I saw Leon on June 6, front row in a theater. Whew, that man could play his piano!
And his singing still hit the bluesiest, rockingist, countryish spots. RIP, LR.

Oh ...all our warriors are falling. It'd a generational thing now.
I always thought that the Mad Dogs & Englishmen and/or the Delaney & Bonnie Troupe are about the best rock;'n roll group ever put together. It embodies everything that is right for me.
The last time I saw Leon perform was when Derek Trucks and Susan T put together a modern day Mad Dogs etxravaganza.

RIP to another great!

It seems we are going to be in for this type of ride for several years now, given the ages of many of our, still alive, musical heroes.

I can think of hearing this on the radio for the first time when I was in Junior High.

It floored me. It was unlike anything else on AM radio. It sounded wild, out-of-control, like all-night party that suddenly erupted through the speaker.

Leon's piano anchored that record, and it managed to evoke a country church and a honky tonk in one song.

To my disgust, neither Joe Cocker or Delaney & Bonnie and Friends (where this band sprung from) have made it into the RnR HoF. Leon's induction was more due to lobbying by Elton John, and not even part of the usual selection process.

Pretty amazing when you think about Leon joining George Harrison and Ringo to back Dylan at the Bangla Desh concert. At the time he hit the summit, inserting himself into the Mount Rushmore of rock.

It's surprising he got to do his own set in the Bangladesh concert. He had not had any hits to speak of as a solo artist at that point. I enjoyed his rendition of "Youngblood" in that movie.

He taught me "Lose not a hog for a halfpenny worth of tar".
I hesitated to buy Leon Live when I was a kid because an album in 3 LP disks was expensive for the kid.
Listening the remastered album reissued this year, I wish I had bought it at the susceptible age.

And I remember he came to the small club in Japan as solo player.
He knocked us out with just his keyboards and Mac book.
He was a real Samurai.

Great musician and a great man. He had a record company which was the first one to publish his friend JJ Cale. RIP.

Let's not forget his Stones' connection - he played piano and did the horn arrangement on Live With Me.

And he also played on a session take for Got A Line With You at Olympic in 69 with various Stones.

I wish strength to all those left behind, to live on without Leon.
Let his music be heard for ever. It's giving the world something to enjoy.

(Though I could do without his version of Wild Horses).

God bless Leon and those close to him he leaves behind.

I saw him several times here in Ohio. He played a small club here in Dayton. After his album The Union, with Elton John, it breathed new life and new resources into his career. He was able to buy a new tour bus. He played a larger theater venue here after that and really seemed rejuvenated.

I remember watching the Mad Dogs and Englishmen movie when I was young and realizing how Leon commanded the whole band and arrangements.

He was one of the true musical heroes of my life.

RIP.

Let's not forget the pre-Shine A Light version:

A version of the song, under the title "Get a Line on You", was made by Leon Russell at Olympic Studios in October 1969 with assistance from Jagger (lead vocals), Charlie Watts (drums), Leon Russell (piano), and probably also Bill Wyman (bass) and Mick Taylor (guitar). The recording was made during the recording sessions for the album Leon Russell (released 1970), where both Watts and Wyman contributed drums and bass to some of the tracks. However, the song "Get a Line on You" was not on the released album, but was shelved until 1993, when it finally surfaced as a bonus track on the 24K gold re-release by DCC Compact Classics (DCC Compact Classics GZS 1049).

R.I.P.

Glad Eltony Johnny did an album with him which briefly brought him back from the dead.

What an important part of the music scene he was in the 70's!

Did the Stones give away a song after 1969? I can't remember any.

Great version!

I love his My Cricket & Me, which I have on the Carny album, and by Willie Nelson, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

I'm glad Woody24 mentioned Elton John. I saw the special that was filmed for sessions of "Union" album. Elton really went to bat for Leon. He was determined to do right by this man who had been such an inspiration for him. And one can see the shape Leon was in at the start of the sessions, and the chnage that came over him as they progressed.

Really? I didn't know that Winter's version came out before the Stones' version... Interesting.

Johnny's version was issued as a single in May 1973 in the US (July in the UK) whereas the Stones version came out in August.
