can someone please tell me, who is doing the "oooooooooooo...ooooooooooooooooooo...oooooooooooooooooo...oooooooooooooooooo" in the opening minute of 'gimme shelter' (the studio version). it sends chills up and down my spine every time.

is it merry clayton, or is it mick himself?

IMO I think that it's Merry Clayton but I could be wrong.

I think it might be Mick........ there are versions out there on boots that don't feature Merry Clayton's famous part after the solo, but the ooooo's in the intro are intact. Think these versions date from Olympic Studio sessions Feb/March '69, but Merry Clayton's vocals weren't overdubbed until Oct 1969 at Sunset Sound, LA

Hey Drew:

Can't be sure, of course, but I'm guessing Mick. Those intro vocals are in place on a boot version that has Keith singing the lead...

Also: re-read your post from awhile back praising "Emotional Rescue." Very cool stance, and I love "ER" deeply--but not at the expense of "Exile!" Plus, "Where The Boys All Go" is the one track on that record that I simply cannot accept.

Meanwhile, the Phillies (and the Braves and the Marlins) are killing me...

Merry Clayhton did her overdub when the tune was practically finished. Have even heard the tune with Keith still singing and the intro intact. I think she might have added her vox on top of Jagger's already there.

hey rev--

i can take no responsibility for the phils. they are on their own now. i caught a couple of games this summer and that's it.

glad to hear you love ER deeply, as do i. it's not everyone's cup of tea, ya know. EOMS certainly has some phenomenally incredible tracks -- happy, JWTSHF, LC, SV, and SS spring to mind -- but it is too inconsistent for me overall! maybe the fact that i was 5 years old when it was released has something to do with my inability to place it among my favs...

say, where can i find that boot of keith doing GS?

It is actually Brian Jones it is documented as his last known voice recording with the Boys.

Drew:

Mine's called "The Satanic Sessions" and covers "Beggar's/Let It Bleed" outtakes and alternates.

It's got the white-hot "Keith's B-Day" version of "Brown Sugar" with Clapton on slide as well as "@#$%& Blues" and "Still A Fool."

I'm pretty techno-challenged--don't even have a burner, so not so much help.

My source is a place in lower Manahttan, but I haven't seen it there in awhile...

Also: For fun, there is a CD single of the Keith tune "Eileen" from "Main Offender." The b-side is a smokin' live version of "Gimme Shelter" by Keith and the Winos.

Currently paralyzed by fear wondering what the Braves are doing my beloved Metropolitans.
