But... back when good ole John Wooden set the final four appearance record it was easier to be in the Final Four, at least there were fewer hoops to jump through to get there. It is easy to forget that not long ago (1978) only 32 teams started out in the tourney.
In 1939 there were only 8 teams in the tourney
In 1950 there were still only 8 teams in the tourney
In 1951 there were 16 teams
In 1978 there doubled it to 32 teams
In 1983 there were 52 teams... and in 1984 they added 1 to get to 53 teams
The 64 team tourney began in only 1985... (seems like only 10-15 years ago).
Then sometimes they added a some more chum... and now we have 68 teams.
I think 64 is enough myself, but whatever they see fit to do is fine by me.
I love this thing... it is the most sports fun event of the year, it is madness, but it is fun

12 Final Four appearances John Wooden

Just to clarify, there were 22-25 teams in the tournament for nine of Wooden's wins, and 32 for his last title in '75...'75 was the first year with 32 teams. The first expansion of the tournament field was from 16 to 22 in 1953.

Nice clarification, it's weird to consider so few teams in it to win it... but... well... you know.
As Nova is putting the wood to Kansas to start the 2nd game of the night!! 14-4! ITS RAINING 3s!!

Back in the day, it was primarily conference winners in the tournament.
I only know this stuff because I'm a UCLA grad...I risk having my alumni membership revoked otherwise.

GO BLUE! They have Wagner and the nastiest defense in the country. We'll see if Villanova will be able to bomb away from the three like they are tonight. Kansas is soft on D. Michigan will be a whole other story. Wagner was a rebounding machine tonight. Should be a great title game of blue bloods.
GO BLUE!

Looking forward to watching tonight's game. I'll be rooting for Villanova. Not exactly sure why.
