Forgot that guy, Ry. He's No 1 for me too really. The soundtrack of Paris Texas is not earthly, Ry is a genius. Keith of course nicked his stuff from Ry. Niko, great too. Maybe even better than the rest.

- Well, that´s Ry´s version.
And Ry invented open G and slide...

Keith (more the man, history, contrabutions, ability to rock me)
David Lindley (hands down talent to the point it's hard to figure his thinking, just sit and be amazed)
David Bromberg (in his day, mixed with songwriting)
Jeff (skunk) Baxter (master technician)
Steve Goodman (RHS) (the best at the writing, playing, performing combo)
Dicky Betts (the only guy from the the day I could take a 20 minute guitar solo from, just flows, probably the best combination of rock guitars and rythem band ever)
Buddy Guy (raining master of the blues guitar)
Jimi (of course...but it's hard to listen to an album, just too much good stuff to digest)

Hi humanriff77. Slash, Clapton, Blackmore and all that other whitey shit???? Ouch!

Donkeygirl, you're the only other person that's listed Ace and EVH!

"whitey shit... ?" Blackmore? Clapton? Same universe?
The Blackmore I love (1970-72) sure aint no whitey guitarist.
I could imagine why Slash is mentioned there.
...DGA35, can you develop your thoughts?

Reading these lists, I was wondering what James Burton has been doing lately. And I wonder why nobody mentioned Duane Eddy.

Some of my favorites in no particular order:
-Steve Cropper
-George Harrison (RIP)
-Michael Landau
-Michael Ward (especially his work with John Hiatt)
-Robbie Robertson (unfortunately, he hasn't done much lately)
-The Edge (unfortunately, his guitar is lost way back in the mix of their current album)
-Ry Cooder
-Jerry Douglas (if you can count dobro as guitar)

I'm sure I could come up with more if I took some time.
Dave Edmunds is a guitarist as well, but I prefer his skills as a producer.

Duane Eddy - yeah, cool. But, the king of the surf guitar - Dick Dale - is still going strong, now in his 70's. He puts on a killer show - Hendrix-like at times. Amazing dude.

Various pics of Ile Kallio and Albert Järvinen (glasses, bigger hair)in the legendary Finnish group (still touring, but now only with drummer Remu Aaltonen) HURRIGANES... It wouldn´t be too wrong to say that the Leningrad Cowboys got much from Hurriganes. In the Scandinavian countries there are (for people aged 35-47 or slt.) common knowledge that Hurriganes rocked the most... People that like the Stones ought to like this a lot).

Pics from [netti.nic.fi] in English nota bene!
there are more pics, lyrics, a complete discography in English plus
Albert Järvinen's Guitars and Amps...

and furthermore from the excellent site [hem.bredband.net]
- - - The tough guy eith the tattooed arms are Remu, drummer. ---
Cisse Häkkinen is the bassist; he is dead, as well as Järvinen. - - -

More, useful link(s): Albert Järvinen - in English, a musician-technichal site
[www.music.helsinki.fi]
(by Vili Pesonen, Helsinki University; note the Berry-ish riff while entering the site)
Hurriganes today: [www.hurriganes.fi] Only in Finnish or Swedish
(may explain why they never did hit internationally... )

Hi Baboon Bro, I was just commenting on the humanriff77's comment of whitey shit. I don't think of Clapton/Blackmore or even Slash as "Whitey shit". What would actually categorize someone as "whitey shit"?

I'm waiting for someone to mention Yngwie Malmsteen, the Swedish guitar hero.
He's a technical genius, but unfortunately he's stuck in the 1980's and will hardly make any dramatic changes in that sense.

Cool band! There are many treasures in Finland.

Besides Keith and Mick Taylor,

David Gilmour - Pink Floyd
Robby Krieger - The Doors
Elliott Easton - The Cars

I think Krieger and Easton are two of the most underrated guitar players in rock.

Gilmour is a genius.

Elliott Easton is now with Creedence Clearwater Revisited... the guy plays so well with seemingly so little effort... the sound just flows, his best work is on the extended solo on Heard It Through the Grapevine, truly one of the better guitar solos anywhere.

I suppose Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan are 2 other worthless white guitarists...

As for Clapton, perhaps you could name the numerous non-white guitarists who have a more impressive guitar track than "Let it Rain" ?

I could never finish answering this question.
But I gotta say, without trying to repeat what others have already said . . .
Otis Rush makes my hair stand up when he's playing.
Django is a wonder of the world. (makes me ask: anyone listen to Rosenberg Trio live at Northsea Jazz Festival?)
Segovia cannot be overlooked
Robert Johnson's playing makes me laugh, he put it all together so well
Marc Bolan got a few things right
Joe Strummer reinvented some things
Bob Marley is wonderful, but that may be more about writing than playing, I don't know enough to say. But wonderful guitar on Marley's records, and when I saw him live he held his own.
Charlie Christian derserves a nod, he certainly helped bring electric guitar into relief.
And yeah, Jimi, Jimmy, and SVR.

Keith of course.

This list is endless.
