NEVER before a UK album missed the #1 by less than 50 copies according to Music Week. The eleven copies is a record, I said it last Monday: let's buy 10 copies and return 9 the next week. It's late now.

Are there any albums released today who could make it #1 the next week or is there a chance that ABB can reach the top on second attempt?

Music Week:

Anybody Seen My 11 copies?
12 September 2005 - 16:29:33

Looking to register their 11th number one album, and extend their span of chart-toppers to more than 40 years, the Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang held a small but significant lead over James Blunt’s Back To Bedlam on the midweek sales flashes but Blunt eventually prevailed, with his album winning the race for chart honors by a mere 11 sales. The Stones’ album sold 43,466 copies, and Back To Bedlam 43,477. The Stones actually sold 825 copies more in Great Britain but Blunt trounce them 1,381 sales to 545 in Northern Ireland.
No Direction Home - The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 is the title of the ‘new’ Bob Dylan album, which ties in with Martin Scorcese’s documentary of the same name. Debuting at number 21 on sales of 11,859. it’s a double disc set, featuring 26 previously unreleased recordings, from the late fifties thru’ the mid-sixties. It is Dylan’s 47th Top 75 album, and the highest charting of the ‘bootleg’ series, from which it is actually the fifth release, as Volumes 1-3 were bundled together in 1991, and provided the series’ previous highest chart placing, at number 32.

Incredible, ABB lost the #1 due Northern Ireland sales. What the hell is this?

That means that if Gazza had bought 12 more copies of ABB, the Stones would have been #1 !!!!

Could you explain yourself, Gazza???? grinning smiley

Just read the article:

In Great Britain: Stones #1
Stones: 42,921
Blunt: 42,096

In North Ireland: Blunt #1
Blunt: 1,381
Stones: 545

Total: Blunt #1 by 11 copies
Blunt: 43,477
Stones: 43,466

No, I wanted to know how many copies Blunt sold on his first week after release 3 months ago...not last week's sales.

I don't know but he was #1 9 weeks so far, but it debuted low in the chart.
Here his chart run:
Entry: 26/03/2005 - 56-0-73-0-0-71-53-34-16-11-4-5-4-3-2-2-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-3-1 (27/16/9 wks)

He sold more than 1.3 million so far.

Who is this Mr. Blunt? Sorry, I'm in the US & never heard of him...a blunt out here is half tobacco & half grass.

lol, just add a #1 album to this combo and you have James Blunt.

Btw, georgelicks. I can't remember knowing an album which debuted so low and finally came on top. Isn't that very unusual? I mean if the Stones enter at #2 why shouldn't they be able to reach #1?

I have gone into the witness protection programme!

You're always going to get regional variations in any country where a record might sell well in one city, county or region more so than in other parts of the country. In the end, it evens itself out. That happens in the US as well and elsewhere.

as for the reason for James Blunt's gradual rise in the album charts. He had a single called "youre beautiful" which also (I think) took a while to be a huge success it was and then it eventually climbed to the top of the charts and stayed there for several weeks (its unusual for a record to climb to #1 in the singles charts and also to stay there for a few weeks). The sudden interest in his album after initially minimal success would be a knock on affect of that.

Is it true that Blunt bought those 11 copies HIMSELF, while he was in Ireland? smiling smiley

Many debuts album are slow chart topers, no way that ABB can reach the #1 the next week, it's #8 on Midweeks.

Pre-soundscan,in Billboard, rising to a peak was the norm ie IORR: # 78 - 19 - 3 - 1 - 2. Abbey Road # 178 - 4 - 1.
