You shouldn't see "Live From Texas 1978" then, you would be a lot irritated...

The Vivienne Westwood tee with DESTROY above the swastika. That's okay.

Did not Richards once say something about @#$%& which was not exactly negative, I'm sure someone has heard that, I could not find a reference on the internet. I disagreed but kind of blew it off.

For what it's worth, the swastika predates the Nazis by at least 15,000 years. It had prominence in myriad cultures all over the world -- Hindu, Buddhist and Native American among many others. But I don't know if Keith was thinking about any of that, or just wanted to be a "bad boy."

All true . . . also check out Jorma K at Woodstock, surely no more of a Nazi symp than Keith.

I'd really be interested to read this quote about H!tler if anyone can find it (and if he did, in fact, say it!).

Always a possibility, but if this were the 1978/1979-era Keith, I feel like it'd be more of a PR-stunt/"bad boy" image, like you said. Keep in mind that, while the swastika used to be an image of good luck and fortune, after Germany in the 1930s-early 1940s, that whole viewpoint pretty much became (literal and metaphorical) history. I am reminded, though, of how the 1990s Japanese game/TV series, Pokemon, used to always have a bit of trouble with incorporating images or markings reminiscent of Nazis and Nazi-ism, like an 'SS' here or a right arm fully extended there...

To carve swastikas in wood - wasn't that what young boys, tired of school, did to pass time during long school days?

Would someone please post a picture of the guitar in question, which clearly shows the swastika?

Keith had a leather Nazi officer greatcoat that he wore in 1969. Apparently it got left behind at Altamont.
He wore part of a Nazi uniform on a TV show in 1967, and again at Mick's wedding in '71.
Didn't he own an SS officer's car for a while? And Nellcote had served as some kind of Nazi headquarters.

Here's an article that may put some of the fascination into context - I haven't read it all,
so if it turns fatuous and stupid I apologise. [hipquotient.com]

yeah i know, but since world war II it is the sign of the nazis, period. on the guitar there are also other german war signs, so the context is clear. pretty silly proving to be a bad guy with such stuff.

The Rolling Stones get everyone's goat sooner or later. It's a gift they have.
But guitarbastard, please do have a look at the article I linked to in my earlier post.

Maybe in 'our' part of the world -
but in (f.i.) Asian Hindu countries it is still widely in use today, with only the intention of its original meaning from starters.
And since it was theirs to begin with (to my knowledge), I don't see no reason why they should be deprived from it - just because some stark raving mad lunatic of a dictator briefly made it his symbol of Hate.

Btw: was the nazi swastika not a reversed ('mirrored') Hindi swastika?

Simply to provoke. I grew up in Holland, and we wore German army stuff all the time at school, it was just our way of being punk in the late 80's. Just to provoke teachers and parents.

Meanwhile, the good Mathijs took these photos of the culprit at Exhibitionism.
The instrument is a Newman-Jones job that Keith used in 1973.

"Swastica" is a Sanskrit compositum, made of "su-" and "asti". "-ka" is the nominative affix, If I recall correctly... ;-)

It simply means "(it) be good" or "may it be good". The sign is understood in Buddhism as a symbol for stability. That's why it's shown at right angle, with one 'foot' firmly on the ground.

The Nazis just mirrored it and turned it around for 45° - maybe that's why their 1000 years only lasted a few years. Which is exactly a few years too long, IMHO...
