Non-LP B-Sides, 1974-now
Posted by: redrum ()

Hey.....saw the thread about the "extra" ABB CD, containing out of print b-sides, which that may or may not happen.
I for one, think its interesting to keep Non-album B-sides obscure....it's fun to collect them!

I can't name all the Non-Album B-sides from 60s, but from 1974 on here are main ones, minus all the dance mixes. I'm sure this is all documented somewhere, but its fun to try and remember them all. There is certainly an albums worth of stuff. Feel free to fill in any gaps:

Through The Lonley Nights (1974) (Interstingly, has never appeared on any US compilation to date! Was B-Side to IORR)

I Think I'm Going Mad (January 23, 1984. B-Side to under-rated She Was Hot)

Fancy Man Blues (Aug 1989) (One of my favorite tracks....can't figure out why its wasn't on "Steel Wheels"! Probably best song to come out of those sessions! It wouldn't be out of place on ABB!)

Cook Cook Blues (Oct 1989, B-side to Rock and a Hard Place. Apparently an "Undercover" ouutake?)

The B-Side to Terryfying was non-album. Can't recall title. Don't think it was ever released in US.

"LOSTPOINT" Non-album, live "Falshpoint" bonus tracks:
Undercover of the Night (think was B-side to "Sex Drive'?). Other non-album live cuts on CD-singles. I can't recall which titles.

The Storm (July 1994) Damn good blues track! Like "Fancy Man Blues", this one is very memorable and would stand out as an album cut, or A-side!

I'm Gonna Drive (1994)
Jump On Top of Me (1994) (Voodoo Lounge era B-sides--to Out of Tears?)

I Go Wild (live) (1995) Live bonus track, CD single to "I Go Wild" studio A-side)

From Bridges to Babylon onward, I can't recall any except Anyway You Look at It (correct title? Was B-side to sain't of Me, 1998)

Was 'Wish I'd Never Met You' the B-side to Terrifying? Or possibly to almost hear you sigh. I think it was the latter, as a maxi-single.

B-side to Going To a Go Go was Beast of Burden. Very special too, esp for the bass.

Also from the Voodoo singles, So Young, one of my favorite Stones songs.

The B-side live Beast of Burden is from Chicago 81 I believe. Excellent version.

A live version of Play With Fire was a b-side to something from Flashpoint.

B-Side of Pain it, Black. (live 1990 version)

And I got this CD-Single, bought it in Virgin Megastore, Champs Élysés Paris, back in December 1991...

Times flies...

Jees, there's a few there that I've never heard, I'll need to track them down! There's a whole album worth of material there.

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

another weird one ive never heard a track called 'Chris cross' which
according to a couple of books appears on the soundtrack to a japanese film
its a goats head soup outake.

@lofi poet

Criss cross man is indeed an outtake from Goats head soup. It's excellent. There are a few more outtakes from that album that are real good. Can anybody tell me which japanese film you refer to?
The gimme shelter is indeed on the b-side of wild horses. It was on another CD-single as well, can't remember which. It's good, but what's on the "Stripped companion" boot is even better.
As for the B-sides. I think Brown Sugar had one too. It's called "Let it rock" and it's on the spanish version of Sticky, coz Sister Morphine was forbidden during the Franco era.

I thought Gimme Shelter (live) was a B side to Saint of Me.

The Japanese film was called "Metamorphosis" - believe it or not;-) Criss Cross was at least one song they kept for the then unreleased 1974 live+studio LP (one side live 1973, one side studio recordings) - the rest is open for speculations

So the songlist of the official B-Sides
(non livetracks) goes like this:

Through The Lonley Nights (1974)
Everything Is Turning to Gold (1978)
I Think I'm Going Mad (1984)
Fancy Man Blues (1989)
Cook Cook Blues (1989)
Wish I'd Never Met You (1989)
The Storm (1994)
So Young (1994)
I'm Gonna Drive (1994)
Jump On Top of Me (1994)
Anyway You Look at It (1998)

Quite a nice B-Sides Album ...

Anything missing?

Great idea, that B sides album, if it happens. Trouble is, had they released the B Sides album instead of A Bigger Bang it would have been their best album since Tattoo You.

To make it more interesting I would add

Sway (alternate single-version, no remix) (1971)
All Down The Line (alternate - stereo - single-version, no remix) (1972)
Dance (instrumental, B-side of promo-maxi) (1981)

Add the live tracks as mentioned earlier:

Beast of Burden
Light Years (on 12" single of Highwire)
As Tears Go By
Gimme Shelter
Undercover

others?

ps very true Nikolai!

Hi all....THANKS ...wow, I forgot about a lot of those tracks!!

FYI--"Everything's Turned To Gold" went on "Suckin' in 70s" LP.

I won't even get into all the dance mixes of things! 2 GREAT ones were the long, dance versions of "Too Much Blood"!

I remember Micks "rap" about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the cut up body parts in the fridge! Jeezus! That whole album was bitchin'! I think its a classic, I don't care what others say! The Stones on that album could give any heavy metal-thrash band a run for their money!

"Undercover" LP was hard, hard rock, violence & anger, based on blues. Woody's solos (esp "Too Tough" were "fast and computerized" (he said so in an interview in '85).

I just wish the naked chick on the cover was more appealing!

I would add "If I Was A Dancer" and maybe MAYBE "Western Grip" and "Well Well".
Throw in a live version of "Sure the One You Need".

I dont think the naked chick was meant to be appealing - more like low rent sleazy pulp-porn from the 50s, which fits the sleazy, violent air of the album.
I made a joke list for the b-side collection a few weeks back (w/all 6 Teddy Riley 'Love Is Strongs', other multiple club mixes), but this would be my selection:
1 Undercover-long version('83) 6:22
2 Jump On Top Of Me ('95) 4:29
3 The Storm ('94) 2:48
4 So Young ('94) 3:24
5 I Go Wild ('95) 4:35
(interesting alternate mix by Scott Litt)
6 Live With Me ('96) 3:52
7 Gimmie Shelter ('96) 6:47
8 Think I'm Going Mad ('84)4:20
9 Honest I Do ('98) 3:58
10 All Down The Line ('95) 4:24
11 Black Limousine ('95) 3:29
12 I'm Gonna Drive ('94) 3:43
13 Sex Drive ('91) 5:04
(this version was replaced on Virgin's '95 remaster of Flashpoint!)
14 Cook Cook Blues ('89) 4:10
15 Don't Stop ('02) 4:00
(New Rock Mix)
16 Any Way You Look At It('98) 4:20
17 Feel On Baby (Dub) ('83) 6:27
TOTAL time 76:12 - and,
what's amazing is I left some fairly decent stuff out - "Fancy Man Blues" ('89), Wish I Never Met You ('90), I Go Wild (Live) ('95), 12-inch Too Much Blood ('84), promo mix Before They Make Me Run ('78), and several others not even counting the long club mixes & Flashpoint-era live non-lp singles - quite a bit more there than I expected! And how about 'Under the Radar'?? for a 'new' song?

btw, I don't know how many here got the 2cd limited edition of Flashpoint w "Collectables" as 2nd disc - a mish-mash of b-sides (the 3 SW era b-sides, Everything is Turning to Gold, again, but it is killer, live Beast from '82, etc), with dance type remixes of varying quality. It seemed to be thrown together w/out much consideration for flow - but I wonder how many of these were produced?

john r:

Love the list, but omitting "Fancyman Blues?" Absolutely superior harp playing from Jagger on that one--real evidence that the Stones are still the coolest guys alive.

Meanwhile...

"Collectibles" has a "Harlem Shuffle" 12" remix that blows me away--the sound of the Tele isolated...an alltime great Stones moment.

Finally, the "Wild Horses" single from "Stripped" includes a version of "Tumbling Dice" that spliced an a capella rehearsal with an onstage electric performance. Very unusual little gem.

PS:
Didn't understand what you meant about the remastered "Flashpoint." How was "Sex Drive" changed?

And Keith should get a number!

The Harder They Come, (on RS Records).

You're right about "Fancy Man" - it is a solid blues w/ great Jagger harp, & that Keith single could have been a Stones record (featuring Charlie & Ron & Stu as it does)...I agree HS is a very cool mix too. I used to have it on 12-inch w/ a "London mix" on one side & a "NY mix" on the other, but someone slipped it out the door when I wasn't looking! This b-side collection just has to be a double cd set!

I also have a Highwire CD single which has the full length version, 7" version as well as live versions of I Just Want To Make Love To You which I believe is from one of their Wembley shows and Play With Fire live.
As well, I have a Ruby Tuesday CD single that is from Flashpoint. It also has YCAGWYW from Flashpoint as well as Play With Fire live and Undercover live.
I bought both in an import record store in Vancouver back in 91. I believe both are from Holland.

Rev Robert, when Flashpoint was remastered for reissue by Virgin the new edition (around '95) had, to my surprise, a different version (or different mix-enough so that I noticed first time I played it) from the one on the '91 original. The Virgin version is around 20 seconds shorter than the '91 version as well. I know there were 3 mixes issued on the single, but as I don't have that anymore I'm not sure if it's one of those alternate versions. What's most odd is that Bob Ludwig (re)mastered both editions of the album, so a decision must have been made to change it.

Couple more that I remembered I have:

LARS CD single which also has live versions of Black Limousine and All Down The Line
Saint of Me CD single which also has Anyway You Look At It, Gimme Shelter live as well as 2 remixed versions of Saint of me, Deep Dish Club Mix and Todd Terry Extended Remix.
Both are Canadian releases.

Yes, how could I forget " I just want to MLTY" as a b-side to 12" Highwire!

They do it slow......Jagger introduces it as an old song something like.."When we were younger we used to do it fast, but now we are older we like to do it slower"!

He means the song, ofcourse!

Another one I forgot: Highwire Cassette single with 2000 Light Years From Home live on the flip side. Canadian release.
