Joe Henry did a great job with Solomon Burke, Don Was less so. Jeff Tweedy really did great work with Pops Staples, Mavis Staples, and also Ry Cooder too. Aretha has, dare I say it, always had production issues going as far back as the CBS era, wherein good songs were ruined by poor production. Moving on to the I Never Loved A Man sessions, and Ted White ensured only two tracks were cut down in Alabama, due to drink and perceived racial slurs.
I think even Quincy Jones only cut two tracks with Aretha, one cropping up on the Rare & Unissued cd. However, maybe it takes two to tango and Aretha could possibly be a tad difficult. Unlike Mariah Carey and Beyonce, Aretha probably has earned the right to be difficult, but a little flexibility, and she could still create a great album.
On another note, I've heard HB Barnum's production techniques with David Axelrod (an unsung genius is Axelrod) on Little Willie John, and he's an excellent arranger. I think Barnum was also used with Lou Rawls, so he's got top pedigree.
Apx. 10 years ago, I drove through the Smoky Mtn National park in the rain to see her perform at the Harrah's Casino in Cherokee, NC. My wife and I were so excited to see her as she was on both of our "Bucket Lists".
You can imagine our disappointment (I can't describe it here due to the limitations of printed human language) when we got close enough to the marquee to read: "Arethea Franklin ... Cancelled due to illness ... Tonight's Special Guest ... Tony Orlando."
We did not stay for the show.
If she ever comes to Knoxville, and I can get a decent seat, I'll be there. I won't travel to see her again though.

There are so many incredible rarely heard recordings by Aretha Franklin.I grew up listening to her.In fact she tried her singing Jazz in her early career She actually could touch your soul. THat's why it's called soul music despite the fact she could sing almost anything. A once in a lifetime voice.

Great article.
One of the things that saddens me is that Aretha has never recorded a gritty soul album, since Atlantic, like Bettye Lavette, or Candi Staton. Her musical choices from 1975 onwards have been really poor.

She would benefit from a producer who recognizes her natural talent as Rick Rubin did for Johnny Cash, Jack White did for Loretta Lynn or T-Bone Walker has done for Robert Plant.

My wife and I saw her last year at Nokia Theater and both of us were enthralled by her greatness with the very first notes she sang.
Seriously spine-tingling vibes when she sang all of her classics - doesn't really get any better than that.

Never saw her in concert, but I was in the crowd at Ford Field in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day 2016 when she performed this epic 4 minute and 35 second version of "The Star-Spangled Banner." That was almost an entire concert all by itself!
