SHEA STADIUM 1989 SET LISTS
Posted by: Pecman ()
Date: March 2, 2016 06:27

Does anyone have the Set Lists from Shea Stadium NYC October 1989?
They put 4 shows on sale initially Oct 25, 26 , 28 & 29th. Then when
the NY Mets didn't make the playoffs, they added October 10th & 11th.
That was kind of messed up because people who bought the 25th thought they
were getting the Stones first show in NYC since MSG Nov 13th 1981 were pissed when they added the Oct 10th & 11th shows.

I was at the Oct 25, 26, & 29th shows...so those are the Set Lists I am looking for.

Thanks.

Rockman...Thanks So Much!

Just like I remembered it.

They put all the dark sounding songs together.

Paint It Black, Sympathy, 2000 Light Years, & Gimmie Shelter together.

25 Songs...that was great.

What I hate about the modern tours is 19 songs and 8-10 minute versions of everything...play the timing of the records and add 6 more songs to the shows.

Simple Enough.

I saw three of the Shea stadium shows and they were incredible. When Jagger appeared at the top of the stage to do Sympathy for The Devil, it was truly a mind blower. Just amazing. And to hear the Stones as a band sounding so tight as compared to '75, '78 and the '81 tours (no doubt influenced by Jagger's solo tour of Japan/Australia) was a real treat. The Stones simply sounded amazing.

I'm always astounded that more people do not rate the last 27 years as the best Live Rolling Stones there has ever been. 75/76/78/81/82 simply can not compete and the main reason for that was Micks awful'singing'.

I saw them at Shea in 89 and had mixed feelings. They were great but it was a shock having seen a band who once improvised so much onstage sticking so close to the studio arrangements for the first time.

Eh, having seen the STEEL WHEELS and VOODOO LOUNGE tours live and all the rest relying on live albums and videos and bootlegs, it's obvious why the eras of 1969-1971, 1972-73, 1978 and 1981-82 are so well respected and liked: They played as an evolving band with swagger, attitude and fantastic musical interest.

That disappeared in 1989-90 when it became about sounding like the albums (that's the sterile part) and money. The swagger and attitude kind of came back in 1994-95. By 1997-99 they had developed an entirely new sound and performance and attitude that was way better than how they sounded for STEEL WHEELS and VOODOO LOUNGE.

They peaked with LICKS.

With 2005-07 they fell off a cliff but that is because of the decline of their skills and what seemed to be a dilapidated cruise control.

<They peaked with LICKS>

By far the worst Stones show I've ever been to smiling smiley

It goes to show that it's hard to generalise when it comes to the Stones..

Huh. Well, FOUR FLICKS is generally pretty damn good. LIVE LICKS, well, there are a few songs but overall it's a complete waste of time.

It could be the one show I saw they happened to be on fire, for them at that time anyway, and the interest in other songs.

I've yet to hear anything from the BANG tour that would make me want to even get a free bootleg. It's just awful.

Well an obvious reason the did less improvising is they expanded the band to like 14 or 15 people...so much they couldn't really do that...especially when you are playing with guys (and gals) who could be over 100 feet away...the art of telepathy was out the window.

I attended at.least 2 of these shows and hung out and partied in the parking lot for a third. Bill was there on bass which was a plus. There was a large amount of sampling and computer crap which kept the shows from varying. The 2013-2014 Stones are raw and a more faconating experience.

Yeah...Ace Frehley of KISS said the same thing...as KISS got huge...the shows got more scripted with the pyro and the tech and the huge stage support...that they wound up doing the same thing night after night...the shows became a boring Broadway Play for the band and the band lost it's edge.

Indeed so.But i would say that they peaked in 1999,and partly in 2002.It went down
from 2003(specially US and australian gigs),but ABB really was boring and you don´t need to hear anything. Its just plain boring to listen.

2012-2013 was kinda OK,better than ABB tour was.But still boring,no groove.

2014-2015-2016 band seems to get better all the time, they got their groove back.

I saw the 11th October 1989 Show, and that was my second Stones show, (my first was in 1982 in Gothenburg in dayligt and I was disapointed) but now I was Blown Away, I still get the goose bumbs when I think of it !
But I can't remember the played Little Red Rooster on that show, the night before Eric Clapton was guest, but I don't think they played Rooster on that night. Or I'm a started to get old and forgett things ??

Yeah. Actually, the Bang show in Oslo was very good (after the poor shows in Finland and Sweden and Keith's incident..). They had to prove something again in Oslo (and in Denmark), seemingly.

What I've heard from the Licks tour is hit and miss – from excellent to extremely sloppy.

Live Licks is their poorest live album, imo. Although I like some of it. The stuff sounded better for some reason on Four Flicks, didn't it?

Ahoy Rotterdam during the Licks Tour is the show I have the best recollection of, of
the couple of shows I've been to in the last 20 years. It's the memory I take with me
for ever.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

I bought LIVE LICKS for disc 2, really: Monkey Man and Keith's two tunes. Brown Sugar on disc 1 is good even though it got heavily edited (which is probably a good thing). Paint It Black is pretty good, better than FLASHPOINT's. Street Fighting Man is decent but they could've used the better performance from MSG than that somewhat botched intro Twickenham performance.

It is funny how FOUR FLICKS sounds considerably better, although I still laugh at the fix they did for Street Fighting Man from the MSG show. Looked at nzentgraf and saw nothing about FOUR FLICKS or LIVE LICKS regarding mixed, editing, overdubs etc. There are overdubs on LIVE LICKS.

Licks Tour Fall 2002 was the best modern day Stones i've seen. The wonderfully varied and surprising setlists, the different types of venues, awesome performances, I loved the shows I saw. Bang tour bored the shit out of me, I enjoyed the 50 & Counting / Zip Code shows I saw more than the Bang shows I saw. To each his own.

I also loved the Licks tour in the fall of 2002, but - I seem to be in the minority here - I really loved the two shows I saw on the Bigger Bang Tour in 2005 and 2006. Both were at Giants stadium in NJ, USA and they were two very different setlists with solid rocking performances. Maybe I have such good memories because I was right up front, which always adds to the excitement!

Yeah, according to both [rocksoff.org] and [www.setlist.fm] they didn't play LRR on October 11th, so you may stop worry about your memory winking smiley

Licks Tour was great but in 2003 towards the end they seemed to go a bit on autopilot. ABB on the other hand seemed to be on autopilot in the beginning but in 2006 and 2007 it became more diverse setlistwise. However, performancewise it went down after Keith's accident.

I guess I was lucky in that the show I saw in 2005 was pre-head thunk. I was a little worried how he would be in 2006 but he actually did very well - at least at the show I saw.
