Next to his parents and kids, Stu must have been the only person in the world not to be star struck when talking to Keith.

Jimmy Cliff and Mick Jagger’s meeting at the Ritz in NYC in June 1981 highlighted the intersection of rock and reggae during a dynamic era in music history. Jimmy Cliff, a reggae legend known for his global hits like “Many Rivers to Cross” and “The Harder They Come,” brought a soulful and rhythmic element to the music scene. His connections with The Rolling Stones further emphasized the band's openness to diverse influences. Notably, Cliff contributed backing vocals to the Stones' 1986 album Dirty Work, specifically on the track “Too Rude,” which infused reggae stylings into their rock sound.

The collaboration between Cliff and the Stones wasn’t limited to studio recordings. In 1982, Ronnie Wood lent his guitar skills to Cliff’s song “Peace Officer” from the Special album, showcasing mutual respect between the artists. This creative exchange reflected the broader cultural appreciation for reggae music in the late 20th century, particularly among British rock bands like The Rolling Stones, who often drew inspiration from the genre. Keith Richards’ 1978 cover of “The Harder They Come” further highlighted the admiration for Cliff’s work, blending reggae rhythms with Richards’ distinctive style.

Still a miracle to me that they looked so fabulous, modern and on top of their game on the 1981 tour, and so out of fashion and old hat on the 1982 tour.

Outfits were, more or less, the same in 1981 and 1982. I don't think fashion changed that much between those years. And I don't think their outfits from 81-82 were ever considered fashionable.
The 1981-82 tour was the last daytime outdoor show and the last bright colored one (outfits and stage). After that everything was painted black...

Well, they looked really cool on the 1981 tour, especially Keith with his black vest and white shirt. Ronnie still looked like his RnR pirate persona, Jagger looked great as well. They looked like the greatest rock and roll band of the day. In 1982 they looked out of fashion, really. Jagger with this colourfull shirts and pants, Richards hair was too long and the ripped shirts and jeans looked quite silly really.

I don't know how to explain really, but in 81 they were RnR, and by 1982 they dressed up like a RnR band. 1982 they became a bit Spinal Tap.

Fair enough! Jagger does look ridiculous at the Roundhay Park show, definitely.

Kinda know what u mean.....

Jagger in particular had some strange gear in 82, whereas in 81 it all hung great together and looked so cool

Possibly as the American Football vibe just worked in the States, but didnt transfer so well over to Europe

For me, they all looked soooooo cool in '81 !!!!!!!!

As awful as they dressed for 1981-82, is/was it worse than the cover of their worst album ever?

Ehhhh, bizarrely, yes.

I actually liked their casual, sporty style, clothing back then. It was another concept, daytime shows, - I think they needed a colorful backdrop, stage and clothes included.
After that tour - 57 shades of black and grey...

I totally agree that 82 was not nearly as good as 81. Actually I think many tours Europe got screwed as they played the US always first and with more energy/drive. 75 was better to me than 76, 81 better than 82, 89 better than 90 and on it goes. Earlier tours not so much.

A very interesting comment, and I agree. For some reason the US tours always seem to be more energetic, vibrant, intents. More RnR! I would like to add though, that the few times they did Australasia after the US tour that turned out to be the finest: Winter Tour 1973, Japan 1990.

Totally agree Mathijs with last part of your post, those shows were definitely great. Boots from 73 Australia are great, outdoor raw but tight shows. Love that gritty sound and you can tell it was hot outside.
