BIGGER BANG FILLER SURVEY

Ok, gonna be controversial here, what songs do you all think are filler on BB?
I reckon:

1. Let Me Down Slow?
2. It Won't Take Long
3. She Saw Me Coming
4. Driving Too Fast

Despite the filler, I'd say it is probably their strongest album since Some Girls and the cover artwork is ace too.

It Won't Take Long might well be the best thing on the album (aside from LIND)...

The songs I mentioned are not dire by most band's standards, I just think that they are pedestrian by Stones standards, a bit like Stones songs by numbers.

For me the fillers are:

Rain Fall Down
She Saw Me Coming
Dangerous Beauty
Sweet Neo-Con
Look What The Cat Drugged In
Infamy

All others are great!! Maybe some of the fillers will grow on me, but for now this is my choice.

ain't it just amazin' how varied opinions are on this album? one fan's best song is another's worst. i can't believe i'm the only one right about this :-)

I have the biggest problem with Look what The Cat Dragged in, because the opening riff sounds like a german serial for children, called "Sesamstraße" (sesame street). I almost laughed my ass off when I first listened to LWTCDI.

If you are curious search for "der die das" or "Sesamstraße" on eMule. You will see the similarity. ;-)

It is fascinating to read. I don't see how you put
RJ on the list of filler, but there we are. I'd like
to see an explanation with each song people put on this
filler list.

For me, "It Won't take Long" is filler. It plods, imo,
the licks are familiar. Love is Strong meets Brown Sugar,
without the fire. The theme is familiar. It's
got an OK groove, but I don't hear what the fuss is about.

I've heard the solo mentioned. It's rock n'bluesy but bland.

"Let Me Down Slow". I love it when they do country rock, but
this is some evil twin. It's a good production all the way
around, but I guess the certain something missing is that
the song never decides whether it's country or rock or pop.
Catchy don't make it great.

"Rain Fell Down". Not fun. I appreciate Mick's ability to
paint a picture with his lyrics, nice job, but the whole thing
sounds sterile to me.

"Sweet Neocon"- I understand Mick's reasons for wanting to
keep it on the album. He needed to make a statement. I am
politically liberal, but this song is nothing but badly rhymed
left-wing talking points. The first verse isn't really that
bad, the "hypocrite, crock of shit" bit. Unless you're willing to
finish it up with nasty, vitriolic lyrics. Once you start finding
ryhmes for Halliburton, you're on a slippery slope.

I'd like to put "Infamy" on there too, but I can't. Some
have noticed that it sounds like a "Main Offender" outtake.
Maybe it does, but that's a groovy little one-lick song.

As for RJ, you should get some alone time, have a beer and
crank that thing. It's not lyrical or musical genius, but I
see why they chose it to be a single. The rocking, swinging
energy reminds me of the first time I heard "All Down the Line".
Needless to say, I was dancing. This one has that same reckless,
simple, ballsy confidence. It's rough justice on 'ya!!!

toko - I get your points.

what's wrong with RJ? I've mentioned it many times before - but I really don't find anything RIGHT with it. Dull as dishwater. It rocks and that's about all I can say good about it. ADTL clone? Not for me. the song just doesn't start anywhere and doesn't go anywhere. I'm tired of it within 30 seconds. The Stones have plumb run out of ideas with these rote rockers. I think they are much better served working other territory - which they do well on the album.

It's a good album you know, but I don't think it beats either Some Girls or Tatoo You. The album just isn't consistent enough to equal those IMO. I don't know why I think those albums are more consistent..because I tend to skip songs of those too, but I don't think there are many fillers on them (Lies probably). The Stones still had a unique touch in those days.. a bit mystical. They still have the touch, but the album is to0 predictable (it's good nevertheless).

It would be intresting to pick the five best songs of VL and Bridges and compare them to the five best of ABB (although this would be rather personall)

It won't Take Long a filler? It's one of the three best cuts on the album! Sweet Neocon and Streets of Love are just really bad, Oh No Not You Again is a true filler, She Saw Me Coming is realy growing on me, as is Biggest Mistake. Dangerous Beauty sounds like 1983 to me, which is good news. I love the Undercover/Too Much Blood raunch of Look What the Cat Dragged In, and Infamy is a genuine filler.

Not an ADTL clone. For me, the initial rocking and
then buildup of ADLT gave me happy chills. RJ did
the same thing. It does have a generic beginning and
generic central riff, but once the first two verses are done,
it's all buildup and badass climax. To each his own,
I guess.

Everyone here likes different songs. It is a good thing they didn't cut the album as I am sure some really good songs would never be heard. If you want an album better than SG's or whatever, go edit one. Personally SG's has lots of fillers and it only has 10 cuts. The Stones have never been about producing the greatest album of all time. They just create and put it out there for us. If they were about putting out the greatest ever they would have released SF and LIB as one double album. They were both recorded the same year ( or close to it) from memory. That would be the best LP ever!

With every new release there are songs that take me straight away and there are songs that need to grow on me.

Songs that I consider to be fillers at first turn out to be ones that I really appreciate at another point in time. It also depends on the state of mind that I'm in when listening.

And as for Back of my Hand. Although might say it's simple I just can't get enough of the stones playing the blues. I just love slide and harp.

In general I do appreciate the way they gave the guitars a more prominent role on this album.

I´m with Rutger on IWBL.
COnsidering that a filler, you´re hardly a rock ´n roll connoisseur.
I´m also with Promoman on slide & harp.
DTF is close to a filler in my ears though. I may change my mind.
Dont think they would use fillers after decidin recording such a contentful album!

Streets Of Love
Sweet Neo-Con

The rest I really like.

if filler is a song that I personaly don't care, well, then
Infamy
Driving Too Fast
Dangerous Beauty

though they are not bad at all, but I find them a little bit boring.

I could live without Infamy, Sweet Neocon & Streets of love.

<sounds like a german serial for children, called "Sesamstraße>

smiling smiley This is american, but there are made adjusted version for various countries. In Norway (translated) it's called "Sesam Station".

Don't know if it's the same music though...

About the "fillers" It Won't Take Long and Infamy: did anyone notice they are based on the same riff? Listen to them in succession, it's the same song sung alternatively by Mick and Keith. The Stones are well known for recycling their riffs, but this must be the first time they do it in the context of one album!
