two of the last descriptions which come to mind regarding most of the tracks on this (very accomplished) Mick Jagger album.

I've gone into endless deatail about its loud drums and vocals. It's not an organic, natural sound like on Exile. It's manufactured and forced. But done with great craftmanship.

Yes, it leaves that feeling - "That's the best Mick Jagger album in years".

And yes, it's most definitely the best Rolling Stones album in 8 years too.

Aint it just cool that you guys are even talking about ABB in the same sentence at EOMS????? There's a 32 year gap!! And why in any of the above lists is none of the sixties albums mentioned? Voodoo Lounge really better than Aftermath?

Exile is as important as Sgt Pepper/Revolver or the Velvets first album. Bigger bang is a good effort from the first real lifestyle rock band but its just an album. No groundbreaking, nothing new at all. They were still at their best during Exile, they are retired now, if you look at their output.

Uhm, have you ever listen to "the Rolling Stones", "12x5", "Out of Our Heads" and "The Rolling Stones Now"??!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!

IMO they are true classics and belong in my "big" list.

No! I am telling YOU so NOW!

It'll be forgotten in twenty five weeks - not years. (It only took me 25 days).

People will hail Exile in the year 2525! ("if man is still alive etc.")

This album will render acknowledgement i some time!
Nowadays everyone seems to love bashing it for being a repeat of
something else. There's just one factor to this and it's that the
Stones have made us so many good albums that we nowadays don't appreciate
their later ones.

A bigger bang is an album that will live on for a long long time!

This one is just what it says "A Bigger Bang", thanx a lot guys!

i don't compare the Stones to anyone, not even to themselves. ABB is a wonderful strong album.
i was surprised by how much of it i dug immediately (i'm not usually that easy!),
and am blown away by how it keeps sounding better and better.
there's something just-off-center about it that keeps catching me off guard, wrestling me to the floor and doin things to me.
and that's fine with me - mighty mighty fine. :E

It was nice to get something new from the band, and a couple of the songs have a nice groove, but I don't think ABB will ever be widely regarded as a classic.

This is a preposterous argument.

The Stones got to where they are today because of the big four. Those four albums, in addition to several gems that came before them, are why sites like this one exist, and why we're even here talking about them in the first place.

ABB is a good, solid record that has given us reason to be happy with the Stones at this late point in their career. But if it were the first album that they ever put out, it would be considered an average debut that might or might not lead to better things from the band in the future.

DIRTY WORK=Worst stones album of all time, with emotional rescue.......
Lots of fillers,, half of it good, and some hits.

another quality of music men, it surprise me of ypou cause I recognise you made interest posts, but this one...

Re: A terribly contoversial Bigger Bang proclamation:

Ok, I knew that ranking Dirty Work and some of the others where I did would get me in trouble. Here's my rationale:

For me to love an album, at least half the songs have to be outstanding. That's the case for me with these:

It's Only Rock 'N' Roll (5 out of 10):
If You Can't Rock Me, Ain't Too Proud to Beg, Dance Little Sister, It's Only Rock 'n Roll, Time Waits for No One

Bridges To Babylon (10 out of 13):
Flip the Switch, Out of Control, Anybody Seen My Baby?, Saint of Me, Low Down, Might As Well Get Juiced, Gunface, You Don't Have to Mean It, Thief in the Night, How Can I Stop

Black And Blue (6 out of 8):
Hot Stuff, Memory Motel, Crazy Mama, Hand of Fate, Melody, Cherry Oh Baby

Voodoo Lounge (8 out of 15):
Love Is Strong, I Go Wild, You Got Me Rocking, Sparks Will Fly, Out of Tears, Thru and Thru, Mean Disposition, Moon Is Up

Dirty Work (6 out of 10):
One Hit (to the Body)
Harlem Shuffle
Dirty Work
Fight
Too Rude
Sleep Tonight

But not with these:

The Rolling Stones (5 out of 12):
Route 66, I'm a King Bee, I Just Want to Make Love to You, Carol, Tell Me

The Rolling Stones No. 2 (5 out of 12):
You Can't Catch Me, Time Is on My Side, Down the Road Apiece, I Can't Be Satisfied, Pain In My Heart

Out Of Our Heads (5 out of 12):
She Said Yeah, That's How Strong Love My Love Is, Heart of Stone, Good Times, I'm Free

Aftermath (5 out of 14):
Mother's Little Helper, Stupid Girl, Lady Jane, Out of Time,Under My Thumb

Between The Buttons (4 out of 12):
Yesterday's Papers, Connection, She Smiled Sweetly, Back Street Girl

Satanic Majesties (3 out of 10):
She's a Rainbow, 2000 Man, 2000 Light Years from Home

Goat's Head Soup (4 out of 10):
Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo, Angie, Star Star, Winter (sorry, not crazy about Silver Train or Coming Down like many people are)

Emotional Rescue (4 out of 10):
Emotional Rescue, She's So Cold, All About You, Down in the Hole

Undercover (3 out of 10):
Undercover of the Night, She Was Hot, Wanna Hold You

Steel Wheels (5 out of 12):
Mixed Emotions, Can't Be Seen, Slipping Away, Continental Drift, Hold on to Your Hat

What songs on albums in that last group do you guys really like, besides the ones I mentioned? None of them really stand out to me, and I have been listening to the whole catalogue repeatedly lately.

The problem with their 1960s albums before Beggar's is that most of the really good stuff of that era was not on them, they were singles. Songs like Satisfaction, Jumping Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women, Paint It Black, Get Off My Cloud, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Ruby Tuesday and many more weren't on any studio album (I'm assuming we are agreed that the British releases and not the U.S. ones are the "official" versions).

And hey, I may have been dissing their 1960s studio albums in favor of more recent ones, but at least I'm not crazy enough to claim A Bigger Bang is better than Exile smiling smiley ABB is a great album, but not better than the big four or Some Girls.

Re: A terribly contoversial Bigger Bang proclamation:

This is a bit silly really cos we could all make our own lists on a similar basis and everyone's list would be different.

I totally, totally disagree with your take on the 60s albums pre Beggars.

The first three are simply first rate. They weren't designed as 'albums' - they just went into the studio and knocked out some songs. They put all the best ones down on the record. Aftermath is the first where they were consciously 'making an album'. I don't much like it because of that rather self conscious approach, especially regarding production. Too clean and controlled.

Buttons much looser.
Satanics - much further out!

Correct balance of discipline and rough edge for the next four.

BTW I think If You Can't Rock Me is really substandard - Stones rocker by rote.
Ditto Dance Little Sister. Again, designer album.

I can see why someone who likes those tracks will like much of Voodoo and much of ABB.

>> What songs on albums in that last group do you really like, besides the ones I mentioned? <<

just for starters?

The Rolling Stones: Mona, Honest I Do, Can I Get a Witness ...
Out Of Our Heads: Mercy Mercy, That's How Strong My Love Is, UnderAssistant West Coast Promotion Man ...
Aftermath: Going Home, High & Dry, I Am Waiting, Think, Doncha Bother Me, It's Not Easy ...
Between The Buttons: Miss Amanda Jones, Please Go Home, Complicated, All Sold Out ...
Satanic Majesties: The Lantern, Citadel, On With the Show ...
Undercover: Tie You Up, Feel On Baby, Too Tough, Too Much Blood ...
Steel Wheels: Almost Hear You Sigh, Break the Spell, Terrifying ...

(and for the record: i love Dirty Work.)

The Rolling Stones : Pretty much the remaining 7 songs

Aftermath : At least High and dry and Flight 505. The
remaining songs have some nice parts, too, although they
are admittedly of somewhat lower quality. But the thing
is, these 7 best songs are so strong (in particular
Out Of Time and Under My Thumb) that this album is one of
the best Stones records.

In fact, I think the "Big 4" should be changed to the "Big 6"
by adding these two albums.

I really like ABB, though, especially after I got the double
LP vinyl version. Somehow it sounds even better!

Bianca, I'm with you. You guys didn't comprehend a word she wrote. Basically, (correct me if I'm wrong Bianca), she is saying that ABB is strong enough to potentially be thought of as one of the Stones greatest works at some point in the future. She is NOT comparing EOMS to ABB in September 2005. And I'm in agreement that there is an intangible undercurrent running through ABB that gives it staying power. That's how classics are made.

This is a funny statement.
Wasn't it in the 60's the other way around, that parents didn't allow their kids to listen to the Stones.
And now the kids are telling their parents not to listen to the Stones !
Hillarious !

I totally agree:

EOMS, LIB, SF, SG, TY and ABB will be rated as their greatest albums, for sure.

ABB will be forgotten in no time. At the moment it's just the novelty of a new Stones album after an 8 year wait. It's better than i predicted but i don't think it's really that great.

Re: A terribly contoversial Bigger Bang proclamation:

it definately won't go down in history as a landmark cd....its not the stones time anymore for that type of "impact" album/cd.....but i know i'll always thinks its an excellent cd...solid all the way through...just like "its only rocknroll"& "goats head soup"
