Ron Wood out after A Bigger Bang tour?
Posted by: ohnonotyouagain ()

There seems to be quite a bit of anti-Ronnie sentiment on the board. I love his playing but concede he's lost something. If I had to vote one way or another, I'd like to see Ronnie go solo after this tour, something that would probably make him happier anyway, and the Stones get a new guitarist. A hotter, better guitarist. It could really give the band a creative kick in the ass. Waddy Watchell comes to mind, and I'm sure there are other good candidates.

So the question is, if you had to vote, would you vote that Ronnie is replaced after this tour, and if so by who?

never happen.....if ronnie leaves at this late date, why go on?.....the band would call it a day,...or else go on as a three piece blues band with daryyl jones in the background playing bass and getting no props...and i guess that would be OK....but no new guitarist....naw..no way....

We don't get to vote on this
and decide what the Stones will
do. Nope. It doesn't work that way.
They can and will do as they please.
And thank god for that!!!!!

It's not that we can tell the Stones what to do (if so I would make them play Rip This Joint every night and make them give me their T-Shirt money, bwaa ha ha), it's just our opinion as to what we'd like them to do. It's a fun imaginary exercise, so lighten up!

won't happen - but if Mick knew 25 years ago what would become of Woody, he might have changed horses then...too late now - they all know it.

He will be replaced before Friday's show.

So it is written, so let it be done.

It's sad to see Ron Wood fall so far from his edgy playing in the Faces and on so many a Stones recording. But then again, a man that plays entirely by feel must have an enormous obstacle to overcome in having to live with alcoholism, a disease that may have eroded those inherent instincts. And what hasn't been eroded by the disease has surely been marginalized by Mick Jagger, who decided to leave Ronnie off 6 tracks on ABB. I think I would play like crap too in concert if I was treated like that. Ron used to be part of the creative process, but beginning with Bridges he became little more than a session musician. Although Ron gets bashed on this board, the general public wants to see the Stones. And being Mick Jagger is only concerned about "legitimacy" these days, he has probably conceded to the fact he needs Ronnie, not for his abilities, but basically to put in an appearance and not muddle things up too bad.

And getting right down to it, Keith hasnt exactly been laying down the most impressive solos himself. In Albany Ronnie was terrible on lead and Keith was about one step behind him. The key difference, however, is Keith played tremendously well outside of the pure lead, keeping the band together, and occasionally covering for Ronnie playing "Popeye the Sailor Man" over in the corner.

But once again, if I were Ronnie, I'd be bitter as hell and I'd just show up, collect my paycheck, and play about as bad as I could until things started changing. Besides as bad as ABB is, maybe they should start letting Ronnie and Charlie write the songs...couldn't get much worse!!!

Hell, I'd replace him with Mick Taylor, but that's just me.

Sacrilege. Why don't we just call in Pete Best to replace Charlie Watts while we're at it too? Argh!

I guess he has more class.

Oh, and have you listened to ABB? Just curious...

LOL about Popeye the Sailor Man, Brian Jones' old standby when he was pissed. Don't agree tht ABB is bad, though. Great album and great playing by Ronnie, on his 10 tracks. He can cut it in the stuido but is quickly reaching the point where he can't cut it live. He has been treated badly but he deserves it. He is lucky to stil be in the band, and a full financial partner at that. He ought to be playing his ass off and trying to keep his job instead of dogging it because his feelings are hurt, if that is what he's doing. I think he is not dogging it, he is doing his best, he just has lost a lot of his ability.

Can't you just quit crapping on this guy? Isn't there something else to complain about more original or timely? Wood detractors why not show up en masse at a hotel where the Stones are staying and wait for Ronnie to show up so you can tell him much you can't stand him to his face. Be manly about it and tell him he sucks.

Not everyone will consider a thread
about kicking Ronnie out of the band
light entertainment, but go ahead
have your fun, if thats the spirit
in which it is intended. How much
you wanna bet there's going to be
a fight? But nope, not with me.
I'm not into any negative
Stones stuff and with that
will bow out of this thread
before it gets too hot,
discretion being the
better part of
valour. Adios!

Because that'd be silly.

I should have said "and his replacement can't be Mick Taylor" because you know that is never going to happen. Too much water under the bridge. Still , vote for Taylor if you want, but I'd still like to know your second choice.

Is Taylor even still a decent player? Haven't heard anything he's done since that Dylan album and tour 20 years ago. He was quite good on that, and of course awesome back in the day. Keith would never have him back, do you think?

I agree, he just sucks now. I've never been a huge fan, but when I compare his current stuff to, say, anything he did on Some Girls, he's worse than ever.

I believe that quote about valour is applied to cowards: for cowards discretion is the better part of valour.

Might wanna check that.

I would never do that... He's a Stone! I love him. We're just doing this for shits and giggles!

i think ron's been integral in keeping this band together, had he not been a part of it they would have folded somewhere around the mid 80's. remember that, and for god's sake sake stop being such petty ingrates you RW bashers!

As saddened and frustrated as I have been with Ronnie declining skills, I still love the guy. I wouldn't want to see him go.

Big Bang and James Burton, I am going to confidently go ahead and say your head needs to be removed from the arse!

Ron Wood sounds fine to me, in fact if you can string it better, give Mick a call otherwise flaggg yourself and get off Ron. For c -sakes even suggesting that Ron would take a seat before the final bow is blasphemous!!!!!

You're right. Ronnie is a Stone. I know the Stones arent a warm and fuzzy clan, but he could use some support in getting his act together. He has always been the upbeat one and has been integral in keeping the band together. When his hour (well, actually years) of need came calling, all that has happened his him getting kicked around. It says it all when Mick Jagger introduces him as "Ronnie Rehab Wood."

I can understand people rallying around Charlie for beating cancer, but they need to lend the same support to Ronnie. Alcoholism is nasty stuff. I think some support and a little less condescending treatment from Jagger would go miles in bringing the guy back to his cheerful self, which would in turn probably do wonders for his guitar work.

How many chances does one guy get? His substance abuse has been a major problem since at least 1981.

Very, very true. God, I admire Mick's discipline and work ethic, but I think a bit of empathy would go a long way. Not everyone can have the body of a 21 year old at 62 and be able to stay clean after years of substance abuse.

Ronnie does need help and support, but at the same time, he needs to grow up. He's 58, he has a family.

Same with Keith actually. His mythical constitution, notwithstanding, he could drop at any moment. I think Mick and Charlie have proven that clean living after a certain age is the way to maintain your craft.

Camper -nope I got it right!
We fight too much about Stone
guitarists on this board.
After awhile is just
negative, not worth-
while.
