Let It Bleed - What Is The Rattle?
Posted by: GasLightStreet ()
Date: March 14, 2017 16:16

The first one is at 20 seconds. Another one at 35 seconds. And then here and there after.

Any clue as to what it is?

Keith's slide?

I dunno. He's not playing slide in those parts. You think he's just clanking it for a percussive effect?

Yes I can hear both noises. Just sounds like unwanted studio sounds bleeding into the mics.

You learn something new every day. I've NEVER heard those noises before.

I think it's a slide on the frets, but it always reminded me of a roulette wheel.

It sounds like there is some prepared piano, not quite dead center but slightly off to the left with plenty of Echo. It starts just after the main piano part. It lasts until about 1 minute of the song, then there's another verse, then the slide kicks in.

Prepared Piano, for those who don't know is where you put things on or between the strings inside the piano to get strange sounds. Plucking the strings with coins or something similar, for example.

Discussed here and here -- and possibly other times. It's always been one of my very favorite colorations/aspects of "Gimme Shelter."

But that's a different song - which one did the OP refer to, I am confused?

Oh, snap. sad smiley

I can't see any of the fricking videos posted, at all, anymore. Even if I am the poster.

So if the OP posted a video of the song, I could not see it.

I--sounds like wrongly--understood him to mean the album Let It Bleed, and presumed he or she meant GS.

Aaargh. Thanks for pointing it out, Koen.

I'm still convinced that the sounds are from Keith's slide. It was the first thing I thought when I heard it the first time. Still is smiling smiley

aha, the high sounds dont know what they are. Maybe reversed echoes from the piano track. Or from the slide. Sounds like they're added later by Miller I think.

He's re-attaching the headstock to the neck of the guitar because it keeps falling off whenever he's attempting to record a new hit song.

I agree.

Re: Let It Bleed - What Is The Rattle?

I think it just noise from someone doing an overdub. Not sure about Keith's slide because he is doing electric slide, except for that very beginning, and that sounds like it gets edited, as in tape cut; so he is miked elsewhere - not right by him and guitar.
As stingy as they had to be with their tracks back then, I can't see a whole rack be wasted by someone sitting and waiting for a small cue, so I can see it being from Jagger's vocal track. The 35 sec. noise sounds almost like a tea cup.

This all reminds me that mysterious 'trombone' on the Live 'Carol' from Ya-Ya's.

Maybe it's an overlooked Brian contribution.

thumbs up I think it's audible through out the song actually. More or less. Almost Maureen "VU" Tucker style. At least audible at times.

Never heard the two rattles before, and now I hear them. Poltergeists in the grooves.

There is also a thump you can hear in sweet Virginia at about the 2 1/2 sec mark.

I really don't hear any special sound at 0:20 nor 0:35 but still, I like your post because it made me listen various times to the best intro ever with the volume on maximum.
