Undercover, 1983.

First record was Still Life, purchased by chance two
weeks after release. Then I fell in love with that band.

And here I am.

I had all of their catalog including Greatest Hits compilations and etc...
but the very first time I actually remembering anticipating the
release on a particular day that I would be absolutely ready for, was SF.

During those teen years I worked in a least two different record stores,
managing one of those departments, as part of a larger Department Store Chain.
...well knew when it was coming; i ripped open the shipment and put it on before I opened the rest of the boxes or put a pile of 'em in the bin.

I guess the PR had REALLY expanded exponentially in the wake of Banquet and Bleed,
for a lot of reasons....the '69 tour knocked everyone out; (i didn't go but had the Boot).
But this was the beginning also, of Rolling Stones Record; with the unmistakable brand,
so also that garnered a LOT of cross-promotional features and press-ads and interviews about it; the cover and Warhol etc...lots of endless press....
it was anticipated...baited like a trap and i'm glad i bit...

,,,and not just
for retailers or their slaves like me; or peeps in the actual Industry per se, who's business it was, was
to anticipate, promote and get ready to stock product, but also to the fans...
so that one I remember for sure.
I def was also anticpating exoms tho not working in record stores anymore by that time.

Oh my, am I the only one? Dirty Work. Yup on the day it came out. I was 16. I had Undercover but I don't think I bought it the day of release.

I didn't BUY them the day of release, but know for a fact that I received and heard them the day of, as far back as 'Exile', because my dad would get them. Then I took over at "Some Girls". I only was late for "Emotional Rescue"; was living in Holland at that time, and, uh...circumstances kept me.

STILL LIFE. I recall buying the day it was released on Tuesday or Wednesday, but couldn't listen it for rest of the week (my family was having some trip), just watching it's sleeve and trying to imagine how it sounds like... Honestly, I thought the the front cover actually was odd, but the photos inside were damn cool, especially Keith's face with a smoke. Damn, they looked old for my 13 years old eyes.... But the music, when I finally got to listen it, was simply phenomenal. Strange, but fascinating sounds. Totally different anything I've heard from them or anyone by then. So 'older statesmen of rock -like'. By then, my only point of reference them playing live was GOT LIVE IF YOU WANT IT and YA-Ya'S! albums - and they sounded totally different in STILL LIFE. Almost like a different band.

Then a couple of weeks later I made a car trip with my family to Sweden, and on the ferry from Turku to Stockholm there were, by accident, lots of Finnish people going to Gothenburg shows. Older folks, tongue shirts, smoking and drinking, having a ball... so cool... Me, a young kid, was so jealous.grinning smiley I speak to this very nice young couple heading for the shows, they were just married and the chick looked absolutely stunning..... Then 16 yaers later I ran for her again by accident, and she somehow remembered me ('aah, that young boy crazy for the Stones'). Anyway, she was divorced and I was a single too, so.. you know... things happened, and we were a nice item for a couple of years... saw some Stones shows together as well... aah, memories... 'Seemed about a hundred years ago'... Sorry going OT and so bloody personal - anyway, we are still good friends and she reads this site occasionally (so hi for You, soul sister!)... smoking smiley

So STILL LIFE it was.

Still Life followed by Undercover were the first two albums purchased on their release.

Before that my first ever album was the Hits double album Rolled Gold, followed closely by Tattoo You and Emotional Rescue in that order. After this i made it my business to buy everything they ever made on every format for the rest of my life. Still to this day i have this compulsion to get every album, even solo albums from Mick eye rolling smiley .

These albums changed my life for the better, i still get excited when i haven't played an album for a year or so, last night i played Let It Bleed and it still blows my mind.

Looking forward to the next one smoking smiley

Well, I guess DW was my first, too. However, I got it for free the day prior to its release, as I worked in a record store back then smiling smiley

When was your first time buying a Stones album as soon as it went on sale? Let's see how far back we can go .Mine was Undercover. I was one year late on Tattoo You.

Goats Head Soup in 1974. I was 14 and had recently become a rabid fan thanks to my older brother's copy of Ya Yas. The die was cast. I bought a whole lot of Stones albums on their release day ever since then!

Although with "Rolling Stones 2" I was close, but as of "Out of our heads" (European/UK version) I was spot on. In the seventies I spent a couple of years in Japan and never managed to figure out the exact release days of IORR and B&B, but back in "the low countries" I again bought a couple of albums on release, but as of the eighties I started to take it easy (fatherhood winking smiley ).
Sticky Fingers (I was in the UK that year) I consider as my most treasurable "on release day" buy, because the cover + logo were a sensation and I have some unique memories because of that smileys with beer

Re: Your first Purchase of a Stones album the day of release

I got into the Stones around 2009/2010 and didn't really rush out to buy any of their compilations, so Blue & Lonesome would have been the only one I bought on release day.

Except I didn't.

It was a Christmas present.

Having said that, I have never bought a Stones album on release day. grinning smiley

Beggars... Though in Australia before the internet, release day here was a couple of interminable months after the rest of the world in those days.
