Because of the Stones relation and maybe the name "Grateful Dead" I bought Workingman's Dead and Wake of the Flood back in the early 70's great records.......but never bought any other records.............saw a lot live jamming on YouTube but for me they sound a bit the same.......
What is considered as the best GD record ?

I have nothing but respect for the fan base they cultivated. I saw a documentary on Netflix about Bob Weir that was okay. But to these ears they are the worst of the worst. Rolling Stones always does these lists. If they did 500 best rock bands of all time, the GD would be 500th. They are definitely the worst cover band of all time. There's no balls to their blues. Listen to their version of Little Red Rooster. Harmonies stink. The lyrics to their songs are sophomoric. If I just dropped a tab of Orang Sunshine and somebody put on the Dead, I'd yell at them to stop f-ing up my trip! I hate licorice too.[/quote
you must be high already to think the lyrics to the songs are sophomoric. robert hunter is one of the greatest rock lyricists along with bernie taupin
Ripple
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air
Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men
There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone
Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow
You who choose to lead must follow
Dire Wolf
In the timbers to Fennario, the wolves are running round
The winter was so hard and cold, froze ten feet 'neath the ground
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me
Please, don't murder me
I sat down to my supper, 'twas a bottle of red whisky
I said my prayers and went to bed, that's the last they saw of me
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me
Please, don't murder me
When I awoke, the Dire Wolf, six hundred pounds of sin
Was grinning at my window, all I said was come on in
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me
Please, don't murder me
The Wolf came in, I got my cards, we sat down for a game
I cut my deck to the Queen of Spades, but the cards were all the same
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me
Please, don't murder me
Don't murder me
In the backwash of Fennario, the black and bloody mire
The Dire Wolf collects his dues, while the boys sing 'round the fire
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me
Please, don't murder me
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please, don't murder me
No no no don't murder me
I beg of you, don't murder me
Please, don't murder me
Please, don't murder me
thats just 2 examples.

Don't hate them. Just find them boring. Their music just doesn't do anything to move or inspire me.

Yes,the harmonies live weren't great......who here has shuddered at an out of tune Donna scream, but in the studio they were great.......check out Uncle John's Band and Box Of Rain for example.

Garcia said it best... “We're like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.”
Personally, I'm a fan, and am really grateful for the 40 times or so I got to see them live, but I know a lot of people whose musical judgement I (otherwise) consider to be very on-spot, who can't stand them. I accept and respect their opinion.
Forget everything you have heard and wipe the slate clean because it's all about Jerry Garcia's GUITAR . Garcia is the Stradivarius ,Garcia is the Luciano Pavorati, Garcia is the Yo Yo Ma ,Garcia is the Master blaster of the fretboard .Just listen to his guitar ,it's that easy to doQuote

For me studiowise it would be American Beauty followed by Blues for Allah. The Rhino reissues with bonus material. Blues for Allah is mellower/bouncier.
