OT: RIP George Martin
Posted by: RollingFreak ()

Passed away at 90. One of the greatest producers ever. Always was the "fifth" Beatle in my mind, and the ONLY "fifth" Beatle. Ringo has confirmed on Twitter. So deeply sad.

Very sad...definitely the one and only 5th Beatle. Had the pleasure of seeing him conduct the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra back in 1999 for a night of Beatles music, featuring various guest vocalists. Highlights of the evening included him playing his piano solo for "In My Life" (at normal speed on piano), plus joyously leading the crowd in singing the outro to "Hey Jude" - it was a memorable evening.

That sounds amazing. Truly unique memory.

Very much a GIANT. The Beatles simply wouldn't have been the Beatles without him.

He also did The Goons, Live & Let Die soundtrack, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Jeff Beck's initial forays into jazz-rock.

Lennon and Harrison, when they went solo, ruined themselves by having Phil Spector produce, or over-produce.

God bless you Sir George. Had the good fortune to be invited to his studio in Montserrat in 1980 by a band I was working for called The Tourists. RIP Sir George - a man with an uncanny ear for melody and of course, a hit.

This (Strawberry Fields Forever), I think, was his greatest collaboration with the Fabs.

Very sad, of course--but at least he lived to be 90, unlike some others who have left us recently, and had a very fulfilling life.

Truly a game-changer.

Agreed. I'm sad about his passing but also very happy that he had such a long and -- seemingly great -- life. We are already getting used to seeing our heroes die at 60-70 years of age (which is a respectable age too) when we hoped for them to live for another 20 -- or 100 -- years.

From [en.wikipedia.org] :

"Records produced by Martin have achieved 30 number one singles and 16 number one albums in the UK — plus 23 number one singles and 19 number one albums in North America."

Sad news indeed. Apart from his obvious huge talent George Martin was also a charming man with a great sense of humour as is borne out by the wonderful tributes he is receiving. He will always be remembered for his extraordinary success and achievements with The Beatles but of course he worked with such a varied array of other artists as well. It's fair to say he changed the way popular music was made and sounded. RIP.

So sad to learn of his passing. George was the only producer I would put in the same class as Jimmy Miller, and that is saying a helluva lot. In one word: genius.

RIP George, and thank you for helping to create the music that reverberated across the universe.
