Elton’s the real deal - an extremely talented musician and performer.

Had the good fortune to catch the last show of his Farewell Tour, yesterday evening in Stockholm. He and the band were great. Sad to see him go though.

Davey and Nigel still with him? They were when I saw him in 2013.

Does anyone know if Bernie Taupin was there? I haven’t seen any mention of it.

All 3 of them were with Elton when I saw him at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1974!

Not for tours I would think, but for one-off performances here and there, quite possibly !

Watching this now. All very good performances so far. Billy Porter just did a really great job with The Bitch Is Back.

Disappointed they couldn't get Low Cut Connie for this. Elton has publicly called him out and they'd have been a great addition.

Lol, most of my Searches on IORR fail miserably, which was again the case Apr 13 when I was looking for an OT: Elton thread. I posted this on '"Listening to this minute?" instead. Anyway, don't miss this performance.

Elton John & Bernie Taupin were awarded this year's Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. A tribute concert was held at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. on March 20. It aired on PBS this past Monday night, April 8, 2024.

Of the tribute performances my favorite was Bennie and the Jets performed by a guy who I didn't even who he was.

Absolutely agree with the Metallica comments. Awesome performance. You could tell Elton and Bernie were impressed by it, too.

Brandi Carlile was great, too, with Madman Across The Water and Skyline Pigeon. According to Pete Townshend, Elton recorded a new album with her:

Anyway, the show made me wish the forever or rather "Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour" was still going!

Metallica sure do great cover tunes. My favourite Metallica tune is their cover of Whiskey In The Jar. Great Youtube vid of them doing it live at Slane Castle a few years back.

Just a weigh in. If you can, check the Gershwin show on PBS, utoob or grab a torrent. Hadn't listened to Elton in ages but this award show was so damn good. I even enjoyed Elton singing Your Song, a tune I have loathed for years.

I believe it was after hearing her debut album... or maybe it was The Story, I forget... Elton sought Brandi Carlile out, brought her to his house, mentored her, and is a huge fan of hers. He was fascinated by her songwriting and performing, and it sounds like saw in her a lot he identified with, from his own start in the industry decades ago. So them doing an album together would not be a surprise at all.

Elton John Looks Back at Career in New Trailer for ‘Never Too Late’ Documentary

Film about music icon's legacy hits theaters November 15 before arriving on Disney+ on December 13

By Daniel Kreps

Disney+

Elton John: Never Too Late, a documentary about the music icon looking back on his career ahead of his final U.S. concert, will head to Disney+ this December following its premiere earlier this month at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Ahead of its December 13 arrival on the streaming service, Rolling Stone exclusively presents the new trailer for the film, which features a new original song by John:

“When I was very young, my life was all consumed by music,” John says in the trailer as archival footage. “I just wanted to become a songwriter.”

The documentary “follows Elton John as he looks back on his life and the astonishing early days of his 50-year career in this emotionally charged, intimate and uplifting full-circle journey,” Disney+ says in a synopsis.

“As he prepares for his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium, Elton takes us back in time to recount the extraordinary highs and heartbreaking lows of his early years and how he overcame adversity, abuse and addiction to become the icon he is today. The film will feature a new original song from Elton John.”

Never Too Late, named after John’s song from the 2019 soundtrack of the live-action The Lion King, is a companion of sorts to the concert film Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, which documented his final North American show and, with an Emmy win, also propelled John to EGOT status.

The new documentary, which will have a limited theatrical release on November 15, was directed by R.J. Cutler and John’s husband David Furnish.

I really thought he was deciding to continue this tour lol.

Looks like a good doc. Elton is endlessly fascinating. The story's been told a ton of times but never any less appealing. Musical genius and just ridiculously talented. It gets thrown around a lot, but definitely not a lot like him.

Long live Elton. Even though I wish he'd do some some concerts. Thanks for his contributions. A true legend.

Looks good.

So Elton's taken time this year to focus on something or someone besides his new obsession, Chappell Roan smiling bouncing smiley

He loves nurturing exceptionally talented, rising performer-songwriters, gay ones in particular. His aughties/2010s mentee Brandi Carlile may have plateaued and reached the widest popularity she's going to have. For Chappell OTOH, there are no limits in sight, and Elton gets almost giddy when he has her on a Rocket Hour. He's fun when a young artist catches his interest and his infectious enthusiasm for music has new reason to break out.
