Keith really isn't INTO "playin' solos"... he's the ultimate "team" guitarist. Sometimes he's the core rhythm, sometimes he's the high notes over the rhythm...
He's almost always the "edge" to the song... the danger, the extreme sounds, perhaps most importantly, he's the "punctuation" of the stones... the dot on the i, the cross on the t... and it's the punctuation that puts these songs "over the top"...
... there's a great wmv floating around here of a 72-ish gig with Keith & Mick Taylor on a guitar at a live venue... the thread was something like "where was this gig" ? A great example of Keiths contribution to the sound, IMO.
It's interesting that U2's guitarist is named "The Edge"... in every respect, Keith Richards is "The Edge"...
He's not a "soloist" in the sense of Eric Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughan or Jimi Hendrix, or Jimmy Page or countless other stupendous soloists...
But then again... THEY AREN'T KEITH RICHARDS EITHER !!!!!!
Here's the link that I think illustrates what Keith has been contributing to the Stones sound for going on 40 years... Go to the first message and hit the link for a great wmv:
