As powerful as the single was and is in my life It's somehow never been a live highlight for me; tho I love the hysteria of the earlier live versions when everything's a mess & they're just charging through it.

Agree. It's a special song, but when I listen to live albums, Satisfaction is seldom very engaging, in my opinion.

The '69 version is probably my favourite of the live renditions. It's a little dragged out, but I think they get a fantastic groove there that they never achieved in '71, 72 or any later era. Mick Taylor shines on the '69 version.

What do you think of the 1966-version I posted, LieB?

The live version in the 1966 alternate ABKCO thread: [iorr.org]

Which has now gone!

I know... Some might still have it, though...

I saved them before they were removed, but I only got 25 tracks. I read in that thread there were 30 tracks ... so either:

a) 30-count was incorrect
b) I simply missed 5
c) 5 were removed before I saved them

There were thirty although two were the same and eleven were unlistenable to.

There were 29, I believe? I recorded them all.

1969. The version in GIMME SHELTER and on the GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! box set is incredible. The way Keith played was awesome - it took what could be perceived as The Beatles' Day Tripper lick (which was then used for Dancing With Mr D) and made it into a chugging rocking tune that kicks as opposed to how it just sludges like the studio version.

The 1981-82 version of it is hilarious. Since 1989 it's a huge yawn just like SFTD and Jumpin' Jack Flash.

I'd say the openings during the Babylon are the best versions since it's more sneaky and more slick, 2 telecasters trading licks and a dirty, "Otis/Muddy/Jimmy" delivery, rather than the "hit 'em hard" approach post-2012. It works real well as an opening song IMHO.

You're a rag trade girl, You're the queen of porn, You're the easiest lay on the white house lawn!!

Maybe not a popular vote, and I was there, (although overall it really was not one of my favorite shows), but every time I listen to the HyDE Park Sweet Summer Sun version I say man, that's the greatest version of the greatest song ever.

I Do love the '69 version from the Gimme Shelter film though (not the one that wound up on the 'new' Ya Ya's) - with the I Can't Get Me No, and the whole 'I need a good woman...'

Its one of those songs they just can't perform well live. Add that to Street Fighting Man, Jumping Jack Flash, Brown Sugar, and others.

But here is one that they did ok with.

With exception to one tour (STEEL WHEELS/URBAN JUNGLE) they've always done great versions of Street Fighting Man and for the most part (other than it going on for 3 hours on some tours) Brown Sugar.

Jumpin' Jack Flash they haven't done worth a damn since 1969-1971.

If you think any of those live versions are even in the same league as the Record versions i don't know what to tell you.

They go from tight masterpiece to sloppy butchering.

Street Fighting Man on GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! is exceptional and better than the album version. They also did an outstanding version of it on the LICKS tour. And the one on STRIPPED is killer.

Jumpin' Jack Flash from 1969-1971 is better than the studio version.

So don't worry about not knowing what to tell me.

I guess we will agree to disagree. If you like sloppy songs that sound basically no different then any other song they play live then I get it. Love the sloppy unlistenable vocals also.

I prefer tight masterpieces.

I will not agree to disagree. What's astounding is your inability to hear how what I mentioned is or are better than the studio versions - just like Honky Tonk Women from LOVE YOU LIVE blows away the studio version.

There's nothing sloppy about them and they do not sound "no different than any other song they play live". Why you can't understand that is your loss.

My favorite is the 1976 Knebworth version. Love the extended opening riffs and it's ragged raw nature

I particularly like the 71/72 versions. The rhythm is just slightly different and I really enjoyed it.

Not the best-played version, but the best crowd response has to be Cuba in the Ole! Doc. I saw it in the theatre and the already incredibly loud and enthusiastic crowd somehow took it to another level when Keith started the riff.

josh.

For me the live version from 69 on the deluxe Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. The DVD performance is just incredible! I love cranking that out!

Yep, both MSG 69 versions caught by the Maysles were smoking hot. My faves too! Timeless stuff.

I don't know, Mick Taylor's acoustic guitar on the 50 and counting tour blew me away. It was incredible! I was in awe!

Its Madison square garden 1969 for me. fabulous groove.... And the Stones make it look so easy!

1969 was in a class all it's own. They never attempted it like that again. For more modern version, I thought it was very good on the Steel Wheels / Urban Jungle shows. After that, it's often been lacking that certain bite that it needs. The Havana Moon version has more life to it than the Hyde Park Live version.

Nope.

You're not able to hear the quality of those performances. You're using Classic Rock radio ears.

Ya cant get no satisfaction trying to debate which Satisfaction is the best Satisfaction

But one things is for sure...
those opening riffs of Satisfaction always get my cerebral cortex superrevvy

I member back in 1998 when they had that oval screen... and the show started with all those weird noises playing.... and then the splosions.... and then Keef came charginf out wearing that coat and glasses playing the opening lick of Satisfaction....yeah, that was awesome

Philadelphia 78 is "nice". Only tour version in the middle of the set.

I was at that show. I want to say they did this one as an encore. But it has been a long time, and I was cloudy by then anyway.

RedHot, actually I think "Satisfaction" has remained pretty top level. That song for some reason has not become a yawn IMO.
I really like the "soul" version they do. In '70 especially (Leeds e.g.) they start it with Charlie tapping that insistent on-beat. It HAS to be that they heard Otis' version, and knew that he had found it.
