Which songs should be removed from ABB ?
Posted by: nmaillot ()
Date: September 4, 2005 15:55

It seems that everybody agrees to say that 3 or four songs should be removed
from ABB to obtain one of their best album ever.

I could would prefer ABB without:

-Streets of Love
-Sweet NeoCon
-Let Me Slow Down
-Rain Fall Down

What songs would you remove ?

i have already burnt my own copy of ABB without

Let Me Down Slow
Rain Fell Down

I kept Dangerous Beauty just because i think good albums needs fillers...

But I am having second thoughts on Rain Fell Down

Best tracks
Laugh I Nearly Died
She Saw Me Coming
Look What The Cat Dragged In

Worst track
Biggest Mistake

It's been a long time 16 tracks after 8 years ain't too much.

We can all make our own edited versions.

I made up a VL / BtB compilation, which included Highwire a couple of years ago and it's been well played.

None.

I think theres a couple of songs that by comparison are below par (especially "Sweet Neo Con") but I dont think theres anything thats simply unreleasable in the way that was the case on VL (Suck On the Jugular) and Dirty Work (about a third of the album)

For all the flaws that youre going to get on a 16-track album from anyone, I'll take it as it is, warts and all.

I removed:

Streets Of Love
Biggest Mistake
Let Me Down Slow
Infamy
Driving Too Fast

Also switched the order of the remaining tracks so my edited version looks like this:

1. Rough Justice
2. Back Of My Hand
3. It Won't Take Long
4. Rain Fell Down
5. Oh No, Not You Again
6. Laugh, I Nearly Died
7. Look What The Cat Dragged In
8. She Saw Me Coming
9. Sweet Neo Con
10. Dangerous Beauty
11. This Place Is Empty

Favorite songs: RJ, BOMH, IWTL, LWTCDI

I love this version and have been blasting it for days. Best album since Some Girls, IMO. I think its funny that while most fans can agree ABB should have been shorter, they can't agree which songs to leave out. Maybe that's why the Stones put all 16 songs on there, because they know tastes differ and we can all burn our own versions anyway.

-Dangerous Beauty
-Driving Too Fast
-Sweet Neo Con (which should have been called Neocon anyway)
-Let Me Down Slow

I hate to say Streets of Love probably has its function.

Although Biigest Mistake serves this function better. Don't you think it rather sounds like a Counting Crow-like intermezzo in a Hugh Grant movie? You know, wenn 'they' got separated and contemplate their fate in solitude? winking smiley

do any of you like the outro guitar extended solo on Let Me Down Slow - A song
finally that ends with a outro solo. Its not compilcated but I love that TONE.
and jagger trying to stay close to the melody with the scant as the solo begins.

I like "Let me down slow", one of my favourite.
Today i'll remove Rain fell down for sure but tomorrow?
I mean, songs are goin' up and down.
Back to zero was my best song on Dirty work at the begining, now i never listen to it.I don't listen to the record by the way.
There are very few songs i always remove but "Wanna see his face" is one of these

I'm not hooked at She saw me coming.
The groove is excellent during 30 seconds then nothing happens, the same musical sentence during 3'14.
You must explain to me what's good in that song.

As un-english, i never listen to the lyrics, i read them later to have an idea of the meaning but i guess the listening is different if you try to understand the words.

Who remembers the good old days of vinyl when you listened to an album from beginning to end, as the artist intended. This album isn't even officially released and people are messing with it. It isn't the greatest Stones album ever - the lyrics are a little cheesy in places, and I think the arrangements could have been a bit better - Bill's bass and Ian Stewart or Nicky Hopkins on a "real" piano could have really improved the sound, but those guys aren't around any more so what can you do.

But man is it ever a good "album" or "sequence of songs". It hangs together as an album IMO better than anything since the glory days of the 70's - maybe even as far back as Exile. Let's not forget that a lot of the individual songs on Exile are not stand out classics - it's the feel of the whole album that makes Exile the best record ever made, bar none (except maybe LIB, SF, BB - depending on what day of the week it is!!). Has anyone made their own copy of Exile without Casino Boogie and I Just Want To See His Face and put Happy after Turd on the Run?

So let's go out on Tuesday and listen to this thing from top to bottom on a CD (or record) player - not through crappy mp3 players - and then decide where it stands in the library of the greatest rock and roll band that has ever or will ever be.

And let's hope there's lots more where it came from.

I'd keep them all and add a few more if they had any outtakes!!!!!!!

We really want all we can get, why else are our shelves filled with outtakes and alternates?????????

Albums today are being released with too many songs. Just look at RHCP's "Californication"... if they removed about 3 or 4 tracks from that album it would have been the next coming of Sticky Fingers. But they had to throw 3 or 4 extraneous numbers on it and really detracts.

As for ABB, it's certainly not a Californication-level album, but it does have some very worthy tracks. It's amazing the different opinions on this... here's mine:

Can EASILY be removed:

She Saw Me Coming... I mean what is this drivel??
Look What the Cat Dragged In... should drag THIS out
This Place is Empty... this song is pretty empty too
Driving Too Fast... just not enough here
Dangerous Beauty... ho-hum.

The Tracks that MAKE this album:

It Won't Take Long... love the intro & lyrics
Rain Fall Down... has a nice "Miss You" quality to it
Biggest Mistake... love the lyrics, has a Springsteen quality, I think will grow on people over time
Laugh I Nearly Died... haunting intro, Sister Morphine quality
Oh No Not You Again... fun, big sound, possibly great live song

The above 5 are the really unique songs. Then we have the following nice "filler" material:

Rough Justice
Let Me Down Slow
Streets of Love
Back of My Hand

And a couple "c" sides:

Infamy
Sweet Neo-Con... above average for timeliness though the music is uninspired

So far in the "voting" Rain Fall Down has 4 votes for removal... I don't get this at all, I think it's one of the best tracks on the album.

Then there's 3 votes for Look What the Cat Dragged In as "best song"... this is cutting-floor material IMO.

SO, we can see a wide range of likes and dislikes, but nobody said the album is junk... it is a pretty good product !

I remember many people on this site nearly crying, that a phantom called "Under The Radar" is not included, as the official track list has been announced.

Now you're all editing your CDs?

I wonder what you all had done back in 1972 - and which Exile tracks would have made their way on your cassettes then...

I'll NEVER understand you guys!!!

Truth is stranger than fiction

Again, shows difference in taste... I would have removed about HALF of Exile, and then you would have a classic album. As it is there's some great songs but so many bullshit pieces that noway can it be in the same league as Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, or Get your Ya Ya's Out which IMO are the 3 "perfect" stones albums.

If you are watching:

there are no songs that everyone agrees to leave off.
Every post wants other songs to be removed.
So thats the best sign for the outstanding quality of this record: 16 great songs, and (perhaps besides Streets of love) no track, that all hardcore stones fans want to get rid of.

Actually there's not one song I skip, except Streets of love.

The entire album is perfect, except for Look What The Cat Dragged In

Let me down slow is the best track for me right now. A lot more seems really good, and some are a bit so and so.... But I think the songs will grow on me, like Exile did in 72. Remember people, that Exile got really poor reviews at the time of release, and now it's rated the best ever! And aslo people seems quite eager to underrate albums like Voodoo Lounge an bridges to Babylon. Incredible! Both albums got tons of great songs on them, whish by the way did very well on their respective tours.

Give ABB some time, and it will go into history as all the rest of the Stones records - a living proof of a band live and well!

Hey fellas,
What's the guy that put DRIVING TOO FAST?
Are you drunk?
This is a great song!

In the good ole vinyl days the new album would have looked like this:

A 01 Rough justice
A 02 Oh no, not you again
A 03 Dangerous beauty
A 04 Look what the cat dragged in
A 05 Driving too fast

B 01 Streets of love
B 02 Biggest mistake
B 03 Laugh, I nearly died
B 04 Back of my hand
B 05 This place is empty

Pure fun = No fu@kin' fillers = Kickass R&R = 12 weeks at #1

PS.
"It won't be long" and "Rain fall down" would appear on B-sides or on charity records. (in fact "It won't be long" would appear on Keith's next solo single while "Rain fall down" would be on Mick's...)
"Let me down slow", "She saw me coming" and "Infamy" would have been given to the bootleggers like in the old days.
"Sweet Neo Con" would be the hidden bonus track on CDs sold in the US states that voted Bush for president.

BOMH doesn't match the album IMHO!

Rain Fall Down one of the best of this album. Good beat.

Does You Gotta Move match the rest of Sticky Fingers? As much as BOMH matches the rest of ABB. And it's a keeper!!!!
