I don't understand how a swampy stripped-down blues can ever be "filler" on a Stones album.

Because it doesn't sound good and its not even better then the original. A bad copy is a filler. No need for it. Just saying its the blues doesn't cut it.
spot on. Every word.

The Two Gospel Keys cut You Gotta Move in 1948 ... and there are earlier versions

True indeed Rockman, but as with the other vids you posted, they tend to lean more towards a gospel sound.
Fred McDowell stripped it down to it's core reworking it with only vocals and some bluesy slide guitar, hence making it 'original' compared with versions in the past.
The Stones copied his version as there isnt really any comparisons with the gospel versions - other than the lyrics.
With that said, those gospel versions you posted are great, and I prefer some of them to the Stones second hand blues version!

I like it...studio version and the live ones.
Never thought of it as a filler.

I love that sequence of photos. I can see Keith finally throwing his slide down, and whirling around and go "WHAT!?"

A great GREAT track. They capture, what ( I imagine) what they s et out to capture. I read where they couldnt get it going in studio until they stripped it down to Charlie's beat, and Bill just hitting a few notes on piano.
And the SF is to me the only real version. and Yayas. The LYL became more of a photo opp.

I never liked it all that much, and it destroys the pace of SF a bit. The album could have been better if they replaced YGTM with something like All Down The Line.

Prodigal Son, You Gotta Move, Shake Your Hips and the soul numbers on IORR and SG are freshening up their respective albums, imo.

I always felt that Back of my Hand sounded like a parody of You Gotta Move (imo).

"I'll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon."

Need some opinions: This is advertised as "Keefs You Gotta Move Outtake" but it's not to be found anywhere else and pretty much all the yt comments denounce it as fake. For starters there's so many layers to it that I wouldn't call it an outtake. Two acoustic slide tracks and a rythm guitar that has that sloppy touch. The voice sounds to me like Talk Is Cheap-period Keith, but then there's several voices making it difficult to distinguish. Keith doesn't usually sing with such rage, but why shouldn't he. Even if it's someone else, it's still an excellent version.

? Your link takes me to the superior Fred McDowell version Nikkei.

I'm assuming this is the link you meant to post? NotKeith

And while we're at it, listen to this atrocity: YouGottaCrap...or maybe better off not.

You're right, I got it mixed up. I also followed that other link in my research and wish I hadn't. But how about it? If it wasn't Keith, it still had to be someone. They absolutely knew what they were doing and honoured the song.

Sam Cooke also recorded "You Gotta Move" but used different lyrics, turning it from a spiritual to a break-up song (to be found on the album "Night Beat" (1963)

You Gotta Move by Sam Cooke

I think this version would have suited the Stones too, if not better than the gospel version. Then again, it was an interesting venture at that time (later continued during the EOMS sessions).

This is the type of cover that makes the Stones so special, so brilliantly mimicked, and introducing millions to a song that we would never have heard had they not covered it!

I've always just thought of it as a joke song. Rather than as a tribute to the "blues legends" who came before them, it's very much in the vein of "Dear Doctor" to my ears. Mick doing his campy "bull negro" vocalizings -- who could ever take that more seriously than "Curly, i'm sorry to hurt you"?

BUT IS IT KEITH OR NOT

Re: Track Talk: You Gotta Move

Great song. The Stones either sincerely tried to copy the blues (early days, B&L), which doesn't appeal to me, or they approached it from a distance at weird angles, which I prefer.
This one is very clean, sparse and mannered. It works.

Love this track but always thought it would have been more suitable for Beggars Banquet.
