problems burning cd-r's

Since last night I have problems burning cd-r's at my PC. The number of tracks and their timings are listed, but only the first track has audio for about the first ten seconds or so. The rest of the tracks are empty.

I get this message:

hardware error: write 30576 bytes at position 611
error situation: undefined
sense information: 70 00 0B 00 00 etc.

command: 2A 00 00 00 etc.

and:

hardware error: open track o
error situation: undefined
sense information: 70 00 05 etc.
command: 2A 00 FF FF FF 6A etc.

Anyone know what this means and how to solve it? I use Pinnacle, the burner I think is a NEC.

just to add: I have no problems burnin photo's.

Have you tries re-installing the software? Usually works.

I already had this kind of trouble.
I suppose you can perfectly read them on your PC ?
if you can, then there are 2 explanations to me :
the first one may deal with defectuous clusters in your hard drive, so maybe you can fix the problem with scandisk
if it has been repaired and you still have the trouble, then, the second one is about your burner ..unfortunately you'll have to change it..
that's what I eventually did.

Is maddening, sometimes you just seem
to ge gremlins ina system and can do
nada. On others, no problemo at all.

BTW has anybody else had problems with
computer burned discs that crap out
three to five years later, tho
they originally played great?
Not just cheapo blue die
discs either............?

Don't want to start a computer discussion here but if you're using windoze, try reinstalling the software as turd suggests. Scandisk is normally pretty useless. Try find some better hard disk scan software. Or buy a new burner ( that is, if you're not using a laptop ) they are pretty cheap. Don't be afraid to open the box, it's really easy.

What an advice to "buy a new burner" - seems to be the thing Windows users are used to? I hope not.
Instead of buying and paying do something for your mental fitness and learn Linux.

You could also try using different burning software - Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) is the best, and it's free as well.

Ahoy Captain! I think the advice was directed at me, and since any advice is welcome, esp. a well-reasoned, I think Whale should be thanked instead of be talked to in a rude way (as well as the others).

Since I am not the person the advice was directed to I can comment it in any way I like. This is not rude but normal behaviour. Or would you really thank me for my maybe well-reasoned advice to just shut up?

There is good advice and there is not so good advice. Think about it.

Any chance the problem is in what you're trying to burn?

After trying four TDK'S and one Fuji probably not.

Captain, for someone with hardly enough time at hand to sit behind his home PC at night, leaning Linux might just not be first the way to go.

I just showed an alternative to buying new hardware. But besides it isn't very hard to use Linux since a graphical user interface like KDE looks just like Windows. Even I can handle it.

No, I mean maybe you're trying to burn something like a broken FLAC file, which doesn't work.

Don't know exactly what a FLAC file is, but I tried burning 3 different boots, all copied before without a hitch. Storing them on the hard disk first went ok. The problems started when I bunt them on cd-r. Only the first 10 seconds or so of the 1st track were stored on the cdr, for the rest just empty tracks.

A broken FLAC file, would that mean a hard- or software problem?

(free lossless audio codec - I get that)

How fast is the speed when you're burning? Try lowering it to 4 x.
A firmware-update for your CD-burner might help.
good luck
