Well, they looked really cool on the 1981 tour, especially Keith with his black vest and white shirt. Ronnie still looked like his RnR pirate persona, Jagger looked great as well. They looked like the greatest rock and roll band of the day. In 1982 they looked out of fashion, really. Jagger with this colourfull shirts and pants, Richards hair was too long and the ripped shirts and jeans looked quite silly really.
I don't know how to explain really, but in 81 they were RnR, and by 1982 they dressed up like a RnR band. 1982 they became a bit Spinal Tap.

I totally agree that 82 was not nearly as good as 81. Actually I think many tours Europe got screwed as they played the US always first and with more energy/drive. 75 was better to me than 76, 81 better than 82, 89 better than 90 and on it goes. Earlier tours not so much.
