OT: Genesis Platinum Collection

Just out this week. Three CDs spanning their entire career. Tracks presented in REVERSE chronological order with all the Peter Gabriel stuff relegated to the third CD.

What would you say to a reunion tour with all five original members? Maybe start the show with all the Phil Collins stuff and just bring Pete out for the final hour.

Better to put Phil back on drums and let Peter sing the entire show...Do nothing after 1976

Genesis? I'd rather listen to fingernails on a blackboard.

Finger nails on a blackboard? Dine at a Middle Eastern Resturant, the music will kill ya!

Forget that. Such a weird pairung; those two incranations of a band. I bought the Box Set "Genesis Archives 67-75". FOUR CDs with Gabriel. Live versions of the entire "Lamb", "Supper" "Watcher" etc. Incredible.
Anything after Gabriel is embarrassingly bad.

Yes, but how can you argue with lyrics as meaningful as these:

Because tonight, tonight, tonight
Oh!!!
I'm gonna make it right!
Tonight, tonight, tonight
Oh!!!

Oh well, it's not what you say, it's how you say it!

That's the platinum collection. It's been out for over a year, maybe two.
The Collins-years is guilty pleasure. I like to listen to those hits. And there's some really good stuff like That's all and Mama. You can't say what you want, but Collins could write hits.... and not one but dozens.
Not being a symphonic rock fan, I don't like the Gabriel years

And it wasn't as if Genesis was one kind of band when Gabriel led them and then became something COMPLETELY different the moment Collins took over. A Trick Of The Tale (1976), which many people consider their finest record, was the first one they made after Gabe left, and it's very similar to the records they made when Peter led the band. Genesis DID eventually become something far more commercial, far more "Pop", but it was a very gradual process. As late Duke (1980) they still sounded like they were trying to carry on in the spirit of the work they had done with Gabriel.

Duke was probably their last good record. The solo success of Phil Collins changed the music direction and turned them into an arena and stadium act. Their shows ended up being something like Phil Collins & Genesis and overtime developed into a better frontman. That's from my observations seeing them in many forms.

I see this argument hashed out all the time over at Progressive Ears. I can guess what kind of posts on a Rolling Stones board a Genesis topic will generate. Something like when Rolling Stones topice are posted on a Prog board.

In any case, this is probably a nice collection for those who just want the highlights of Genesis long career. I say just buy the original albums. You'll get a better feel for what the band was like in any given period.
