Charlie Watts, Long View Farm, 1981

Despite spending days at Long View Farm, the group’s enigmatic drummer Charlie Watts studiously avoided my camera. I photo-
graphed the other band members but Charlie was always absent. Thankfully, he did show up for the group shots when we finally
managed to get the band together in one place. - Brian Aris

Mick Jagger, Long View Farm, 1981

‘To be present on these occasions was a rare and uniquely exhilarating experience. I would go out in front of the stage with my
camera, working with very fast film as there was very little light in the dimly lit building, all the time thinking how privileged I was
to be there with an opportunity to capture the Stones in the raw, as it were’ - Brian Aris

According to Gil Markle (owner of Long View Farm) Bill & Astrid requested living quarters furthest away from Keith's...for peace and quiet.

I remember reading Gil Markle's log. Astrid made many requests. She was a customer who needed a lot of attention. She did not seem unreasonable. We have excerpts from Gil's writing elsewhere in this thread.

From reading Gil's memoirs, and knowing some facts (maybe all from Gil), reading 'between the lines.' it was Gil's fault that the Rolling Stones did not play at the Orpheum Theater in Boston in 1981.

The Rolling Stones didn't sign the deal to stay at Long View Farm until the last minute. Meanwhile, Gil was building a stage for the Rolling Stones (pictured above), and many other amenities.

I guess the Rolling Stones knew they were going to rehearse at Long View Farm, but waited until the last minute to confirm and sign the contract to help keep it quiet they would be staying there.

Gil, by admission in his writings, leaked information that the Stones would be staying at his farm. Gil was told repeatedly to not tell anyone the Rolling Stones could/would be staying at Long View Farm.

If you put the pieces of the puzzle together, Gil leaked the info, the mayor of Boston found out the Stones would be at Long View, the mayor wanted Mick to do something for a charity event, Mick avoided the mayor's request, Boston's local government issued bullshit reasons why the Rolling Stones could not play the Orpheum Theater to warm-up for the 1981 tour.

The Rolling Stones played Sir Morgan's Cove instead.

In the Rolling Stones' defense, they cannot endorse any charity or radio station. If they promote a charity, then every charity will want their help. There are an infinite number of charities in the world. How could they pick one charity over another? Someone may mention they donated a live recording of "Gimme Shelter" to a food cause in 1989. Mick didn't show up and personally endorse the cause.

Mick did attend a photo shoot in San Francisco with Mayor Diane Finestein to save the cable cars. Promoter Bill Grham was a San Francisco promoter at the time. Most likely Mick did the cable car event for Bill Grham.

I thought the cable car promotion was funny when Diane Feinstein was 'putting the bite' on Mick for some money for the cable cars.

A friend recently sent me great concert photos from Munich, 10 June 1982 (first show at Munich, the sunny one). I could ask him if he'll allow to publish them on this board. But I do not know how to load them up so I would be grateful if I could send them to someone who'll load them up.

Wow! It would be appreciated to have those photos posted here. You could email them to me and I'd post them. Of course, you and your friend would be credited.

Hello exilestones, I got the permission to publish the photos on the IORR website and I sent it to you some time ago on WeTransfer but you did not load the down. If you are still willing to publish them here please send me an Email on ebef57@aol.com.

Thank you.

For the guitar nerds: the guitar on the far right is a Gibson RD Artist. Never seen with the Stones before or after.

Stripped of the fancy electronics, the RD was a pretty good guitar.

Just not typical Gibson fayre.

Rolling Stones at Olympiastadion München

Rolling Stones at Olympiastadion München

Do you want to add a short story about the 1982 concert? Maybe write a few lines?

Fortunately I kept a diary, and I translated all the entries concerning the Stones, including the complete entry about the Munich concert,

When did you first become a Rolling Stones fan?

In was aorund 1975 when my friend Jochen gave me a cassette with all the old hits from the 1960s. What impressed me most was the diversity of their songs, and so I began to collect them. By the late 1970's I had almost all songs ever released to that point on cassette in chronological order because we swapped Stones records among friends. I impressed the others with some bootlegs I had bought since 1977, and somehow I even managed to get the very, very rare EP ‚ 'Got Live If You Want It‘ as a new pressing from someone in England. Soon I was considered among friends as a Stones expert (although I have never been a fanatic, I listen to all kinds of other music as well).

Another friend had bought a textbook from Holland so I knew most of the lyrics by heart. The song impossible to get was, 'Through the Lonely Nights ‘ because the single‚ 'It‘s Only Rock’n’Roll’ with this B-side was no longer available. In July and August 1980, I appeared on a nationwide TV quiz show where you had to have a special topic, and mine was the Rolling Stones. At that point, there were only two or three TV stations in Germany so the show was very popular. It was just phenomenal for a country boy to appear there. And I got 5.000 DM which was a fortune back then.

What Rolling Stones music first influenced you to like the Rolling Stones?

I started with Deep Purple at age 16, and I must have listened to the single
'Woman from Tokyo‘ hundreds of times.

Was it your first concert?

No, I had seen the Stones at Stuttgart, Neckrstadion, on June 19, 1976. A translation of my diary entry is on the Internet. I had tried to record this concert on an Uher tape recorder with Sennheiser stereo microphones and managed to get both in but unfortunately, I pulled out the microphones by accident at the start of the concert so I failed. It would probably have been a great recording although during ‚@#$%&‘ many people began yelling because others would not sit down. A friend of mine recorded the concert with a primitive cassette recorder, and it sounds like the bootleg that you can find on YouTube.

What was it like to see the Stones in person (at a concert) for the first time?

Well, it was sensational as a 19-year-old but I was disappointed that they played only newer songs and with one exception no hits from the Decca era.

How did you get tickets?

As you see in my diary a friend bought them for us in a normal ticket office. It was not that hard to get them. In Germany you did not have to queue or wait for hours and hours. But you had to buy the tickets in time, of course.

Who did you go with to the concert?

You see it in the diary but there were some cars full of friends going to Munich.

Is Munich '82 a great memory?

Yes, it was the best concert of the four I attended. It was not as raw as Stuttgart 1976 but not als‚ Vegas-like‘ oder ‚mechanic‘ as Munich 1990 or Stuttgart 2006.

What was a highlight of the Munich '82 show for you? Did any of the Stones say or do anything extra memorable?

Nowadays I think 'Time is on My Side‘ was the highlight for me but we were impressed that they played a lot of songs never heard before live like 'Let it Bleed.' By the way, my friend Michael who is mentioned in the diary was very disappointed that they did not play, 'Midnight Rambler‘ which obviously was his favourite song.

Did you hear any of the 1981 or 1982 shows before seeing them in Germany '82? Were you expecting 'Under My Thumb' and 'Let's Spend the Night Together' to sound as they did? What was your favorite song played live that day?

I don’t think that I had heard anything before or knew about the setlists of previous concerts on the US tour 1981 or the Tour of Europe 1982. 'Let‘s Spend the Night Together’ was another highlight for me, and I knew that they had played it at Knebworth 1976 but it was impossible to get the bootleg although I had good – but expensive – sources.

Diary of Eberhard Fritz, 1982

[all remarks in square brackets are explanations or commentaries not included in the original diary].

Sunday, 10 January 1982

At 11:15 I watched the second part of the documentary „25 years of rock music“. It included great but too short excerpts from concerts, among others from the Stones (Around and around, Satisfaction, Have you seen your mother baby, Jumpin‘ jack flash). They could have made a longer documentary.

Monday, 8 February 1982

[During a bike ride through the village] I got to hang out with Christian, whom I sold three Stones bootlegs for 35 DM. [One of the bootlegs was the great double album ‚Nasty Music‘ with the Brussels and London 1973 recordings in stunning sound quality; unfortunately I had scratched ‚Midnight rambler‘ by accident at a party shortly after I had bought the record in 1977].

Saturday, 1 May 1982 [Holiday]

[During a walk] we were talking mainly about the Stones concert at Munich on June 10. Who’ll come along with us? What are they probably gonna play? We discussed it so heavily that it annoyed some of our friends.

Monday, 3 May 1982

In late afternoon Helmut came and brought along three tickets for the Stones concert which cost 120 DM.

Sunday, 30. Mai (Pentecoste)

[We stayed overnight at a camping site in the Black Forest]. When we had settled down I heard a broadcast on Swiss Radio 24 with rare live recordings from bootlegs by the Stones which the neighbors listened to. I had a beer with them and afterwards went to sleep in the sleeping back but I hardly ever slept because it was very cold. [They actually broadcast the Brussels and London recordings from 1973 but obviously it was kind of a pirate radio station.].

Rolling Stones at Olympiastadion München

Rolling Stones: Under my thumb; When the whip comes down; Let’s spend the night together; Shattered; Neighbors; Black limousine; Just my imagination; Twenty flight rock; Going to a go go; Chantilly lace; Let me go; Time is on my side; Beast of burden; Let it bleed; You can’t always get what you want; Little T & A; Tumbling dice; She’s so cold; Hang fire; Miss you; Honky tonk women; Brown sugar; Start me up; Jumpin’ jack flash; (I can’t get no) satisfaction.

I got up at 7 a.m. and took a bath. At 8:30 Uhr we met in the town center, and all the problems got solved. All those who had gathered were assigned to a car, and as planned I drove in my father’s car together with Ruth, Michael, Rainer und Christian. The trip to Munich went very well, we arrived at 11 a.m. and immediately found a parking lot. Then we had to wait until they opened the gates, and we looked for our seats in section K. It was very near to the stage but laterally to the sound towers so we had a great view but a bad sound. The day was very hot but fortunately, Michael had brought along enough drinks in a cooler bag.

The J. Geils Band started on time at 2:00 p.m. (14:01 to 15:03 h). They were just great, particularly their harp player Magic Dick. Unfortunately, we were not able to see the keyboard players and the drummers of all the groups. After a short pause for rearranging the stage, Peter Maffay was next (15:43 to 16:26 h), but he was a totally wrong cast in this setup. People threw apples, eggs and toilet paper on the stage which he got very furious about. He only played very fast songs and we did not understand the lyrics but he even played an encore. [Perhaps I should add that Maffay was really not bad in his own right but in the context of two American supergroups he simply fell flat.].

Now we had to wait, and the Stones appeared ten minutes late (18:10 to 20:37 h). You see that they are older now. They did not perform such a wild show as back at Stuttgart in 1976, and Mick Jagger did not jump around very much. They did 24 songs, among them some old hits. Jagger played the guitar, for example on songs like 'When the Whip Comes Down ‘ or 'Miss You‘, and he tried very hard to get in touch with the audience. I did not like the second part of the concert that much. Ian Stewart, Bobby Keys (saxophone) [this is certainly an error, it was actually Ernie Watts] und another saxophonist was playing with the Stones. For me, the song I liked best was ‚Tumbling dice‘, accompanied by brass players! When the Stones played the old hits the audience got crazy. Of course, it was most thrilling in the interior space but at the same time, people there were tightly squeezed in. The security crew literally provoked violence because they closed a part of the section K where you had a great view on the stage without an obvious reason, and some guards chased people away. During the encore, Mick Jagger rose on a crane above the audience, a gag which I did not appreciate that much. Like at the beginning of the show lots of air balloons were released at the end but we waited in vain for some fireworks. After an hour we were on the street back home. I was in fear of falling asleep because I was very tired but fortunately, the trip went very well (140 km/h), and at midnight we were at home, completely exhausted. Nevertheless, it was a great, very comfortable day!

Friday, 2. July 1982

When I came home Christian had brought along the die Stones album ‚Still Life‘ and the slides from the concert at Munich. At first listening I did not like the album that much but gradually it grew on me. ‚Let’s spend the night together‘ is a very rocking song.

Sunday, 4 July 1982

I got up as late as 11 a.m., read a little, and listened to the Stones live album. Now, 'Time is on my side‘ is my favourite.
