I'll second that.The founders of the band. Subtle & solid. The singers in this group usually get most of the cedit.
I feel terrible for Phil because he took the brunt of the abuse for it when it was mostly Jimmy's fault for being drunk out of his mind...plus Robert's voice was blown out, but at least he tried.
I agree. I don't understand why.
Dee Murray was IMO a very unique bassist. I do believe he was a bassman's bassist. Not a demoted guitarist
. But he was not an in-the-pocket guy. Like one often reads about great drummers, he followed the lead vocal.
Nigel was often mixed so oddly that it is haRD to hear them as a section.
And Elton's songs were usually not groove songs anyway.
I tell you a beautiful segment of Dee Murray is the whole outro of 'Love Lies Bleeding'.
It's a bit puzzling indeed. I saw Moon and the Ox mentioned as «underrated». How can they be?

Why? They are very effective for U2’s music.
Funny, but after Gary Valentine left I lost interest. His Wilco Johnson-inspired moves onstage added some needed dynamics to a pretty static live act.
Speaking of Wilco, how about John B. Sparks and The Big Figure as an underrated rhythm section?
In the sense that most people just talk about Chuck and Muddy, I would say yes. Musicians and true fans think the world of them, but the average fan probably doesn't know their names or notice when they're not present. That's part of how I've approached this thread. Not so much underrated as unsung heroes (to reference a Woody tune).
True for the most part, but Karen did play all the drum parts on their first LP (with Osborn on bass), select tracks on subsequent albums, and virtually all of "Now and Then" in '73 (all but one song), again with Osborn.
Most music fans could not tell you who Chuck's/ Muddy's bass / drummers were so it is not unreasonable to say they were underrated.
I will give you Ox and Moonie though and it was my mistake mentioning them.

I think most rhythym sections are underrated and don't get the credit they deserve, some more than others of course. Didn't mean to derail the thread as I was just going by the thread title.

Maybe not underrated, but overlooked due to the less than praiseworthy view of him as a singer/songwriter - be it post-Gabriel Genesis or his solo career.

I like Gary a lot, but the majority of the hits here with Nigel. Gary became an interesting figure since then in esoteric circles. I've been lucky enough to cross paths with him and become somewhat friendly with him thanks to a shared interest or two. He's a nice guy. Not once have I brought up Blondie. I suspect it would put up a barrier that doesn't exist today.
