Mick solo CD compilation
Posted by: deg01 ()

Hi,

I wanted to make a CD of the best of Mick's solo career. I don't have Primative Cool and She's the Boss and am wondering if I am missing anything special on these albums.

I do have Wandering Spirit, Goddess In the Doorway, and the Alfie soundtrack. I think there is some great music on these albums which is what I would use to make a compilation from.

Here is a list of potential songs:

- Wired All Night
- Sweet Thing
- Out of Focus
- Don't Tear Me Up
- Evening Gown
- Wandering Spirit
- Hang On To Me Tonight
- I've Been Lonely For So Long

- Visions of Paradise
- Joy
- Dancing In the Starlight
- Hide Away
- Don't Call Me Up
- Goddess In the Doorway
- Too Far Gone
- Brand New Set of Rules

- Old Habits Die Hard
- Blind Leading the Blind (Live Acoustic Version)
- Let's Make It Up
- Blind Leading the Blind
- Old Habits Reprise

Any suggestions on a track list?

Thanks,
Dan

Missing:

Lonely at the top
Lucky in love
She's the boss (I just like the tongue in cheek nature of this song)
Party Doll
Kow Tow
First song from Primitive Cool (Can't remember which one it is..NOT Let's work!).

just go with Wandering Spirit - that is his "greatest hits" album, as far as I'm concerned. Nothing on the others matches up with it.

Catch As Catch Can

The first song on Primitive Cool is "Throwaway", it definitely should be on there, as well as "Say You Will". Also, outside stuff like "You're So Vain" with Carly Simon, "Nothing But The Wheel" and "Pretty Lady" with Peter Wolf, and maybe even "State Of Shock" with The Jacksons, among others.

(You Got to Walk and) Don't Look Back, with Peter Tosh

Nice catch on You're so vain, Elmo, not a lot of people know he's on there, but if you know to listen for him, he's easy to find.

Hey, I forgot about the Peter Tosh song. it's great!!! Good call.

Mick almost takes over the choruses on "You're So Vain" after the first one. Looks similar to Carly also. I read somewhere that they were an item once. True?

Yep, they sure were. Putting two sets of lips that large in one room is bound to violate some kind of zoning law.

Hmmm, Jagger songs ... always liked Ruthless People from the soundtrack of the Ruthless People movie. Dancing In The Streets with Bowie is not bad. State of Shock is good, but go with the Tina Turner duet version from Live Aid, not the Michael Jackson duet version.

Wasn't Lucky In Love the working title of an unreleased demo song from the Stones in the 70's? It sort of had a reggae feel to it if I remember correctly. Mick's solo album version is not the same song as this is it? Thanks.

Deg01,

T&A is right...Wandering Spirit is what you need.

Most of the stuff on She's The Boss & Primitive Cool is way to dated production wise...totally slick...

stuff I used to like was:

from She's The Boss:
Just Another Night
1/2 a loaf
Secrets

from Primitive Cool:
Throwaway
Kow Tow
Shoot Off Your Mouth

But time has taken it's toll on a lot of his 80's solo stuff...WANDERING SPIRIT is for the most part a timeless production thanks to Rick Rubin.

on you're so vain: i have heard that she wrote it ABOUT mick.

The Stones Lonely at the Top sounds nothing like Mick's; maybe he liked the title so he wrote a new song around it.

Party Doll is a great song....should have been on a Stones album...a forgotten classic. The Jagger haters won't give it credit, but check it out for yourself.

I beg to differ. It's been rewritten a bit, but at the core it's definitely the same song.

Catch As Catch can is a great song but does not appear to be on any official CD. I had it on an old 45 RPM. Same for I'm Ringing.

Doesnt Lonely At The Top credit the writers as Jagger/Richards. The only Mick solo tune to bear that partnership.

Even though Keith probably had nothing to do with it , it may be based on a song they were working on.

Another good one: If Things Could Be Different

And the single version of Hard Woman is superior to the album version (but not easy to find).

Re: Mick solo CD compilation

Dare I say that you might need to do two cds of Jagger's solo work?I made a compilation cdr of 78+ minutes for my brother back in '01 because,he bought and liked Goddess In The Doorway. So,my point is,the 78+ minutes of material was all '84-'93 Jagger Solo tracks, mostly She's The Boss and Wandering Spirit with a couple of Primitive Cool tracks. If you include all of these songs suggested earlier in this thread, you could easily fill two 80 minute cdrs with worthy material. It just goes to show how overshadowed some of these guys' work is.
