Are the Stones a Rock n Roll band or a rock band?
Posted by: PhillyFAN ()

I was reading a thread asking if The Faces were the 2nd best rock n roll band. It made me wonder how folks define rock n roll from rock music? Is there a difference and how could the labels be defined. I always thought of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee as classic rock n roll and of course the Stones. What do others think?

Bob Dylan claims they've been a funk band since VOODOO LOUNGE. As for me, I like to think of them strictly as a rock 'n' roll band, but then HMS reminds me of DIRTY WORK and I think, no, they were a rock band, too.

Agreed that "Had It With You" is rock 'n' roll and one of their finest studio efforts post-TATTOO YOU. That said, "Fight" is pure hard rock and the copycat guitar break from "Too Tough" won't change that fact nor will it make up for the dreadful lyrics, earsplitting vocals, and horrible drum mix. Whenever I play "Fight" or "Hold Back," I realize Roy Thomas Baker didn't do so bad with GIMME SOME NECK after all.

The Stones are currently a Tribute Band that stars in a touring stage production which presents the golden era hits of The Rolling Stones.

I reckon they are a rock and roll band . To me a rock and roll band plays lots of 12 bar songs ( the stones do !), lots of tinkling piano or sqwauking sax and horns , ( the stones do ! ) tasteful guitar solos (the stones do !) as opposed to a rock band that typically has screaming vocals ( the stones don't !), or very overdriven guitars ( the stones generally play cleaner) and squawking fast not so melodic guitar solos . Although Ron can really sqwauk somtimes

I agree on Fight (good call with TT), but somehow the bass makes it R&B or Rock'n'Roll, imo. That and Keith’s fantastic solo.

It must be added that the drums on Fight sound nothing like those on Hold Back, though.

They're just the Rolling Stones.

They just absorb and assimilate genres to produce more, instantly recognisable, "Rolling Stones music"

Rock and Roll. I consider bands like Zeppelin and Deep Purple to be Rock Bands, as great as they are.

That was just an oportunistic statement, as the clubs didn't like rock'n'roll bands at the time. hence they had to bill themselves as r&b winking smiley

Rocky, I;m trying to understand what you just said re. the "Too Tough" break.

@Palace Revolution 2000, the guitar break in "Too Tough" (not Ronnie's sub-Van Halen solo) is repeated note for note in the guitar break on "Fight." If you don't recall it, just take my word for it. I wouldn't want to be responsible for you revisiting "Fight."

@Dandy, oddly enough I love the ending of "Hold Back" with the interplay between guitars and Ivan's bass playing. My problem with the track is everything before the truncated jam. I once asked Chris Jagger on FB if he was responsible for the dreadful "And George grasped the nettle" lyric. Unsurprisingly, our conversation ended there. I would have been insulted or embarrassed too if I was blamed for or responsible for that one.

LOL, Rocky. No wonder it ended there grinning smiley

I like the funky ending in Hold Back as well, but my point was that Charlie and Bill's playing on Fight is more of a rock'n'roll approach.

They've dipped into just about every genre aside from thrash, death and black metal.

At the end of the day, they're a rock'n'roll band.

Rock 'n roll is mid 20th century artists, who had popularity peak in the mid/late 1950s, like the ones you mention. There's a wide range of styles and influences so I wouldn't say there is a conclusive "rock n roll sound". Rock n roll evolved into rock by the early/mid 60s. The Stones and The Faces are not rock n roll bands although they're deeply influenced by those bands.

PhillyFAN, the opener of this threat:

I'm shorter by age of 70 than 60.
In the sixties we did not ask ourselves....?
""Is this a "Rock Band" or a "Rock 'n' Roll Band""
I not did ask myself that, and I think a lot of people was also.
The Stones has managed over the years to play every style in music.
This is: THE ROLLING STONES
