OT: Boogie rock
Posted by: DiscoVolante ()

This has started to become my favorite genre of rock. Me and my friend play a lot of records at bars in our town and we try to stick to this type of music. I don't know how to explain it better but "Boogie rock", you know what I mean, bands like Status Quo, Foghat, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top etc., beats that goes "du-dudu-dudu" forever. Songs that makes your foot stomp instantly, while drinking beer. I need some recommendations to what albums to look for next.

Key songs:

Status Quo - Roll Over Lay Down

ZZ Top - Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers

Foghat - Fool For The City

Humble Pie - 30 Days In The Hole

Bad Company - Can't Get Enough

A few other good boogie-songs:

Georgia Satellites - Keep Your Hands To Yourself
Status Quo - Again And Again
The Rolling Stones - Respectable
Kiss - Nothing To Lose
Dan Baird - Julie And Lucky
Chuck Berry - Nadine

ZZ Top's Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers has a complex rhythm, not the first one that comes to mind 'that goes "du-dudu-dudu" forever'.

For that band I'd say Tush would be a better choice.

Look for some George Thorogood. Possibly some Johnny Winter. Montrose, as well. Maybe some Grand Funk Railroad? Bachman Turner Overdrive? The Guess Who?

Good luck!

Peace,
Mr DJA

1. Lewis Boogie by Jerry Lee Lewis!
"I Do My Little Boogie Woogie Everyday"

2. John Lee Hooker

3. Canned Heat with all them long ones. Don't forget to BOOGIE!

4. The Rolling Stones: Shake Your Hips.
Great boogie guitar licks at one point during So Young.

And a lot more.... I am just Booging at the spur of the moment.

Edit: Respectable ain't no boogie woogie mister Dandilion P Man. It's a rock and roll song Chuck Berry kind of style.

Boogie is a certain way of playing, just like the guitars in Respectable. Shake Your Hips is classic blues, not boogie.

Examples of the Stones playing boogie:

Star Star
Little Queenie (live)
Respectable
Rip This Joint
Midnight Rambler
Had It With You
It's Only Rock and roll (live)
Short And Curlies

And many more...

For the textbook check out Status Quo (including their Berry covers).

PS: Boogie Woogie is NOT the same as boogie rock..

A someway obscure and a very good live album is the Live At Sunbury by Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs, from 1973.
Check out this video of them playing CC Rider!

Alot of southern rock songs can be classified as boogie...

Sweet Home Alabama - Skynyard
Ramblin Man - Allman Bros
Can't You See - Marshall Tucker
Take the Money and Run - Steve Miller band (okay, not southern)

I Know a Little - Skynyrd, on the last album. Steve Gaines is all over this, with great assist from Gary Rossington. It reminds me a lot of Rip That Joint (without brass).

This is exactly the type of bands I mean. I play most of them, love Grand Funk and BTO. Got to look up Montrose, and listen to more Guess Who, don't know much by them.

You are wrong.
Boogie (Woogie) is a hypnotic one or two chord that goes on forever.

Re: OT: Boogie rock

It sounds a little silly to say " This IS Boogie, and this is not". There is no set parameter for something that makes one boogie, or not. "Boogie on", or "Let's boogie" can have so many different meanings in various settings.
'Boogie' works better as a verb; or as a quasi-noun. Like "that's got some boogie to it..".
DV seems to really know that feel he/she is looking for. Status Quo IMO is the perfect choice. And later-era Grand Funk.
Names that come to mind
Mitch Ryder
NRBQ
Rick Derringer
and Eric Clapton when he had that whole Tulsa band and sound going; with Oldaker and Carl Radle. That was a real understated foot tapper.

Respectable,IORRand Midnight Rambler are Boogie? Lists like this amaze me. If those songs are Boogie then there are 100s of Stones songs that are boogie. Little Queenie? Most of what they did is Boogie then.

Boogie rock, not merely boogie, the rhythm, or boogie-woogie. If you play guitar you'll know that boogie rock is a certain way of playing, like on the songs I mentioned. As mentioned before, check out Status Quo for the simplest way of understanding it.

Agree, however, the question was specifically about the 'beats that goes "du-dudu-dudu" forever', I call that the Status Quo shuffle. Lots of songs mentioned so far are great, but do not meet this criterium.
