Most of the people like Abba. Someone once said they created the perfect pop music nobody can really hate. Some of their stuff produced 30 years ago still sounds fresh and somehow timeless.
BTW "Downtown" is an awesome track (I LOVE the Petula Clark version as well as Marianne Faithfulls).
I have posted loads of crap on Tony Christie, "Daniel Boone" etc; such I call Turkey Music... I loved Tom Jones until the day he got hot again. Downloaded truck&truckloads of those things yesterday. Its like Christmas Eve now. Gotta have a laugh... The line between irony and sheer worship is too thin at times though.

I can :-). But I love Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds

Bianca,
I have the greatest hits and I listen to it all the time when I am alone.
There is a great seen in the movie "Tommy Boy" with Chris Farley and David Spade about this very subject and the Carpenters. If you havent seen it check it out.

One of the all-timers, Leonard! No secret about it. I'll also toss in Jewel Aikens' "Birds and the Bees."
Lately, been immersed in the catalogue reissues of Herb Alpert & the TJB - beautiful restorations - been listening to all 10 on a very regular basis lately. Hard to be sad when Herb's playing to you.....
Don't ever secretly like Glenn Miller. Do it openly.
Swing is foundational to Rock, like blues and (more broadly) jazz.
If anyone on this board can listen to Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall concert of 1938 and not be blown away, then I'll be surprised. Just listen to Sing, Sing, Sing, and tell me that place musta been ready to turn on its head.
Similarly, Miller changed the rules for his generation. What more can you ask?
Swing is the readheaded stepchild in the history of rock, and it deserves to be celebrated for its influence.

One of the all-timers - and an "audience" recording at that!

I'm a HUGE, HUGE Mike Nesmith fan. To this day, I always do a song of his when I do a gig. He was doing the country-rock hybrid in the mid-sixties before a lot of people jumped on that bandwagon. To be honest, I prefer his stuff to Parsons' (and I love Gram's music). Check out Nesmith's Nashville sessions from mid-'68 and his first 3 First National Band records. Great stuff. Saw him many years ago at the Palimino. Al Perkins was playing guitar. Great show.

From the Sounds of this board, "THE CARPENTERS" could kick off an oldies tour... Only question: who's gonna play Karen ?? Leann Rhimes or Kelly Clarkson or someone ???
How about goin' out on a limb and havin' Beyonce go on tour as Karen ??
Or maybe
Maybe Toni Braxton? Incredible singer but all that recent nip-and-tuck surgery hasn't done her any good... what a comeback it would be to sing Karen Carpenter.
Or maybe if we could get Whitney Houston... on some recent outings some have said she looks like a skeleton from lifestyle ... if she goes on a Karen Tour... it might quickly re-establish her on the scene !!
It would have to be an incredible talent that needs exposure...
Not sure if J-Lo would take the part... what about MARIAH CAREY!! Do any of these singers have anything to lose ?
It would be a risk for anyone, but what front-camera exposure !!
Just the same way that J-Lo supercharged her career by playing Selena, maybe one of these virtuosos would go on tour in the Karen Carpenter slot and just blow the arena roofs off !!

Holy Sheet. Somebody tell me this won't happen again.

That´s quite a bagage you´re carrying around... I would like to say that you are refering to what we in Sweden call "persienn-rock". That is, music you secretly like and have to pull down the curtain in order to fully enjoy. Pull down the curtain and let that air-guitar wail! Here are mine: "I go wild" - You know who "Out of tears" - dito "Another saturday night" - Bon Jovi "Here I go again" - Whitesnake
