I think Stu is the most Beloved Stone because he the ONLY Stone that everybody has ONLY nice things to say about him.

Stu talks about Brian Jones and Mick Taylor from "The Rolling Stones Story" broadcast by the BBC in 1973.

It is interesting that if this programme really is from 1973 Stu mentions that the only candidates for the job in 1969 were Mick Taylor and Ronnie Wood... I have always thought that idea of him replacing Brian Jones being some sort of Ronnie fairytale, only to be told by him, but this confirms the case. Another funny anecdote is that, according to Stu, Jagger didn't even know who Mick Taylor was at the time (but seemingly John Mayall's recommendations made an impact on him).

Thanks Deltics for providing the link, and also the Scottish article from 2012. An interesting read. A nice, human one that 'Dylanistic' story of Jagger making the trip in 2003 to Stu's hometown to have a (half) pint there. We know the beautiful words by Keith, but also nice to notice how much the man meant to another Glimmer Twin as well. Losing him was a huge loss - I wonder what might been the new era if he had been still around? he probably was one of those very rare people who had balls to voice his opinion to Mick and Keith, and them probably even listening to him.

There's only a transcription of their message:

Frontman Jagger said: “The thing about him was that I don’t think the Rolling Stones would ever have got going if it hadn’t been for him. He was a great player. He was a great piano player. He was a great guy that got us all together.

Lead guitarist Richards said: “The Rolling Stones are only here because of Ian Stewart. Without him the Rolling Stones would have never existed. He hooked up with Brian Jones and then Mick and I sort of waltzed in and then suddenly it became the Rolling Stones. His love of music, his choice of the guys to play with was legendary. I still have so much affection for the man.”

Watts, the Stones’ drummer, said: “He didn’t like fussy music. He liked straight-ahead things. If he didn’t want to play something he wouldn’t play it. If he didn’t like how it went he wouldn’t play it. But what he liked and what he played was very unique and very admired by a lot of piano players.”

Wood, who joined the Stones as a guitarist in 1975, said: “He was always encouraging to me throughout my opening days with the Stones and all of the rehearsing I had to do and swotting up.”

Jagger added: “He always used to talk about how wonderful Scotland was, particularly east Scotland. “And one time I went up to see where he was born and it was the most beautiful place. I always hold that in my memory and I hold him very dearly in my memory.”
